TNN, Spring 2001

Backstage interview by Pam Tillis:

Pam: One of our girlfriends here at the Opry, Mrs. Loretta Lynn is in the hospital, battling pneumonia. And doctors say she's doing really well, she's responded to treatment and if all goes well, she should be home in a couple of days. You're a friend of Loretta's, aren't you? You did the...

Martina: I am.

Pam: You did the... 75th... The tribute to Loretta Lynn here?

Martina: Yeah, on the 75th anniversary show.

Pam: It was great.

Martina: Thanks. I also got to sing with her a couple of weeks ago. Or maybe it was last week... I lose track of time... On the Live on A&E. She had an hour special so...

Pam: And she was fine then...

Martina: Yeah!

Pam: But she works so hard and she got a little (...) down.

Martina: Yeah...

Pam: So we're just thinking about you, we want you to know that...

Martina: Absolutely.

Pam: And we're thrilled you're here tonight.

Martina: Well I'm glad to be here. Always.

Pam: You know, it's always special when you're here. You wow everybody consistently!

Martina (laughs): Thanks.

Pam: And tell us what you got going on right now?

Martina: Well we... The album we have out right now, it's been out for about a year and a half, it's called Emotion.

Pam: Fourth single?

Martina: We're on a fourth single, "It's My Time."

Pam: I'm hearing it on the radio and it sounds fabulous.

Martina: Thank you.

Pam: Really good.

Martina: Thanks. Yeah, it's exciting.

Pam: And when are you gonna get out on a road again? I know everybody wants to know.

Martina: Well actually I have been home quite a bit. You know, my oldest daughter Delaney started kindergarten.

Pam: Oh gosh.

Martina: I can't believe it, she just turned six. And so she's in kindergarten and so we're, you know, staying home during the school year.

Pam: Mhm. Do the kids say "Mom, when are we gonna get back on the road?"

Martina: No, they don't. (Martina laughs) Actually we've gone out, you know, on a Saturday here and there and.... You know, before she started school they really didn't know any other life.

Pam: Yeah.

Martina: They were just on the road a lot and they do. They know...

Pam: They like home?

Martina: They have little friends and they have, you know, their own beds and so this summer we're gonna have to work hard to make it.

Pam: Yeah.

Martina: Very interesting for them.

Pam: I love your outfit.

Martina: Thanks.

Pam: It's beautiful.

Martina: Thanks.

Pam: Where did you... Now did you have that made for you? Is that costum or...

Martina: No, I found this... I don't know... (she laughs) I don't know where I found this...

Pam: Do you love to shop on the road as much as I do?

Martina: I do.

Pam: It's fun.

Martina: I like to shop on the raod when I get a chance. I like to shop for antiques on the road, too.

Pam: Me too. When are we gonna hook up and do that together?

Martina: We have to.

Pam: Oh I know. Oh I saw Ronnie and (...) Donald today and (...) and Franklin. And it's fun.

Martina: Yeah, it's fun.

Pam: Is your house coming along?

Martina: It's coming along. It's... It's solely but surely. You know, it's one of those things I don't wanna rush.

Pam: Yeah.

Martina: So we kind of walk around, there's some bare... There's a lot of bare walls and a lot of furniture that we need to get. But I just want to wait until I find just the right stuff.

Pam: Yeah.

Martina: You know.

Pam: Well you will.

Martina: I hope so.

Pam: It will be beautiful.

Martina: Thanks.

Pam: Well thank you for being here tonight, I can't wait to hear you sing.

Martina: Thank you.

Pam: Alright, (...) more Opry Backstage yet to come, don't go away!

Intro by Roy Clark:

"Are you folks ready for a lot more than you were promised this evening? Because it's just a few things that are gonna happen that I don't think you are aware of. But one of the nice things that's gonna happen and make al lot of it possible is our next and first guest, a lovely lady. Would you please welcome, Mrs. Martina McBride!"

Martina before she sang "My Baby Loves Me":

"Thank you very much. Well I'm so glad to be here tonight. I wanna... I was thinking about what to do on the Opry tonight and... I'm working on a Greatest Hits album that comes out in September and so I thought it would be kind of fun to go back and do the first hit I had, 'My Baby Loves Me.'"

Martina before she sang with her father:

"Well it's a really special night for me tonight because I am able to bring someone out here on this stage, who I've heard sing since I was a baby and who reallty taught me how to sing. Please welcome my Dad, Darryl Schiff. (the audience applauses) We're gonna do... Hank Thomson had a song called 'Wild Side Of Life'  and Kitty Wells did an answer to that song called 'It Wasn't God Who Make Honky Tonk Angels'. We've kind of put the two together and we're gonna do that for you tonight."
