Loretta Lynn and Friends

January 1995

Loretta: (…) beautiful person inside and out. I love the powers of her song “Independence Day.” Oh I love that song! “My Baby Loves Me” and this is what she’s gonna do now - “Where I Used To Have A Heart.” Make welcome, Martina McBride, friends!

Martina sings “Where I Used To Have A Heart”

Loretta: That was great, Martina!

Martina: Thank you.

Loretta: That was great, honey.

Martina: Thanks.

Loretta: You started singing when you were really young, didn’t you, honey?

Martina: Yeah, I did.

Loretta: Well, sweetheart, you have such a wonderful respect for all the ladies in country music. And I just happened to watch the night that you were doing a lot of songs on the Grand Ole Opry and I just think it was great that… And I’m sure the other ladies that were watching, that were there, they felt the same way I did. And I was watching the night, too, that you were singing with your daddy.

A clip from Martina’s November 1994 appearance at the Grand Ole Opry is shown.

Martina: I've dreamt of being on the Opry since I was a little girl, but there's somebody that's dreamt to be on the Opry even longer than that. Tonight it's his very first night on th Opry - my dad, Daryl Schiff. A lot of you know I grew up singing, in Kansas and my dad had a band when I was growin' up. And was probably my single biggest influence, teaching me all the country classics and giving me a great foundation in country music.

Loretta: Oh that’s great! You must be real proud of your daddy.

Martina: Oh I am, I am.

Loretta: I hope he’s watching tonight.

Martina: I hope so too. Cause, you know, I was talking to him last night on the phone and I told him that I was gonna get to come to sing with you today. The song that (…) got so much (…) attitude.

Loretta: Well, it has to be that way, don’t it?

Martina: That’s right.

The audience laughs. Martina sings “You Ain’t Woman Enough To Take My Man” with Loretta.

Loretta: Thank you.

Martina: Thank YOU.
