Chapters 10 - 12
Episode 10
SCENE ONE - INT. - JENNIFER'S OFFICE - TWO DAYS LATER - MORNING
JENNIFER is on the phone - ONE WAY
JENNIFER: Great honey. Oh I'm so glad we're gonna have you on board. Give your mom a kiss from me. We'll see you soon. Bye.
JACK: A smile? Is that all the mighty king of the Spectator
deserves?
JENNIFER: Mighty king? You're awfully sure of yourself this morning.
JACK: Hehehe (Pulls JENNIFER out of her chair and gives her a kiss) Did
you see me in that meeting this morning? I was authorative, clear, concise --
JENNIFER: Concise, Jack?
JACK: Okay so not concise, but look at these. (Pulls some papers out of
his jacket pocket and hands them to JENNIFER for her perusal)
JENNIFER: These are resignation letters Jack.
JACK: I know! (Grabs her and begins dancing with her) Isn't it wonderful?
JENNIFER: Have you been inhaling the ink again Jack?
JACK laughs but continues dancing with her.
JENNIFER: (struggling to read the letters as he twirls her around) The
lifestyle editor, the metro reporter, two - we have two gossip columnists?
JACK: Nah, more than that.
JENNIFER: (wide-eyed) Two gossip columnists and an opinion editor - Jack!
JACK: His opinions were awful anyway. And the fashion reporter was
thrilled by the meeting and said it would be a pleasure to work under a boss who
dressed so ... smartly.
JENNIFER: Uh! She was flirting with you!
JACK: Flirting? (Stops dancing and pulls JENNIFER close to him) If she
was, I didn't notice.
JENNIFER: (smiles and nervously pushes her hair behind her ear) Well, I
still don't like it --
JACK: It doesn't matter if they dance around in front of me naked, I
wouldn't notice. (BEAT) Okay, I'm a man, I'd notice, but I wouldn't care.
Besides she said you had a nice sense of style too, it's just Vern who needs
some work.
JENNIFER: (smiles as JACK resumes their impromptu dance) Well, I'm glad
we still have a fashion reporter Jack, but we're short several positions now and
it's been less than an hour since your "wonderful" meeting.
JACK: So we'll restructure. We need to anyway since everything is running
amok around here with a dozen or more gossip columnists, ambulance chasers and
the like.
JENNIFER: Great, so more work for Vern and me.
JENNIFER manages to get away from JACK, turns around and walks to her chair.
JACK: No, I'll take some of it. You know I will. (BEAT) What's with the
gloom and doom Jennifer? Who was on the phone?
OUT on JENNIFER
***
SCENE TWO - IN PROGRESS.
JACK moves and stands in front of JENNIFER'S chair, leaning back on the desk.
JACK: Well?
JENNIFER: Right, more lies. It's the lying that I hate and more lies
aren't going to make me feel any better.
JACK: Uh huh.
JENNIFER: Okay. (Grabs a pen and pad of paper) So, first things first. We
need to grab Vern and a list of reporters and editors and go through and figure
out this restructuing plan. We should probably call personnel and get records so
we'll have a better knowledge of their interests.
JACK: Sounds good.
JENNIFER: Then you and I are going to have a late lunch to figure out our
plan for tonight.
JACK: Not so good, but it must be done. And on the bright side, I get to
have lunch with you.
JENNIFER: (Smiles) Okay you go get Vern. I'll call personnel and have
them send up the files. I'll meet you in your office in ten minutes.
JACK: (Bends down and plants a light kiss on her lips) I'll be waiting.
OUT on JACK walking out of JENNIFER'S office
***
SCENE THREE - INT. - JACK'S OFFICE - LATER
VERN: So we do away with the daily gossip section --
JENNIFER: Why don't we send out an email to all the reporters and editors
we still have, explaining the restructuing and asking for the three areas they
would be most interested in working.
VERN: (Smacks the desk) And we plug in the holes from that. Is this gal
not brilliant Jack?
JACK: (proudly) Brilliant, practical and efficient. Three of my favorite
qualities.
JENNIFER: Well, it's only brilliant if people are interested in shifting.
Otherwise, we're back to square one.
JACK: Of course they'll want to shift, opportunities for growth. (JACK
picks up the phone) Vern, make a list of publications in which we would want to
take out ads. (Into the phone) Mary, I need an email sent out to all our
reporters and editors. Come in here and Jennifer will give you all of the
details. (Hangs up)
VERN: You know we should see if any of our layout people are interested
in making the jump. Most of them have journalism degrees.
JACK: (nods) With such brilliance at the helm, how can we fail?
JENNIFER: (laughing) Okay so a separate email to layout (Gathers her
notes) I'll go take care of this with Mary. (Points at JACK) And don't you be
late for lunch.
JACK: (Pointing back at JENNIFER) You either.
JENNIFER smiles at JACK as MARY rushes in.
MARY: Miss Horton?
JENNIFER: (turning) Mary. (JENNIFER walks over and puts her arm around
the other woman's shoulder) How many times do I have to tell you, it's Jennifer.
MARY: Yes Mi- Jennifer. So what --
MARY'S voice fades as she and JENNIFER leave JACK'S office. JACK is still
smiling as he settles into his chair.
VERN: Well, it almost feels like old times around here.
JACK: Almost.
VERN: (Smiles too and walks toward the door) Only you smile a lot more
often now Jack and it's nice to see. (BEAT) I always knew you had it in you.
VERN walks out and shuts the door.
JACK: It feels pretty nice too Vern.
OUT on JACK beginning to work
***
SCENE FOUR - INT. - JENNIFER'S OFFICE - LATER
MARY is finishing the last of JENNIFER'S notes on the emails. JENNIFER stretches her arms skyward.
JENNIFER: You know I've been thinking Mary that I don't really know all that much about you and I think we should correct that.
JENNIFER: I think that those emails can wait a few seconds, but this
really can't. Tell me a little about yourself. You look to be about my age or a
little younger. Do you have any family here in Salem? And how long have you been
working at the Spectator?
MARY: (Places her notepad on the edge of JENNIFER'S desk) I just turned
30 last December. I have a brother who lives here in Salem with his wife and
their two children. My parents live in Georgia.
JENNIFER: Georgia! How nice. (Sits in the seat next to MARY) And what
about the Spectator? Have you worked here long or did Jack hire you?
MARY: Oh no, Mr. Scofield hired me about six years ago.
JENNIFER: (shocked) Six years ago? You've been here -- how did you ever
manage to work for Kate and Victor that long?
MARY: Well, most of the time they weren't around, to be honest. They
weren't hands on like Mr. Deveraux is and for a time they even had some hot shot
here from New York running the place. He's the one who turned it into what you
see today. (BEAT) When I started here this place was still a good newspaper and
people were excited to work here.
JENNIFER: What changed?
MARY: I don't know. I guess it was the format change and then fewer and
fewer people remembered what this newspaper once was. I don't mind telling you
that when I saw Mr. Deveraux stroll in here his first day, my heart leapt with
excitement.
JENNIFER: Excitement?
MARY: Of course. When I first started working here his name was still on
everyone's lips. They would say things like, he wasn't the best boss but he put
out a paper that we could all be proud to work for.
JENNIFER: Yes he did. You know someday I should tell you exactly how he
stumbled into this business. (She smiles) But it doesn't really matter because
it was a natural fit. (BEAT) How did you know it was Jack when you saw him?
MARY: Oh that's easy. Mr. Scofield has a picture of you two with your
daughter in his office. And Vern is always eager to tell stories about you and
Mr. Deveraux.
JENNIFER: (wistful) That was a special time around here.
MARY: (smiles) So I have heard. (BEAT) You know you don't know much about
me but I feel I know a great deal about you thanks to Vern's stories. I hope you
won't think me too forward if I were to tell you something.
JENNIFER: (curious) What would that be?
MARY: Well it's just about you and Mr. Deveraux. I know you only work
together ... but I can tell ... it's just - it's quite obvious that you're still
in love with him and I just hope that the two of you can work things out somehow.
OUT on JENNIFER'S shock
***
SCENE FIVE - INT. - JACK'S OFFICE
JACK is staring at his computer screen, but isn't typing anything.
JACK: Well you're not getting very far, are you Jack? (BEAT) No, no, I'm not. (BEAT) And why do you suppose that is? (BEAT) Oh, I don't know, it might have something to do with my mind focused on Horton night. (BEAT) Gee, do ya think? (Without looking JACK grabs a clean sheet of paper, crumples it and tosses it toward the wastebasket -- it misses) Would you just shutup?
VERN: (amused) Problems Jack?
JACK: Vern! How many times do I have to tell you not to sneak up on me
like that?
VERN: I wasn't sneaking. You bellowed for me about five minutes ago.
JACK: Then what the hell took you so long?
VERN turns to leave
VERN: I'll tell ya what Jack. You calm down a bit and I'll stop in later.
JACK jumps up from his chair and rushes over to VERN, ushering him back in
the door and setting him down to sit on the couch.
JACK: I'm sorry, sorry. Please sit Vern. I need to run something by you.
VERN: Why do I get the feeling this isn't about work?
JACK: Because it isn't? (smiles) This is about Jennifer and --
VERN: (stands) Oh, no Jack. You can count me out!
JACK: (grabs his arm) No, no, no! No wooing or kidnapping is involved
here Vern. This is a confession of sorts and I need to run it past a friendly
face first.
VERN: (settles back down) I know I'm going to regret this, but go ahead.
JACK: Okay (JACK begins to pace around the room) What would you say if I
were to tell you that Jennifer and I are not broken up, but rather that we have
been pretending to be for a rather insane reason for the last six months. That
we're happily together, planning our long and happy future.
VERN: (matter of factly) I'd say, no kidding.
OUT on JACK'S surprise
***
SCENE SIX - JENNIFER'S OFFICE - IN PROGRESS
JENNIFER: (flustered) Me and Jack (laughs) in love? That's a good one Mary.
JENNIFER: (cont.) I'm a bit confused by it all myself, so I can
understand why you would look at me like that. Let's just say it was all a
charade and leave it at that.
MARY: So then you're still married?
JENNIFER: Oh no. We divorced a long time ago. It's a very long story, one
which I will explain to you when we have more time. (BEAT) But Jack and I are
together and we're happy and we're building our future here in Salem.
MARY: Well that's wonderful. I'm very happy for you.
JENNIFER: Yeah?
MARY: Yes.
JENNIFER: Thank you. And Mary, I hope you'll --
MARY: Not a word. There's no need for me to be gossiping around the
newsroom. I promise you that.
JENNIFER: Thank you again.
MARY: (standing) And now I think that the best thing I can do is to go
out there and send out these emails so that I can do my part to help you both
rebuild this newspaper. I'll talk to you later.
JENNIFER smiles as MARY leaves.
JENNIFER: See Jennifer, that wasn't so bad, now was it?
OUT on JENNIFER smiling
***
SCENE SEVEN - INT. - JACK'S OFFICE - IN PROGRESS
JACK: No - no kidding? That's all you have to say?
JACK: I know! In your old age you're having trouble hearing things. It's
probably a little bit my fault - all of those years with me yelling at you. I
apologize for my part in it Vern.
VERN: I heard you fine Jack. You and Jenny-girl are together. I knew
that.
JACK: (flabbergasted) Did -- you spoke with Mrs. Horton, didn't you?
VERN: (rolls his eyes) Since you so kindly pointed out my advanced years,
allow me to remind you that I have been in this business as long as you've been
alive. I can pick up on clues, especially when it comes to you and Jennifer.
There are few who know you both as well as I do.
JACK: So we didn't fool you?
VERN: Not for a second. But it was amusing watching you two fly apart and
start arguing whenever I would come in the room. I appreciated the effort.
(grins)
JACK: (annoyed) Well I am so glad we could keep you entertained Vern.
VERN: (changing the subject) So how is the editorial on rezoning south of
Water Street coming along?
JACK: (He gets up and walks nonchalantly to his desk, sits and looks at
the computer) Swimmingly.
VERN: Oh really? (walks over) Can I get an idea of the length?
VERN tries to look at the screen put JACK covers it with his hands.
JACK: Vern! You know I don't like anyone to see my work before it's
finished.
VERN: Ah, but I'm the editor.
JACK: I'm the boss.
VERN: I need to see it Jack. (Tries again to pull JACK'S hand off the
screen)
JACK: No, no, no. (Loses the battle)
VERN: (Smirks as he looks at the blank screen) Swimmingly, Jack?
JACK: (dejectedly) I was a little distracted.
VERN: (knowingly) So I was your guinea pig with this confession thing.
JACK: Uh ... yes, yes Vern you were.
VERN: Telling your mother the truth?
JACK: (groans) No, I'm not ready for that just yet. We're telling the
Horton clan tonight.
VERN: (chuckles) That explains it all. (He slaps JACK on the back) Now
that I know what you're in for tonight, I'll be a little more lenient on you.
(Laughs again as he walks out)
JACK: (rolls his eyes) Oh thanks Vern.
VERN: (at the door) I still want it on my desk tonight by seven sharp.
JACK crumples up another piece of paper and tosses it at VERN, which makes
VERN laugh even more.
VERN: (closing the door) After you finish up that editorial, you might
want to work on your aim, boss.
OUT on JACK, seemingly annoyed
Episode 11
SCENE ONE - EXT. - HORTON HOUSE - NIGHT
JACK and JENNIFER are rushing up the walkway. When they reach the house JENNIFER rings the doorbell.
JACK: (Loosening his tie) I can't believe we're running late for a family meeting we called.
SHAWN: Are you two ever on time for anything?
JACK: (smirks) Well we try but inevitably Miss Horton has to find a
misplaced pair of shoes or change handbags.
JENNIFER: (indignant) You were rewriting that editorial for the millionth
time Jack.
They walk in the house and SHAWN closes the door. They follow him into the
living room.
JACK: Tempermental
JENNIFER: Perfectionist
SHAWN: Jack and Jen are here, in case you hadn't noticed.
They grin sheepishly at their assembled guests, ALICE, MAGGIE, MICKEY, HOPE,
BO, SHAWN, JULIE and DOUG are all there.
JACK: So sorry to keep you waiting.
JENNIFER: Would you believe the sitter was running late?
OUT on JACK and JENNIFER
***
SCENE TWO - INT. - HORTON HOUSE - IN PROGRESS.
DOUG: The sitter Jen?
JENNIFER: You're probably all wondering why we've called you here.
MICKEY: We'd be lying if we were to say we're not curious.
JULIE: Yes, Horton family meetings aren't an everyday occurance and it's
even more rare to have one initiated by you Jack.
JACK: (chuckling) True. I'm not known for my enjoyment of large family
gatherings. But this is rather important and so we're all here ... together ...
ready to discuss ... this --
BO: You're rambling Jack.
JACK: (smiling) Indeed I am. Jennifer?
JENNIFER: (gnawing nervously on her nail) Uh sure. So we're all gathered
here at Gramma's house --
MAGGIE: Jennifer, we know that.
JACK: (taking JENNIFER by the arm) You know what, if everyone will just
hold that thought, we'll be right back.
JACK and JENNIFER walk out of the room
MICKEY: I haven't seen Jack this speechless since before the wedding.
SHAWN, JULIE, ALICE, BO and MAGGIE all laugh.
HOPE: Well, they're obviously nervous about something.
JULIE: Poor darlings, maybe we should help them out a bit. Does anyone
know what this could be about?
All eyes turn to ALICE
OUT on ALICE smiling
***
SCENE THREE - INT. - KITCHEN
JACK is downing a glass of water.
JENNIFER: This isn't going well.***
SCENE FOUR - IN PROGRESS
HOPE: Gram, you must know.
JACK: Mrs. Horton have you been taking lessons from Jennifer?
JENNIFER: Funny Jack. (Turns to the family) There's no need to badger
Gramma. If you will all take your seats again I think Jack and I are prepared to
tell you everything.
JULIE: (tossing out ideas) You're moving out of the house?
JENNIFER: Uh no.
BO: Selling the Spectator?
JACK: Now why would I go -- (JENNIFER nudges him) Uh no.
MAGGIE: You're getting remarried?
JENNIFER: Umm ... well, we'll get to all of that in a minute.
JACK: Yes, I think it's best if we start at the beginning.
JENNIFER: (pacing around the room) As all of you know Jack and I went to
Africa to get a new start. We thought if we got away from Salem, it would help.
We also wanted to help dad.
JACK: So we decided the only thing we could do to help him would be doing
what we do best - reporting.
HOPE: We know this Jack. Jennifer used to send us all copies, remember?
JENNIFER: Yes. But there was one story we never published. We discovered
that not everyone involved with dad's group was there to help the refugees.
JACK: As a result of this investigation our lives were in danger.
SHAWN: What sort of danger?
JACK: The usual sort - obvious, contemptible, exaggerated.
JENNIFER looks sadly at JACK then continues the story.
JENNIFER: We decided things were too dangerous for Abby.
JACK: So Jennifer went to Ireland with Abigail.
BO: (Figuring it out) And Jack stayed behind to deflect attention. Why
didn't you tell me that Jen? We could have gone and helped Jack.
JENNIFER: I didn't know what to do. We had a plan going in, but it didn't
work the way we planned it.
JACK: She did the best she could. We didn't know who to trust Bo.
JULIE: Surely darlings you must have known you could trust us -- your
family.
JACK: We (Pauses to think) We wanted to, but no, we couldn't.
DOUG: Well how exactly did you end up where you are now?
OUT on JACK and JENNIFER looking at each other
***
SCENE FIVE - HORTON LIVING ROOM - A SHORT TIME LATER
JACK and JENNIFER have finished telling the story
HOPE: Unbelievable. (She gets up and hugs JENNIFER) No wonder you were so out of it when you were here.
ALICE: Now I believe this subject has been brought up a couple of times,
but still no answer.
JENNIFER: What subject is that Gramma?
ALICE: When is the wedding?
OUT on JENNIFER looking to JACK
***
SCENE SIX -- IN PROGRESS
JENNIFER: We ... uh ... Jack.
JENNIFER: What we're saying is, we're going to get married, but we're in
no rush to do it.
JACK: Yes. But as soon as there's a date, you'll all be the first to
know.
JULIE: Well we had better be. There is no way I want to see another rush
wedding for you two.
JENNIFER: It was beautiful.
ALICE: It was darling, but a wedding for 4,000 on a week's notice. (ALICE
gives JENNIFER a look)
SHAWN: 4,000?
JENNIFER: Alright it was a bit much, but everyone was a great help ...
well almost everyone. (JENNIFER looks at JACK)
JACK: Wha -- I couldn't talk! Am I going to have to endure this every
time weddings are mentioned? (To BO) This is why I don't call family meetings.
OUT on BO and JACK laughing
***
SCENE SEVEN - INT. - HORTON HOUSE - A SHORT TIME LATER
JACK is talking with ALICE and JULIE. BO, SHAWN and MAGGIE are also talking. MICKEY and DOUG are in the kitchen getting drinks.
HOPE: I'm so happy for you Jen.
BO: (wrapping his arms around HOPE) Are you ready to go? Shawn has school
in the morning.
HOPE: (kissing him lightly) Of course.
JACK: Uh wait a moment. I actually have a favor to ask you Bo.
BO: A favor?
JACK: (looks at JENNIFER and she nods) Yes, it's nothing major, but well
I was wondering if you might be able to look into someone for me?
HOPE: New story Jack?
JACK: More like the old one.
BO: You're still investigating these doctors?
JENNIFER: Uh ... not exactly. They're still sending threats.
HOPE and BO: What? (Noticing looks from the others they step closer to
JACK and JENNIFER)
HOPE: Are you serious?
JACK: Very. It's convinced us that this may be some sort of personal
vendetta.
BO: Who? Not Larry?
JACK: No. Last we heard he and Carly were still sailing the world in
wedded bliss.
HOPE: So what's the name Jack?
JACK: Dr. Colin Murphy.
BO: (stunned) Colin Murphy?
JENNIFER: Have you met him? He's here in Salem.
BO: Met him? (BEAT) He's my cousin.
JACK and JENNIFER are shocked. They turn and look at each other and then back
to BO.
OUT on BO'S face
Episode 12
SCENE ONE - EXT. - BO & HOPE'S HOUSE - TWO DAYS LATER - MORNING
JACK and JENNIFER are waiting for the door to open. JACK is nervously tapping his foot.
JENNIFER: (Puts a hand on his arm) Would you stop fidgeting Jack? You're making me nervous.
HOPE: Hey you two. (Hugs JENNIFER) Bo will be down in a minute. (Hugs
JACK and leads them both inside) I hope you didn't mind coming over here.
JENNIFER: No it was fine.
JACK: Yes (looks around the room) discretion is of the utmost importance
here. Nothing I hate more than when people discuss private matters in public and
then give you a hard time about hearing every word.
JENNIFER: It's called eavesdropping Jack.
JACK: Yes, I know you're familiar with it.
HOPE and JENNIFER exchange smiles.
BO: (coming down the stairs) At least now we've figured out how you get
into so much trouble Jack.
JENNIFER: (Wraps an arm around JACK'S waist) As if we all didn't already
know it's -
JACK: You.
JENNIFER: (at the same time) Me.
They exchange grins and JENNIFER reaches up to give him a small peck on the
cheek.
JACK: So what can you tell us about Colin?
BO: Have a seat.
JACK and JENNIFER sit next to each other on the couch and HOPE sits next to
JENNIFER. BO sits in the chair facing them.
BO: First, I'll say you two are one up on me. I've never met Colin,
although I've heard plenty about him over the years from Pop.
JACK: He seems a bit young to be a legend.
BO: He's a few years younger than I am. But he was always a bit of a
shining star. Far less reckless than I am and interested in protecting our
family and helping out wherever he can.
JENNIFER: It's just so odd.
HOPE: What is?
JENNIFER: (looks to JACK) We spent months with him, told him about Salem
and our friends and family and he never once mentioned that he was related to
the Brady family.
JACK: Yeah, it is very strange. I distinctly remember Abigail showing him
pictures of her "uncle" Bo. And not to mention he knows of your father
Bo and him being in Salem. Most people would ask just out of curiosity.
BO: Well, it's about to get stranger. To the best of my knowledge my
cousin is not and never has been any kind of doctor.
JACK, JENNIFER, HOPE: What?
OUT on JACK and JENNIFER looking at each other.
***
SCENE TWO - IN PROGRESS
JENNIFER: What did you say?
BO: We'll be in touch.
JACK nods.
HOPE: And we'll see you on Saturday no matter what.
JACK: Saturday?
JENNIFER: (laughing) He has such a selective memory. (Looks at JACK) Our
house warming party Jack.
JACK: Oh no no. (To HOPE) Your sister has invited half of Salem, hasn't
she?
HOPE: (teasing) Think of it this way Jack, it'll be a nice little reunion
for you. It's probably been about ten years since you last saw them all.
JACK: (smirks) Amusing. That Horton humor. I just love it. (Opens the
door) We'll see you Saturday.
JENNIFER: (teasing) With bells on right Jack?
JACK rolls his eyes and they walk out the door. BO and HOPE stand watching in
the doorway as they walk to their car, still teasing each other and laughing.
HOPE: (waves) Bye! (Laughs as she closes the door) They're so happy.
BO: I know. All the more reason we've got to figure out what Colin is up
to Fancy Face.
HOPE: I just hope it doesn't break your father's heart Bo.
BO: Me too. (Pulls her into an embrace) I'm afraid it just might though.
OUT on BO.
***
SCENE THREE - INT. - PARKING GARAGE - LATER
JACK and JENNIFER are in the car. JACK has it still running. JENNIFER is gathering her purse and briefcase.
JENNIFER: Aren't you turning off the car?
JENNIFER: So then what Jack?
JACK: Then we find Colin.
OUT on JACK'S determination
***
SCENE FOUR - INT. - BRADY PUB - A LITTLE LATER
It is past the morning rush so only SHAWN and a couple other patrons are in the restaurant when JACK and JENNIFER walk in. JACK holds the door as JENNIFER walks in laughing at something JACK had said.
SHAWN: (looking up from the table he's sitting at) Well, will you look at that? (Stands to greet them) The Deverauxes -
SHAWN: (laughs good-naturedly) Then how about Jennifer and Jack. (Hugs
JENNIFER) My, my, you two are a sight for these old eyes. (Shakes JACK'S hand)
After the tall tale this young lady told all of us, I never thought I'd see the
two of you in here again all laughing and happy.
JENNIFER: I'm very sorry about that Shawn, but -
SHAWN: Think nothing of it. We've all done our fair share of things to
protect those we love. And while I may not know the details, 'tis good to know
you're all fine now.
JACK: Yes we are and since we're fine, we thought what better time than
now to visit our favorite Irish pub in Salem.
SHAWN: Ah Jack, charmin' as ever I see. Breakfast is on me. What can I
get you both?
JACK and JENNIFER sit at a booth facing each other.
JACK: I'll have coffee to start.
JENNIFER: Tea, please and we hope you'll join us for a bit Shawn.
SHAWN: Well (looks around) You hit me during the slow part of the
morning. I'll get your drinks and we'll catch up a bit. (Walks to the kitchen)
JACK: Excellent work Miss H. Very ... casual. (Picks up the menu)
JENNIFER: (smirks) Thank you. Subtle is my specialty.
JACK looks up from his menu and raises an eyebrow, but says nothing.
JENNIFER: An eyebrow? An eyebrow Jack? Are you saying I'm not subtle?
JACK: (still reading the menu) I didn't say a word Jennifer.
JENNIFER: (whispers) Well I was this time.
SHAWN returns with two mugs of coffee and one with tea and sits down next to
JACK.
SHAWN: Caroline and I have been enjoying the changes in the Spectator
Jack.
JACK: Oh, thank you. (BEAT) It's been a great deal of work even for these
few changes. Titan let it fall apart, but I knew somehow if I just -
JENNIFER: Ahem
JACK: (amused) If I just hired the right people such as the beautiful
woman in front of us, who must have something caught in her throat? (JENNIFER
smiles and shakes her head. JACK chuckles.) Anyway, I knew with the right people
by my side we could rebuild it.
JENNIFER: We still have a long way to go, but it is improving and it's
worth it.
JACK: Yes it is. (BEAT) So what is new with you and Caroline? We've heard
your nephew is here visiting.
SHAWN: (looks strangely at them) Yes he is, but what would make you ask
such a thing Jack? No one is supposed to know he's here.
OUT on JACK and JENNIFER'S discomfort
***
SCENE FIVE - IN PROGRESS
JACK: Haha. What would make me ask such a question ... Jennifer?
SHAWN: Story?
JENNIFER: Yes, first impressions of Middle America and all that.
SHAWN seems amused and lets them continue.
JACK: Middle America, yes. You know there's absolutely nothing Americans
love than to hear that their little town is adored by foreigners and what with
you and Caroline providing your nephew with all the comforts of home he must
just love it here.
JENNIFER: (really getting into it now) Right, I mean this place must be
some little Irish oasis for him.
JACK: Why it's a veritable Mecca for Irish-Americans here in Salem.
SHAWN laughs.
JENNIFER: And not just Irish-Americans but everyone who wants to feel
Irish can come here and they're welcomed.
JACK: (Slams his fist excitedly) I've changed my mind. The focus of the
story should be the pub and the Bradys. Jennifer, we're gonna need data about
the Irish population here in Salem.
JENNIFER pulls out a notebook and begins writing.
JACK: We'll want to interview Shawn and Caroline, build in the excitement
with the idea of someone coming to America and making a name for themselves. A
success story - the people of Salem with love it.
JENNIFER: They'll just eat it up Jack.
JACK: Right and Shawn. (Turns to face him)
SHAWN: (completely baffled, yet amused) Uh, yes Jack?
JACK: We'll still want to interview your nephew and gain a better
understanding of how realistic this place is to a true blue Irish establishment.
SHAWN: But Jennifer, she worked in a pub in Ireland.
JENNIFER: (covering) Yes I did, but it'll be better to hear it from a
true Irishman and um ... it's just not objective if I were to be contributing my
views while writing the story.
JACK: (looks at her with admiration) So where can we find your nephew
Shawn?
COLIN: (V.O.) Right behind you.
JENNIFER and JACK look up startled to see COLIN smiling at them. SHAWN also
grins.

SCENE SIX - IN PROGRESS
SHAWN: (standing) Let me introduce all of you. Jack Deveraux, Jennifer Horton, my nephew Colin Murphy. Colin, meet the best reporting team in town, Deveraux-Horton.
COLIN: I was listening to the two of you pitching your story. Your
professionalism and enthusiasm is impressive and catching.
JACK: Yes, well thank you. (Looks at his watch) Would you look at the
time Jennifer? We have that thing at the place ...
JENNIFER: (trying to figure it out) That thing at the ... oh right the
trial, we have the trial to cover.
JENNIFER stands.
JACK: Right the trial at the courthouse. (Stands) Colin, it was lovely to
see you here. Other than just the story we wanted to be sure that Caroline and
Shawn's invitation to our little soiree on Saturday is extended to you.
COLIN: Thank you Jack. That's very kind of you two. I'd be happy to be
there.
The phone rings.
SHAWN: I've got to get that. We'll see you on Saturday.
JENNIFER: Goodbye Shawn. (Waves)
JACK: (To COLIN) You realize that your little secret won't be safe around
our daughter on Saturday. You might want to tell your family that we're
acquainted.
COLIN: I didn't notice you rushing to admit to an acquaintance Jack.
JACK: Touché, Doctor Murphy.
JACK and COLIN stare at each other for a moment, but say nothing.
SHAWN: Jack, Jennifer. That was Vern and he said they need you back down
at work soon. Some sort of crisis.
JENNIFER: Thanks Shawn. Colin. We'll see you both at the party.
JENNIFER grabs JACK'S arm and they leave the restaurant.
SHAWN: Well my boy it seems you have some explaining to do. Just why
didn't you tell me that you know the Deverauxes?

SCENE EIGHT - INT. - JACK AND JENNIFER'S BEDROOM - LATE EVENING
JACK comes in holding a notebook and rubbing the back of his neck. JENNIFER comes out of the bathroom in her pajamas, drying her hair with a towel. JACK sits on the bed, still concentrating on the papers.
JENNIFER: Hey! Did you get Abby to sleep?
JENNIFER: So what has you so distracted?
JACK: Budget.
JENNIFER: Ugh! Jack! We've looked at it all day.
JENNIFER grabs the notebook and leans in planting kisses all over JACK.
JACK: Miss - Miss Horton ... Jennifer (Kisses her back a bit) Jennifer!
This is about providing for our future generations.
JENNIFER: I am thinking of our future generations Jack.
She begins to unbutton his shirt.
JACK: Jennifer Rose Horton, I'm shocked.
JENNIFER: What can I say? You bring out the animal instinct in me Jack.
JENNIFER tosses the notebook to the ground and then yanks his shirt down off
his shoulders.
JACK: Well (A kiss) down girl. Give me a moment of your time and I'll
give up the budget for tonight. (Another kiss) I promise.
JENNIFER: (backing off) I'm not going to like this am I?
JACK: I promise I'll make it worth your while. (Smiles)
JENNIFER: You're irresistible. (Kisses him again) At least put your shirt
back on so I can concentrate on what you're saying.
JACK: (laughing) You're unbelievable, you know that? (She settles onto
the bed facing him) Mild mannered Jennifer Horton by day ... (pulls his shirt
back up) wanton sex goddess by night.
JENNIFER: (shrugs) It's a skill. (BEAT) So what's up?
JACK: Colin.
JENNIFER: You stopped our fun for him. I may not want to go back to it
once this conversation is over.
JACK: (knowing she's exaggerating, he ignores it) What do you make of him
keeping stuff from the Bradys, especially something as innocent as knowing us.
JENNIFER: Well it's rather suspicious. Of course we'll have some
explaining to do ourselves.
JACK: True. (BEAT) I wonder how long he's going to be staying in Salem.
JENNIFER: Who knows? Until he's finished whatever he's here to do I
guess. I thought you were going to be nicer to him, by the way.
JACK: Well I can't just turn immediately nice or he'd figure it out in a
heartbeat.
JENNIFER: It's this whole doctor thing that's throwing me for a loop
Jack. Why would he be pretending to be a doctor in Africa if he wasn't in on the
scam?
JACK: I don't know Jennifer. But it's as if everything we know about him
is a lie.
JENNIFER: I'm afraid you're right.
JACK:(Upset) I can't believe I fell for his lines Jennifer. I'm - we're
smarter than that and yet I trusted him, trusted him in a way I only trust a few
people. I let him - be in charge of you and --
JENNIFER: (taking his hand) We're safe Jack. Nothing happened to us.
JACK: (looking at her lovingly) Something could have though. (He caresses
her cheek; his voice is thick with emotion) I thank God everyday that nothing
happened to you two Jennifer.
JACK leans in for a kiss. After they break apart, JENNIFER leans back and
smiles at him.
JENNIFER: Better now?
JACK: A little. (smiles) We'll have to pump everyone for more information
on Saturday, but until then I've got bigger concerns.
JENNIFER: Oh no. No budget tonight.
JACK: Well that's certainly important but I meant the pressure of making
this entire conversation worth your while.
JENNIFER: Oh well, (wraps her arms around his neck) I don't think you'll
have any problems Jack.
JACK: Ya think? (Pulls her closer to him and begins to kiss lightly kiss
her neck)
JENNIFER: I know. You never have disappointed before. Now first things
first.
JACK: (stops kissing and looks at her) What's that?
JENNIFER: Getting rid of this shirt.
JACK grins at her as she yanks his shirt down, removes it and then tosses it
to the floor. He looks at her in wonderment and she smiles and pulls him down on
top of her.
OUT on their kissing
