Information on
JJ's Hawaii Expeditions
. . .
***
I host groups of one to six hikers so we
stay close and gain some intimacy with each other.
For people to feel bonded to one another while
hiking, adds a certain "ohana" or family feel
to the day, one that you generally don't experience
on most other sorts of tours. Because of this
feel, I shared in the coveted "Kahili Award" in 1993
provided by the Hawaii Visitors Bureau.
*** I ask that you plan directly through me. Use the
phone number, address, or email at the end of the page.
*** All treks include a thorough discussion of Hawaiian
Natural History, touching on subjects of ethnobotany and
island biology, geology and vulcanism, Hawaiian history and
the culture of the Polynesians, and Human ecology:
our sense of belonging and fitting into this natural world.
*** You may tailor the hikes according to your abilities
and desires. Most of the hikes require you be of generally
good health, and that you possess a medium level of stamina.
If you don't exercise regularly, most of the treks may be
beyond your ability to complete comfortably. Please
acknowledge this and reveal it to me at the time of your
reservation. Yet I have led disabled visitors up to
rainforest waterfalls. And many of my tours have been
non-hikes, where we drive mostly, looking for flowers and
scenery, doing short walks, and engaging in the so-called
"rent-a-local" experience. If that's more your choice,
then let me know. I'll gladly accomodate most requests
to veer from my standard hike format.
*** JJ's Hawaii Expeditions provides bottled water, sandwiches,
fresh fruit and nuts, rain ponchos, small back packs,
insect repellant, first aid, and other varied equipment.
We usually picnic in some of the most breathtaking areas of
Hawaii, but they can be fairly remote. If you need special
medication or foods, please bring that with you. Also I
recommend you bring a towel (if you swim), water socks or
Tevas that you can get dirty and wet (we might walk
through mud or streams), a hat and sunscreen, and extra
clothes in case you might get wet or cold. Some of the
treks require you have close-toed shoes or hiking boots.
Please inquire of what's necessary before you leave home,
so you may properly pack or plan to buy what you need
in a local market here. We can always stop at K-Mart or
Walmart before we leave town and go hiking.
*** Some other things:
Bring a camera, perhaps a disposable waterproof camera
(Good idea buy one!!). Reservations made and paid two weeks
in advance will have a 10% discount applied. No refunds made
if you cancel within a week of the hike, but I will credit
you for another future hike. To hold reservations a 50%
non-refundable deposit is required. For groups of four or less, I
may ask that we travel in your vehicle (rent-a-car) instead
of mine, so as to keep my costs to a minimum. Bathroom stops
may be few. Ask before we set out on our journey, and I'll
give an opportunity to stop at every toilet. Sometimes
though you'll just have to go behind a bush or a rock!
*** Gratuities are gratefully acknowledged and accepted.
Please recognize that tourism is a very capricious industry
and there are many "slow-times" through the year when
there is little or no business. Thank you for your
"word-of-mouth" referrals and graciously remembering me
at the end of your day.
*** If you have additional questions or would like to make
reservations you can contact me at: 808.985.9030.
You may also email or snail mail me at the addresses
below. I recommend booking well in advance
(preferably one month) for the 3, 7, and 10-day outings
as we'll need extra time to plan and prepare.
