Some Magical Uses of Color

When we look around at our surroundings, light waves of different frequencies bounce off various objects, are transmitted through optical receptors of the eye to the portion of the brain where it is translated into the various colors of the visible electromagnetic spectrum (visible light).  Because color is a factor of energy and frequency, it can have measurable effects on the mind, mood and perceptions.  In magic, this means that choosing the correct color for candles or candle holders, fabric, paper, ink, whatever can have a dramatic effect on both the conscious and subconscious mind, helping us to tap into and focus the proper type of energy for a specific task or magical spell.  Below is a listing of some of the more common magical associations for the most commonly used colors in magic:

Red: root (pelvic) chakra, strength, victory, courage, lust, metabolic rate, the Will, power of transformation, birth/rebirth, Life, Fire magic.

Blue: throat chakra, speech/communication, emotions, healing, blessings, preservation, Water magic.

Green: heart chakra, friendship, wealth, fertility, physical manifestations, health, Earth magic.

Yellow: solar plexus (diaphragm) chakra, intellect, charm, confidence, inspiration, success, treasures, true friendships, sun and'/or Air magic.

Orange: belly (gut) chakra, instinct, wisdom, magical knowledge, learning, encouragement.

Purple: the "third eye" chakra, psychic powers, visions, magic dreams, ambition, secular power.

Pink: happiness, anything for red but less intense, platonic love,

White: crown chakra, divinity, the Goddess, protection, benefits, purity, faith, spiritual growth, to send out/reflect energy , moon magic, all-purpose color.

Black: mystery, binding, protection, secrets (revealing or keeping), to draw in/absorb energy, death.
