On Saturday August 11th, 2001, I, along with my mother and her friends Jane and Darlene, got to go see Megan perform a benefit concert at the Evidence Room, and later got to meet her. This is that story. :)
We got to the Evidence Room at around 6:30pm and we found out which door they would be calling us into the theatre with. So naturally we hung around there for the next 30 minutes. It was cool, we could hear Megan and the band rehearsing. There was a short woman with red hair who kept coming out and checking things and we sort of joked around with her.
Anyway, eventually they called us in and we were the first ones in. We got our seats in the perfect place, near the middle in the second row. The theatre was really cozy and closed in, so everyone felt close to the stage. Anyway, we were almost sitting in the middle because there were two seats that were taped for reservations, but the people didn't show up, so we got to move to those seats.
After we were seated, the band came out and we all cheered. Then Megan and Billy Porter (the man who sang the duet with her at the GLAAD Awards) came out and we all cheered and "whoo"ed and whistled. It was fab! Megan had her hair down, was wearing a black pantsuit with her "Over 21" shirt on underneath, and sandles.
She sang her first song (I'm not sure what it was, it wasn't on her CD) and we all cheered, then she introduced herself and the band.
She was amazing, so funny. First she asked who here had been to the Evidence Room before for a play or something and people cheered and she said something like, "Good, I just wanted to make sure no one here thought they were coming to see an episode of 'Will & Grace'." Then she sang another song and we all cheered, then she sang one that she joked was "semi-autographical". It was about someone singing about having all this money and fame and being on top but not being happy. It was so funny, she sang something like "This band is playing just for me!" and we all laughed and she sort of looked confused and said, "What?" Then she smiled to let us know she was only kidding. Then she sang "These fools are paying just for me!" and then she said, "It's not so funny now, is it?" :) She was really hilarious.
She joked before singing sad songs and at one point before singing a really sad song she said, "Okay, I have to explain this one or there'll be walkouts". :) And it was so nice, whenever Billy Porter sang a solo, Megan went offstage so that all the Megan fans wouldn't be watching her while he sang. I thought that was really classy. Billy did two songs, and after he sang the second one, this wonderful song dedicated to the students at Columbine, Megan said that asking Billy to sing backup was like asking some famous violin player (she said a name, I just can't remember whose) to play background at your hoedown.
There were a few parts where there were mistakes, but Megan pulled them off so well. Like during one song, she messed up the lyrics, then she stopped and said, "Okay, wait, stop, we're going back to the second verse" and she smiled and started dancing. :) And at one point she was singing and her viola player dropped his bow and she sort of opened her eyes and looked at us like she knew we had seen that. It was great!!! She did one encore, she came out and said, "What d'ya know, we happen to have one more song to play". Then she said she hated encores because they were so fake. :)
She also sang a country song that she said was the most self-pitrying country song out there and that you could look, but you wouldn't find one to top it. She did all these neat actions when she sang it, too, it was really great. She sang "Ruby's Arms", "Marie", and one other song that I can't remember from her CD, but it was mostly new stuff (new to hear her sing, not new as in new songs). I just loved how funny and nice she was during the music pauses. She also had to read music for one song and she joked that since she can't read music, it took her four years to learn that one song. :)
The show ended and we all got up to go. Darlene and I left first, and waited in the main room for my mom and Jane to come out. But after a bit, we realized they weren't there. Then just as I was about to go check, Jane came running out, all excited and insisted I come back. I went back in and saw my mom talking to the red haired woman at the door where Megan and the band had exited. Then the woman told us to follow her and we did and it was then that I knew I was going to meet Megan. We went to a porch outside where everyone was relaxing and Megan was there and she greeted us and then my mom told me to tell her what was going on.
Now, needless to say, I was speechless. It wasn't that I couldn't talk, I just couldn't think of a thing to say. So I just sort of laughed and looked at Megan the entire time. I think the most I told her was how to spell my name and that my website about Jack & Karen was fairly popular. She said she'd check it out, even though she admits to not being online. :)
Megan asked me how old I was and I told her and she said it was funny because the other night there was a girl from Ohio there that was my age who acted the same way, all speechless and giggling. Anyway, I got two pictures taken of me and Megan, which are shown below, and a personal autograph. When we posed for the pictures, she said she could feel my trembling flesh. She was SOOOOOO nice, the nicest person ever!!! She told me that she was disappointed with the photo she autographed (the one from Glamour of her in the Ford bandana) because she had done a bunch with her little dog that didn't make it. My mom told her that we have two little poodles too.
It was so weird, even when she said my name, I was freaking out. I was thinking, "Megan Mullally knows my NAME!!!" And she knows I'm from Canada and that we came down just to see her. Here's what her autograph said:
