Basic Malay Words one needs to know at Indian/Malay Coffeeshop or stalls before ordering your drinks
Tarik means Pulled - You can order your Tea/Coffee Tarik with some bubbles on the top of your glass/cup the local version of expensive Starbucks/Coffee beans at about S$0.80/S$0.90 per glass/cup at many coffeeshops in Singapore. It is like 1/7 the price of what you would have paid at the international well known chain of Starbucks/Coffee beans http://www.yuffy.com/tehtarik.html
Ahlia means gingered - Tea/Coffee Ahlia means your drinks come with a gingered aroma (some sort of squeezed ginger juice in your drinks at about S$0.10 more)
There is also a HDB Void Deck Xiang Coffeeshop at Block 110 Lengkong Tiga (on the MRT Side walk along Lorong Mydin to the end then up a staircase you will find the coffeeshop [famous for its Sweet and Sour Pork S$6/- onwards www.makantime.com]) There are two provision shops (I econ Lin Da Mini Chinese Supermarket Tel : 6748 9257/ 6841 8681 and RS Indian Minimart) selling many necessary stuff as well and a small Wet Sharmila market (which opens in the morning) Map showing where the exact location is here. Click Block 110 for the map.
Food Stalls, Coffee Shops and others Many Coffee Shops along Changi Road and Jalan Masjid and Lor Mydin including two Indian Muslim coffeeshops known as al salam and Irfan's at the junction of Jalan Masjid and Changi Road that are open 24 hours.
Among one of the many Favourites of Mr Koh is the White Hokkien Mee by Hock Choo Pte Ltd a coffeeshop at the Junction of Changi Road/Lor Mydin (Directly opposite Hotel 81). For S$3/- (Small) S$4/- (Large) you will get a plate of watery noodles known by Singaporeans as HOKKIEN MEE. Give a try you will not regret.
Irfan 24 hours Coffeeshop At the Junction of Changi Road/Jalan Masjid (directly opposite the Kassim Mosque (Masjid Kassim). Mr Koh's favourite is the Ayam Penyet (Pressed Chicken) at S$4/- by Mimi Chicken Rice stall run by a Malay Guy who does the chilli stuff very well. It is a dish of Fried Chicken with not so hot chilli, tomato, some vegetable and some slices of beancurd and of course White Rice. You can ask for additional soup and additional chilli as well. In addition you can also ask him to fry the chicken again which in Malay "gariiiiing".
Old Chang Kee Curry Pau (Traditional Curry Pau) is a small shop Newly Open along Sims Ave East behind Kembangan Bus Stop (in front of the Kembangan Metro "MRT") Each Curry Pau costs about S$1.10/S$1.20. Very popular among many Singaporeans. Taste it and you will yearn for more.
Seng Kee Herbal Black Chicken has two shops along Changi Road (as you walk along Jalan Masjid heading to Changi Road at the Junction you turn left) and you will see row of tables and chairs where the chef churn out a lot of great food for a pricey value. The middle of the two shops is a motorcycle shop.
A little bit further up that lane you will see Cabana Seafood Restaurant another good eating place but not as crowded as Seng Kee Herbal Black Chicken Shops. A cosy atmosphere for some drinks and some food with some friends.

The nature of the people who come for food within Joo Chiat Next to cultural heritage, food is Joo Chiat’s claim to fame as Singaporeans indulge in one of their favourite pastimes: Eating! Joo Chiat’s multi-racial Communitywww.myjoochiat.com/food-intro.htm
As you come to the crossroads of Joo Chiat and East Coast roads, turn right. If you're still feeling greedy for more food, the Tau Kwa Pah www.makansutra.com/jalan/walking_joo_chiat.html
Foods www.makansutra.com/jalan/walking_joo_chiat.html EAT, EAT, EAT, EAT, EAT.....AND EAT SOME MORE. Singapore has the best food in Asia!! Furthermore; The food is reasonable (Most things in Singapore are not) so, enjoy!! If you arrive late in Singapore, try "Lau Pa Sat Festival Market" for late night grub. Usually when I arrive in Sing, it's 1:00 am...therefore I head out to Lau Pa Sat for Noodles and Seafood at 2:00 in the Morning. I hope you love Singapore like I do. There's no other place like it in the world from an American in San Francisco, California. I've been to Sentosa and it's a cheesy place to go to. See for yourself on their website: www.sentosa.com.sg/home.htm I quite like parts of the east coast where there still are bits of Singapore left that haven't been demolished or re-Disneyfied by the Singapore government. Really good is this do-it-yourself tour through the 'Joo Chiat' neighbourhood combined with eating tips: www.makansutra.com/jalan/walking_joo_chiat.html
