Sundance Celebrates 10th Anniversary of Piper-Heidsieck Tribute December 7, 2000-- Julianne Moore will receive the 10th Anniversary Piper-Heidsieck Tribute to Independent Vision at the Sundance Film Festival next month in Park City, Utah. The Tribute was created to honor a film artist who has made a significant and unique contribution to independent film. The award will be presented on Saturday, January 20 at a special ceremony featuring retrospective clips and a live, onstage interview with Ms. Moore. Special guests include Lyle Lovett and Wallace Shawn. "Julianne Moore has the kind of charismatic talent that magnetically draws one to a film simply because she appears in it. The array of characters she has portrayed demonstrates a range and capability that places her on par with the screen idols of the classic Hollywood era. And yet although she has already received a great deal of public acclaim she is an actress whose career choices reflect a lifelong commitment to creative growth and artistic achievement," said Geoffrey Gilmore, Codirector of the SundanceFilm Festival and Director of Film Programming. Julianne Moore, an actor of exceptional range, has won a worldwide audience with performances in such diverse films as BOOGIE NIGHTS, THE MYTH OF FINGERPRINTS, SURVIVING PICASSO, COOKIE'S FORTUNE, AN IDEAL HUSBAND, VANYA ON 42nd STREET, and MAGNOLIA. Moore's role as 'Sarah Miles' in THE END OF THE AFFAIR garnered her with a Golden Globe Award nomination, a Screen Actor's Guild Award nomination, as well as an Academy Award nomination. She was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for both Robert Altmans' SHORT CUTS and Todd Hayne's SAFE. Upcoming for Moore in 2001 is HANNIBAL, Ridley Scott's highly anticipated sequel to SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, Bart Freundlich's WORLD TRAVELER, and the Dreamwork's project EVOLUTION. She starred in a number of off- Broadway productions, including Caryl Churchill's Serious Money and Ice Cream/Hot Fudge at the Public Theatre. She appeared in Guthrie Theatre's Hamlet. This year, the Sundance Film Festival and Champagne Piper-Heidsieck celebrate the tenth anniversary of their collaboration in presenting the Tribute to Independent Vision. Previous recipients of the award are John Turturro (1992), Denzel Washington (1993), Gena Rowlands (1994), Nicolas Cage (1995), Dianne Wiest (1996), Tim Robbins (1997), Frances MacDormand (1998), Laura Dern (1999), and Kevin Spacey(2000). "The Sundance Film Festival has been fortunate to have a group of friends and supporters who recognize the unique role played by film artists in the world of independent film. Through its International Program, the Institute conducts Screenwriters Laboratories, Producers Conferences, and independent film screenings in ten countries, with an emphasis on Latin America. The Institute also maintains the Sundance Collection at UCLA, an archive dedicated to the collection and preservation of independent film. The Sundance Theatre Program encourages and supports the development of new work for American theatre through its Theatre Laboratory and by exploring and re-examining the American musical theatre repertory. It is also actively involved with commissioning and producing new plays for young audiences. The newest endeavors of the Institute include the Writers Fellowship Program, which identifies and supports young writers whose talent and passion are focused on writing about the arts for a wider public, and the Documentary Film Program, which nurtures the growth of nonfiction filmmakers, encourages the exploration of innovative nonfiction storytelling, and promotes documentary exhibition to a broader public.
