Conquering the Giant Majority

Once, our students council was deliberating on who will be our three representatives to a national convention of student leaders.

Since it was for free and the place of convention was in Bagiuo, a popular tourist destination in the country, everybody was interested to go.

It so happened also that out of more than twenty members there are only three of us who belong in the minority: Leda, Irwin and me. This being the case, we still desired that one of us in the minority would be one of the lucky three.

Since I will be the representative of another organization, the three of us decided that Leda will be our nominee since she had the better chance than Irwin. She had supporters in the other sides.

“But we are still outnumbered.” I told them.

                “That’s true.” Leda agreed.

“We must have a strategy to get Leda in the three slots.” Irwin added.

It was clear for us that, we have slim chance to achieve our goal if we won’t do something.

Our hope was dampened further, when the group decided to automatically grant the two slots to the President of the Executive officers and the Chairman of the Representative Assembly.

When the nomination was opened for the only remaining slot, Irwin nominated Leda. The majority also nominated their best bet.

Leda, in her warm and engaging manner, nominated another person whom she believed also deserved to be the representative.

“Anyway, I don’t have a chance with their number of votes.” She confided to us as a defense for her action.

Her words struck me like a ten-wheeler truck! It was an epiphany. I hastily made another motion and, voila, the majority block was in chaos. When the voting came, Leda won! Though it was with a very slim margin, it was a resounding success for us.

My motion? I simply nominated another member of the majority block! And they succumb to the bait. Other majority members, who secretly nurtured a desire to go, nominated themselves or had someone do it. And the rest was history.
