AUDITION

Almost every professionals ballet dancers have gone through auditions. (There's always some that's left out but that's really rare.) Most of them had gone through hundreds before they are accepted into a company or school that they desired. Even people that are not yet professionals are sometimes asked to audition for some summer intensive, schools...etc. Auditions are usually in a class format. Some might ask for a variation or a short solo, make sure to pay attention to this if the auditions requires is. It is usually hard to do any serious preparation to it except for getting a very good training.

For the people that had no experience in ballet, the auditioners are usually looking for musicality, flexibility, right attitude and proper body. For the dancers that are more experienced, the auditioners would look more and more toward the technique and style. Every auditioner has their own way of recognizing talent and sometimes they can make mistakes, too, so NEVER get discouraged if you did not get a role that you wanted or anything that the audition may leads into.

If you really want to get into a program. Make sure you look up the time a few months before you think the audition is suppose to take place. Some schools (performances) starts their autdition sign ups (reservations) way before the actual term or rehearsals start. If possible, try to ask someone who has done the audition the years before. It will help you know what to expect and what the auditioner is looking for beforehand.

Here are some tips of audions that someone posted on danceart.com (I do not deserve credit but I do agree to all of this):
~audition for more than one program
~Get a good night's sleep the night before, and don't audition on an empty stomach.
~Arrive on time. Allow far more time than you think you will need to get to the audition site.
~Bring the audition fee in cash, exact change.
~Bring what the audition requires, neither more nor less. This may include photos, a resume, or letters of recommendation. If you are not sure, call the auditioning school, NOT the host site.
~If possible, take a barre class before the audition. At the very least, be thoroughly stretched.
~Make sure your hair is secure and no jewelry or nail polish.
~Unless the audition requires a specific color leotard and tights, wear a leotard in which you are comfortable (NOT a brand-new one) and pink tights.
~Bring your pointe shoes, even if you've just started en pointe. Shoes should be broken in enough to be comfortable, but not raggedy.
~Remove sweatshirts, leg warmers, etc., before being asked to do so.
~Follow the teacher's instructions exactly. Don't try to impress by doing three pirouettes when they ask you to do two. Remember, they are also looking to see how well you take directions.
~Smile. Be bright and eager. Make an effort to look and feel your best, and it will show.
~Be polite to auditioners and other candidates.
~Enjoy the experience of taking a class from a talented and unfamiliar teacher. Make it your goal to learn something new in the audition class.
