TERMS OF POINTE YOU SHOULD KNOW

Here are a few terms in pointe that you might want to be familiar with. (These are taken from The Parents Book of Ballet by Angela Whitehill and William Noble.)



~Box-The stiffened part of the shoes that encases the toes.

~Pointe-The art of rising onto the tip of the toe.

~Vamp-The part of the box, from the top of the toes to the underside where pleating meets sole.

~Shank-The inner sole.

~Pleating-The satin drawn over the front of the toe and folded under the toe where it is joined to the sole.

~Darning-Embroidering the tip of the toe and the pleats with silk thread.

~Ribbons-One half-inch-wide satin pieces attached to th eshoe with a "grosgrain"or rougher texture on the reverse side.
