To My Home Page Devoted to the
MEMORY
of the MEN who were
the
28th Thomas'Louisiana Infantry
Regiment!
These pages are devoted to the memory of
men of the 28th Thomas' Regiment Louisiana Infantry. This
Louisiana regiment served with valor at the Battle of
Chickasaw Bluffs and at the Siege of Vicksburg during the
American Civil War. This web site will be devoted to the MEN
of that gallant regiment.
Paul (Augustine) Hebert a lowly Private,
with Co. A., of the 28th Thomas' Regiment served with this
Louisiana unit. He was this researcher's late
Great-grandfather. It is to his memory as well as to the men
who served alongside him that the efforts of this research
project are dedicated. Lest we forget, these men served,
suffered, fought and in some cases died for what they
believed in.

28th Thomas' Louisiana Infantry
Regiment
Updating as of 5 April 2003.
Recently, we located a source that has
enabled us to add the alternative
names of the men of the Thomas'
28th Louisiana Infantry Regiment. There were a number of
different spellings of many of the names which has led to a
lot of confusion in determining if a particular soldier
might or might not have been someones ancestor.
In adding these alternate names to our
roster, the confusion might now be somewhat less. Check them
out.
As of the 5th of April, all of the names
in Co. A through Co.
K have been updated. We are
continuing to add other companies as soon as we can
transcribe the changes from our database to the web
pages.
An example is my ancestor: Paul Augustine
Hebert, of Co. A. He is also listed as Heburt,
Paul, and Huburt, Paul.
Additionally, this process had yielded
ADDITIONAL names to our roster. We have always suspected
that many other soldiers had served in this unit -- but
records could not be found. By using the list of names in
the Archives microfilms designated as M378, Roll 1 through
31., we have been able to build what we believe is about as
complete a roster of men who served in this historic
Confederate regiment from Louisiana as possible.
As time progresses, we are sure that
other names will come to light and we will of course update
our records when this happens.
Thank You.

28th
Thomas': Image of Erich Nystrom, Pvt., Co.
F. (Added on 5 June 2002)
Newly received image of one of the men who
served with the Thomas' 28th Louisiana Infantry Regiment.
The image contains a wealth of information with regards to
the uniform worn and accouterments of the average private.
Interesting note that the emblem on his hat reflects what
appears to be crossed canon! A number of the men of this
regiment were assigned to work with batteries at Vicksburg
as well as crew on the C.S.S. Arkansas.
The image was passed on to us through the
generosity of a fellow researcher, Stephen G. Terrell, who
indicated that a slip of paper attached to the back of the
tin type image (also in image) identifies the soldier as
Erich Nystrom. Additional research is being done to see if
this is indeed the man pictured in the above image.
We, at the Thomas' 28th Louisiana
Infantry regiment are grateful for the excellent
contribution to our web site by Mr. Terrell.

(Added on 6 Nov
2001)
The newest page added to this historical
website offers some recently acquired additions to the
history of this Louisiana Civil War regiment. They are in
the form of historical documents: some are copies of actual
documents (as above, the document appointing Allen Thomas to
Brigadier General) and some, which were too fragile to copy
are illustrated as transcriptions. Check out the newest page
now.

Recently, we were offered the wonderful
opportunity of submitting a short story to a southwest
Louisiana journal -- the Attakapas
Gazette. As a result of the
story, which will run in the upcoming January 2001 issue, we
were able to obtain, with the kind permission of Dr. Russell
Pavich, MD, of Eunice, Louisiana, a copy of the above
portrait which hangs in his home in Eunice.
A local professional photographer, Mr.
Jesse Breaux (who also happens to be a living realtive of
Sosthene Sevigne Breaux, Pvt., Co. D. [Hayes Champions],
18th Louisiana Infantry Regiment) was able to take make an
excellent image of the photograph of Paul Hebert pictured
above.
Our most gracious THANK YOU is extended to Dr. Russell
Pavich and Mr. Jesse Breaux of Eunice -- without whose
assistance, this image could not have been provided. The
image also is a first -- the FIRST photograph of common
private, of the 28th Thomas' Louisiana Infantry Regiment --
to be pictured in a Confederate uniform!

It is the intention of this researcher to
add additional information about the MEN of the 28th

of this gallant regiment.
The long range plan is to post STORIES,
PHOTOS, NOTES, LETTERS, etc. provided by descendants (SUCH
AS YOURSELF) as additional pages to this project. The first
of these stories is included and is about one of the men of
the regiment, a brief story of this researcher's late
Great-grandfather, Pvt. Paul (Augustin) Hebert of St. Landry
Parish who served honorably with Company A of the 28th
Thomas' Regiment. He service lasted throughout the entirity
of the American Civil War.
Now you can visit my other web site which
is devoted to the regiment, in which another of this
researcher's relatives served ...the 18th Regiment Louisiana

Keep the Memory
Alive!
Your kindness can help preserve our
heritage!
The Jackson
Barracks Military Library in New
Orleans is the location where the Louisiana copies of the
Civil War Muster Roll records are kept. There is an ongoing
plan to protect and preserve those fragile documents, along
with many other important documents on file at the military
library. Our favorite "charity" is the Book Binding Fund at
Jackson Barracks.
This web site is a FREE web site, and we do not solicit
donations of any kind.
However, we do support the efforts of others to preserve the
RICH HERITAGE we have been given by our ancestors -- who
served with pride. Should you care, in a special way, to
keep the memory alive of your ancestor, we would suggest
making a donation to the Jackson
Barracks Military Library Book Binding Fund that is overseen by Archivist, Ms. Sherrie S.
Pugh. A donation given in the name of YOUR Louisiana Civil
War ancestor can help preserve another volume of the Muster
Rolls! We did! Should you care to contact Ms. Pugh, you may
do so at the following address:
