GADEN'S

Gaden's was formed in 1871 by George H. Gaden, who set up an aerated water plant on Prescott Street. Gaden's became bottlers of Coca-Cola in 1938 and closed in 1977.

Photo1 Soda bottles with Baltimore loop seal type closures. Both bottles depict a sea-lion on an ice-pan with a codfish in its mouth and are embossed “G. H. GADEN / SAINT JOHN'S / KEEP KOOL.” The base is embossed “BREFFITS / MAKERS / LONDON.” Aqua in colour, 23 cm and 18.5 cm in height. Early- to mid- 1890s.

Photo 2 Crown top bottles depicting a sea-lion on an ice-pan with a codfish in its mouth and embossed “G. H. GADEN / SAINT JOHN'S / KEEP KOOL.” The base of the larger bottle is not embossed whereas the base of the smaller bottle is embossed “C. S. & CO”, “K. B. LD T” or “W. S. & CO. H.” There are at least seven different variants of the smaller bottle which were both machine made and BIMAL. Aqua in colour, 23.5 cm and 16.3 cm-19 cm in height. Bottles with “C. S. & CO.” on their base date to the early 1900s-1920 and bottles with “K. B. LD T” and “W. S. & CO. H” on their base date to approximately 1895-1913.

Photo 3 Crown top bottle depicting a sea-lion on an ice-pan with a codfish in its mouth and embossed “G. H. GADEN / SAINT JOHN'S / KEEP KOOL / GINGER BEER.” The base is embossed “K / B / LD / T” or “W. S. & Co H.” Light green and emerald green in colour, 21.8 cm in height. Approximately 1910-1920.

Photo 4 Stone ginger beer bottle marked “GADEN'S AERATED WATER WORKS / SAINT JOHN'S, N.F. / J. R. BENNETT/ PROPRIETOR / STONE GINGER BEER.” Impressed near the base is the maker's trademark “RILEY.” Beige and tan in colour, 20 cm in height. Early 1910s-early 1920s.
