John's father is Sidney Candy who died in 1955 of heart attack at age 35 when John was five years old.
John's mother is Evangeline Candy. Now she lives with John's aunt Fran in the house once owned by John's grandparents in Toronto ,Ontario, Canada.
John's brother Jim, who is older by two years, now lives across the street from John's mother.
John played offensive tackle on the school's football team when he was at high school but his career on the field ended because of a knee injury.
John wanted to join the U.S. Marines by his final year of high school but he was rejected because of his old football injury.
John enrolled in the journalism program at Centennial College in Scarborough after he finished high school but in his second year at Centennial John dropped out of school and he had committed himself to becoming an actor.
John performed in his first professional play, Creeps in 1971.
John joined Second City in Toronto in 1973 but he performed at Second City in Chicago.
John married Rosemary Margaret Hobor in April 1979 at St.Basil's Roman Catholic Church in midtown Toronto.
John's daughter Jennifer Candy was born in 1980.
John's son Christopher Candy was born in 1984.
In 1984, John spent a month in the Pritikin Longevity Center in Santa Monica in order to lose some of his weight and did end up losing 75 pounds.
In the summer of 1985, John got the most unexpected honour of his life when he was chosen one of Playgirl magazine's ten sexiest men. The editors explained : "The shaggy moptop, dimpled cheeks, physical grace - nobody is sexier than this giant of comedy who turns us on with good humor."
John moved his family to California in 1986 after he bought a house in Brentwood.
John had his own radio show called Radio Kandy, which was aired weekly for two hours in 1989.
John also had his own TV cartoon show called Camp Candy with John as a comical head counselor which teach the viewers about the wonders of ecology. And one of the episodes Wish Upon a Fish won a Humanitas award.
In 1992, John accepted an invitation to be the host of the Academy of Canadian Cinema's Genie Awards but then John backed out of the show after the CBC promoted his appearance with jokes about his size.
While John was shooting Wagons East, John flew to Los Angeles and consulted doctors, who recommended him to have a hip-replacement operation because his hips were such in bad shape that often a double had to be used. But John would have to lose some weight before he could have the surgery.
