As a young lad Albert left rural life at Bakers Farm in Shipley, to go into the drapery trade. In 1851 he was working as an apprentice at a shop in South Street, Worthing. Ten years later, at 26 years of age, he was one of the 27 staff of Mr Henry Viney, at what must have been a very large department store for its time, occupying a corner position in New Street, in the commercial heart of the city of Birmingham.
In 1864 his marriage to Lydia Lousia Haines was registered in Kings Norton Warwickshire; but a little over a year later her early death was registered in Aston district. By 1871 he had his own drapery shop at 11 Market Square, Stafford. One of his staff was a milliner, Anne Merryman, from Upton upon Severn district, who became his second wife, in 1875. They had two children, Lilian May born in 1879 and Albert Frederick, born about 1881. In 1881 they were living at 38 Gaolgate Street with their two young children. By 1901 they had relocated to No 31 where Albert had become the proprietor of a public house called 'The Oak'. Their last move was to Belgrave, where Albert and Anne resided in Melton Road. Albert died in 1912; Anne in 1914. Nothing further is known about Lilian May, but her brother Albert Frederick married Eveline Mary Watson in 1904. A daughter named Lilian Florence was born later the same year. Eveline died in 1950. Albert Frederick Joyes passed away at 85, on 19th February 1966, at Laundry Lane, Leicester. He was described as a retired engineer maintenance mechanic. The informant was M Barrs, said to be his niece; but the exact connection is not known at this time. His daughter Lilian Florence Joyes, then aged 61, also died in early 1966. Her death was registered at Market Bosworth |
