FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT NICHOLLS STATE POWERLIFTING, AND COLLEGIATE LIFTING IN GENERAL. 1. Can I get a scholarship to lift in college? No, you cannot. Powerlifting is not an NCAA or NAIA sport, so all Collegiate lifters are truly dedicated to the sport. Some state high school Powerlifting organisations (like the LHSPLA, THSPLA, THSWPLA) provide an award based one time scholarship to a few lifters each year. This is usually enough for your books, or dorm fees. Ask your high school coach for information. Nicholls State does offer an Out of State Tuition Fee exemption if the student meets several criteria. Call me or email me for more info. 2. What are the benefits of lifting on a team? You will be alone under the bar. No doubt about that. But you don't have to be alone on meet day, or in training. Ask the top lifters in the world and you will find very few who train by themselves. Spotting, loading, straps, shirts, wraps, tracking numbers. That makes for a tough meet day if you try to do it all by yourself. Equally dificult is trying to train in most commercial gyms. Many don't allow chalk (???), and few will have anyone who can give you any kind of usefull feedback. Lifting with a team gives you comraderie, leadership, and motivation. 3. What does team membership get you at Nicholls State? Your annual team fee goes to finance the everyday running of the team. We will outfit you, travel you, put you up in hotels, and get the entries paid for. You will be responsible for your own food! Note that the team fee alone cannot possibly do all of this. We must all take part in fund raising activities throughout the school year. 4. How is lifting in college different from high school? The high school season typically runs from December through March, with lifters sometimes lifting in as many as four of five meets per year. In college, we aim for three. At Nicholls, we are part of the Louisiana Intercollegiate Powerlifting Association, which provides for four meets each year: Rookie meet in October or November University Cup in December (hosted by Nicholls) Collegiate Nationals in March Late year meet in April All of these are USAPL sanctioned contests. More or less meets are attended on a per need basis, or in summer, when training will not interfere with Collegiate Nationals In addition to the schedule differences, the training can be manipulated to adjust for individual differences. We follow a basic template, and make additions or substitutions as needed for each lifter. 5. Where is Nicholls State???? We are located in Thibodaux, Louisiana, 45 minutes southwest of New Orleans. Nicholls is known as the "Harvard on the Bayou" because of its famous English department, and location along historic Bayou Lafourche. We are deep in the heart of Cajun Country, with easy access to New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Houston, Dallas, and other major cities. Back to NICHOLLS POWERLIFTING PAGE |
