There are many types of maps available to the public or the adventurer. Maps have a scale e.g. 1:250,000 i.e.. 1 cm is equivalent to 250,000 cm or 2.5 km. it is important that you choose a map with the scale you need. A very large scale that shows all the details will not be very useful if you are only crossing that part of the country but will come in handy if you are trekking and want to find a place where to camp.
Having a map is not very useful either if you cannot interpret the symbols shown in the map. Any professional map will have an explanation of the symbols at the side or at one of the corners. This section will mention some of the more common symbols and the interpretation of the contour lines
