Mystery unfolding in WWF BY BLACKJACK BROWN -- Chicago Sun Times Sunday, June 6, 1999 Who is it? That's the question everyone's asking after the debut of a mystery man or woman on "Raw'' last week. The Higher Power, as the person is called by the Undertaker, looked right into Steve Austin's face, and the former champ got a good look at the person behind the Taker's recent run of evil. Although Austin is the only one who knows who was under the hood, many are speculating. The leading candidate is Shawn Michaels to reappear as the leader of the corporate ministry and look to avenge his title loss at Wrestlemania 14 to Austin. Another name that continues to come up is that of Linda McMahon, the wife of Vince. Linda holds equal control of the company and could have taken the side of her son Shane over that of her husband. Other names that have surfaced but are less likely include the Ultimate Warrior, Shane McMahon, Shane Douglas, Mike Tyson and Sid. The names of former WWFers Ted DiBiase, Jake Roberts, Hulk Hogan and Brother Love have all come up in the past few days, and all those men have former ties to the Undertaker. RATINGS: The holiday weekend took a little bite out of the ratings, but it was still a big win for the WWF. "Raw" posted hours of 5.8 and 6.7 for a 6.3 total, while "Nitro" did hours of 3.7, 3.1 and 3.0 for a 3.3. "Nitro" is getting close to the high 2s, which would be a disaster for WCW and TNT. "Raw" bucked a recent trend of dropping in the second hour by getting a big boost. "Heat" was hit hardest by the Memorial Day weekend with a 3.1. |
