Pro Wrestling Notebook:
McMahon leaving? A RAW
deal
By M.L. Curly / The Detroit News
WWF champion Stone Cold Steve Austin thinks he can rid
himself of his No. 1 nemesis, Vince McMahon, if Austin beats
The Undertaker in their First Blood match at Fully Loaded on July
25 in Buffalo.
McMahon, the real-life owner of the WWF, vowed Monday
on RAW that if Austin beats The Undertaker, he will never again
be seen on WWF television and will never interfere in any of
Austin's matches. But if Austin loses, he never again will receive
another title shot.
The only problem with stipulations like this is that they are
never enforced. For example, on Oct. 18, 1998, at WWF
Judgment Day in Chicago, McMahon fired Austin when he
refused do his job as referee in the Undertaker vs. Kane match.
The next night on RAW, Austin took McMahon "hostage," and
on Oct. 26, McMahon's son Shane re-hired Austin, even though
Shane turned out to be "in cahoots" with his father Vince the
whole time.
Stipulations attached to pay-per-view matches in the WWF
last only through that particular match, and then they are nullified
as soon as the following night on live RAW.
Also on RAW, The Rock earned No. 1 contender status when
he beat Hunter Hearst Helmsley in a steel cage match, when
Chyna's interference of knocking out the referee backfired. Chyna
also accused X-Pac and Road Dog of spray-painting her car,
although it was clear that she and Helmsley were framing X-Pac
and Road Dog as both sides claim the right to the D-X royalties.
RAW beat Nitro for the 34th straight week in the television
ratings, 5.95 to 3.26.
