SCL 2002
The Department of Liberal Arts, The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinidad & Tobago, hosted the 14th Biennial Conference of the Society for Caribbean Linguistics in the thirtieth anniversary of the Society.

The theme of the Conference was "Caribbean Linguistics: Theory and Application" and within this broad theme there were papers that considered theoretical and practical language and linguistics issues. In addition to the purely theoretical dimensions, sub-areas which were addressed included language acquisition and learning, issues of class, ethnic and gender sensitisation, and materials production.

In addition to the Conference papers, the programme included pre-conference workshops and colloquia.  The latter were specially designed to cater to individuals and groups interested in language, culture and education in the Caribbean context.  The colloquia considered issues of language education for both natives of the Caribbean as well as those from Latin America, recognising English as a Foreign Language as a burgeoning field in the region.

Cultural events highlighting the diverse culture of Trinidad and Tobago were scheduled for conference participants.
