Let Us Realize the Desire of Gwangju Without Fail

- On the occasion of the 28^th anniversary of the heroic Gwangju Popular Uprising -

The Gwangju Popular Uprising which broke out in May 1980 in south Korea was the most heroic people's uprising unprecedented in the modern oriental history where the whole people in the city, men and women, old and young, rose up in the death-defying resistance against the US colonial military fascist rule in south Korea.

It was also a bloody resistance which demonstrated the strong spirit of independence, elated mettle and indomitable spirit of the Korean nation and a heroic landmark that registered a shining chapter in history of the anti-US and anti-fascist movement of the south Korean people.

With the indignation and rancor at the US colonial domination and the military fascist rule, a million Gwangju citizens assaulted the police stations, arsenals and explosive warehouses, and formed a militia.

And through heavy and desperate battles they drove the martial law forces out of the city and occupied organs of the fascist rule such as the municipal and provincial offices.

Even under the worst situation where they were besieged from every direction and the supply of water and foodstuff was totally suspended, the uprisers chanted slogans “Yankee, go home!” and “Abolish the military fascist dictatorship!”, and held out the city in their hands for 10 days beating back the desperate offensives of the fascist group equipped with planes, tanks and armored vehicles.

Frightened by the heroic struggle of the Gwangju uprisers, the US gave an urgent order to its commander in south Korea of massacre in Gwangju.

The US military commander in south Korea committed 5 airborne commando brigades, 3 cavalry divisions, an armored unit and an air force unit under his command to suppress the uprising and handed over the commanding right to the Jon Du-hwan military fascist clique.

Under the US order of massacre the Jon Du-hwan fascist hangmen indiscriminately shot, stabbed, burnt the people to death, trampled them down with tanks, scraped out the breasts of girls and women and even pulled out and killed a fetus from a pregnant woman.

The massacre of the Gwangju uprisers was an unheard-of butchering against humankind.

Even today, 28 years thereafter, the south Korean people are still writhing in soaring curse and grudge and unslaked anger toward the US imperialists and the fascist killers who reduced Gwangju, a city of uprising, into a blood bathroom.

The US which quelled the Gwangju uprising with arms has kept its colonial rule and reigned over south Korea until now and is viciously challenging the reunification cause of the Korean nation.

Even today when the fever of the Korean nation for independent reunification is skyrocketing thanks to the publication of the June 15 joint declaration and the October 4 Declaration the US is hindering the process of reconciliation and reunification of the Korea nation in every way and inviting a nuclear war danger into the Korean Peninsula by getting more pronounced of its criminal nature.

The reality clearly proves that the US is a wicked aggressor and a sworn enemy of the Korean nation, who pursues its own interests at the expenses of the latter’s sacrifice, and unless an end is put to the US policy of military occupation of south Korea it is unthinkable about peace of the Korean Peninsula, security of the nation and the country’s reunification.

 Currying favor with the US, sworn enemy of the nation, traitor Lee Myung Bak gentries which recently took power in south Korea, are turning back on the nation and frenzied in anti-north Korea confrontation swimming against the trend of the times.

The AINDF and the south Korean people will further intensify the struggle against the US and the Lee Myung Bak regime in order to give vent to the bloody rancor of the Gwangju uprisers.

We avail ourselves of this opportunity to express our expectation that the anti-imperialist solidarity organizations throughout the world would render firm support and solidarity to the struggle of the AINDF and the south Korean people aimed at expelling the US imperialist aggressors from south Korea, restoring the usurped national dignity and sovereignty and realizing the historic cause of the national reunification.
