1967 - THE
INTRODUCTION OF BARNABAS AND JULIA
The characters of Barnabas and Julia are introduced
to the audience in this storyline. Julia realizes that Barnabas is a
vampire, a creature she has been searching for for a long time in order to
attempt a cure. Barnabas is very suspicious of her at first but agrees to
let her treat him for his condition. He continues to treat her coldly, and
it is clear that he is unsure what to make of this professional woman. As
they spend more time together, Julia begins to see his vulnerabilities
particularly when it comes to his little sister, Sarah. Before long, it is
obvious that Julia has fallen in love with Barnabas, and he gives various
hints that show that he knows that this is the case. At the conclusion of
this storyline, the two characters have become enemies due to Barnabas'
refusal to trust Julia to keep his secret.

everything I needed to know." |

room to kill her. As he bends over the bed, she tells him from the other

EPISODE
306 - Barnabas tells Julia that she is "a
meddlesome and domineering woman. If the modern man is willing
to tolerate your kind of woman, that's his problem, but I will
have none of it."
EPISODE 318 - Barnabas tells Julia that he is
going to kill David although she begs him not to. He tells her
that nothing on earth can stop him. Suddenly, Barnabas is aware
of Sarah's presence and begs her to let him see her.
"Nothing on this earth can stop you, except one little
girl," Julia observes.
EPISODE 324 - Dr. Woodard speculates to Julia
that the reason she is staying at Collinwood is because she is
romantically involved with Barnabas. "I didn't say that he
was the reason I was staying," Julia says with a smile.
"You don't have to, Julia" Woodard replies with a
chuckle. |

EPISODE 338 - 339 - Barnabas and Julia
discuss how much Woodard knows. Barnabas comments, causing Julia
to blush, "You said earlier that Dr. Woodard was the most
brilliant student in your class at medical school. You were
being generous. Actually, I think he was the second most
brilliant student." Later, Julia tells Woodard she is
"emotionally involved" with Barnabas. When Julia tells
Barnabas that Woodard had guessed that she and Barnabas had a
romantic relationship, Barnabas laughs, considering this to be
absurd. Julia tries to pretend that his derision at this
possibility does not hurt her. |

EPISODE 341 - Barnabas forces Julia to help
him with his plan to kill Woodard. When Woodard tries to trick
him into believing that Sarah is there, Barnabas stabs him with
the needle in rage. "Loathsome I am and evil, you can mock
me for that, but leave my pain alone."
EPISODE 343 - Julia tries to dissuade
Barnabas from continuing with the treatments, but he wants to
continue. She tells him that once he is human that he will no
longer want Josette. She says that someone might even be willing
to love him as he is, and it is obvious that she is talking
about herself. He ignores her hint and insists on continuing
with the experiment. She says, "I remind you of what I
said. Humans, too, are seldom able to love without
hurting." |

|
EPISODE 345 - 346 - Barnabas is anxious for
Vicki to become his new Josette. Julia asks, "Did Josette
ever come to you willingly?" He tells her that she acts as
if Josette is her rival. Later, after Julia has tried to
convince Vicki not to bother Barnabas, Barnabas tells Julia not
to let her jealousy interfere with his plans. He tells her that
they have a professional relationship. Julia insists that their
involvement is more complicated than that of just doctor and
patient. |

|
EPISODE 350 - Barnabas has aged to an old man
because of his insistence that the treatments be accelerated. He
does not want to bite Vicki because he wants her to come to him
willingly. Julia offers her own blood to Barnabas saying,
"Don't you think it's possible someone might come to you
willingly?" When he questions this, she continues,
"Yes, there might be someone who could accept you for what
you are and submit to your needs." But Barnabas reluctantly
turns down Julia's offer, telling her that he might still need
her medical help. Julia is disappointed and hurt.

drive Julia crazy by tormenting her with the "ghost"
of Dr. Woodard. Julia tells Carolyn to tell Barnabas that she
has had enough. "I know his weaknesses as well as he knows
mine. There is a very thin line between love and hate. I know
how thin it is." Julia finally goes to the Old House to see
Barnabas. He pretends that he has not been trying to scare her
and feigns a romantic interest in her. He calls her by her first
name, touches her and says, "I care for you, Julia. I need
you." It is obvious that Julia wants to believe what he is
saying to her. He kisses her hand and bids her goodnight. After
she leaves, Carolyn who has been listening, chastises Barnabas.
"She really loves you. You shouldn't have done that." |
