1968-1969 - THE DREAM CURSE, THE CREATION OF ADAM, AND QUENTIN'S GHOST

Barnabas and Julia's relationship goes through a dramatic change during this storyline. They are wary of each other as this time period begins, but as the Adam experiment unfolds, we see their trust in each other grow. We also know that Barnabas is aware that Julia is in love with him because he says as much to Dr. Lang. And despite his friendship for her, Barnabas continues to manipulate her feelings for him to his own advantage as well as always putting his own interests first. Julia's love for Barnabas is very evident in this storyline as she helps and protects him, even unselfishly keeping her promise to keep him from rising again as a vampire. She also hints at her feelings both to Barnabas and others, including Stokes and Cassandra, and it is obvious that other people recognize her feelings as well. But it is not until she is missing at the hands of another vampire that Barnabas is forced to admit to himself and to Willie that Julia means a great deal to him. They go into the 1897 storyline as very close friends with complete trust in each other.

JuliaEPISODE 462: Julia meets Barnabas on the terrace after tending to Vicki who has returned from the past. Barnabas compliments her new short haircut, but Julia is suspicious of his motives. She refuses to tell him what Vicki has said and agrees that she doesn't trust him. "Can't we go back to the time when we were friends, when we worked together?" Barnabas asks, but Julia answers that she doesn't' know. He wonders whether she will help him or hurt him. "That depends entirely on you, Barnabas," she says smugly.

They meet again later, and Barnabas finds it hard to believe that Vicki could be in love with someone who is dead (Peter). When Julia snidely mentions that Barnabas loves Josette, he says, "It is not like you to mention her name." Julia tells him that she will make Vicki forget whatever she remembers about him. "I will do that for you, Barnabas. You have my promise."

Barnabas & JuliaEPISODE 468: Carolyn and Julia discuss Barnabas. "... he made the people close to him unhappy... just as he did you," Carolyn says. They notice that the marks on Carolyn's neck are gone. "It means he's as free as you are... if it lasts. And it must. It must!" Julia says.

EPISODE 474: Cassandra asks Roger if Julia "is in love with Barnabas?"

EPISODE 480: Barnabas tells Dr. Lang that Julia should be involved in the Adam experiment saying, "She - cares for me. Unfortunate, but she does." Lang says he already knows this, and Barnabas says this makes Julia trustworthy. Julia comes to help with Jeff, and Barnabas insists to Lang that Julia will believe Barnabas before she believes Jeff's story. Julia finds out about the experiment but decides she can't "let his madness go on - not even for Barnabas."

B&JEPISODE 481: Barnabas stops Julia from calling the police by reminding her about Dr. Woodard. "You always win, don't you Barnabas?" she says. Barnabas tells her that he will have her keep his money once he is in Adam's body.

EPISODES 485-486: Julia is afraid that Barnabas will be in pain during the experiment. Barnabas thanks Julia for being there during the experiment. When it gets out of control, Julia goes to Barnabas' side and cries out his name.

After Cassandra kills Lang, Julia wants to stop the experiment but is won over once again by Barnabas' pleas, "You wouldn't let me go back to the dark?"

Julia & VickiEPISODES 487-488: Julia has had the dream and goes to Professor Stokes for help. "You're obviously trying to save someone- you must care a great deal about the person you're trying to save," Stokes guesses. "Yes... I will admit that I do. But I don't know if I can save him. I don't know!" Julia says.

Julia is very agitated since having the dream and finds it difficult to concentrate on the experiment. Barnabas learns of her dream but instead of seeming very concerned insists that she must continue with her work Later, Barnabas studies the body and is happy that Adam's face is handsome. "Because of Vicki," Julia says with disdain. "To some women that wouldn't make a difference..." she says turning away from him as she hints strongly at her own feelings for him. Barnabas puts his hand on her shoulder and says tenderly, "Julia, I've never taken the trouble to say this to you before, but I appreciate everything you've done for me." Julia is embarrassed by the situation and moves away from him, changing the subject.

Julia staking BarnabasEPISODE 490: Julia is again upset about her dream, but Barnabas continues to insist that she must continue because this is his only chance. As the experiment begins, Julia hesitates and tells Barnabas, " This may be the last time I'll ever see you as you are now." He snaps that that is the point of what they are doing.

Later on, Barnabas despairs that he will never be free of Angelique and that he should just accept that he will have the dream and revert to vampirism. Julia urges him to leave town so that Vicki cannot tell him the dream. "I'd be willing to go with you, to protect you." Barnabas refuses, saying that Cassandra would find them.

Julia & WillieEPISODES 535-536: Julia tells Vicki that she must leave town because Barnabas is determined that she tell him the dream. Barnabas arrives at Collinwood and despite Julia's physical efforts to keep him away from Vicki, insists that Vicki tell him the dream. Afterward, he orders Julia to comfort Vicki although Julia tells him that she wants to stay with him. Julia goes in to Vicki who says, "You were very close to him, weren't you?" "Yes, very close, " Julia answers wistfully. Julia goes to the Old House to be with Barnabas when he has the dream. He makes her promise over her agonized protestations that she will destroy him once he reverts. She keeps an anxious watch over him as he falls asleep.

After the dream, Julia finds Barnabas bitten by the bat and is upset when she realizes that he is dead. She tries to fulfill her promise to him by staking him but finds herself unable to take such a final step. Willie is relieved and puts his hand comfortingly on her shoulder. "You understand, Willie." But she is determined to keep Barnabas from rising as a vampire and tells Willie that they will bury him in the woods. Julia and Willie stand by the grave in despair. "I so wish I'd never met him," Julia says. "No, that's not true either. Even when we were against each other, I know he only did what he was driven to do." She is reluctant to leave his grave, and Willie suggests that they can pray for him. Julia kneels by his grave and throws in a handful of dirt. Willie then tells her that she would feel better if she cried. "I'm past crying, Willie. If I could imagine life without him, I could cry. But I can't. I can't..."

EPISODES 537-538: Julia confronts Cassandra at Collinwood telling her that she has finally won. Cassandra says, "I think that you are in love with him." "Not nearly as much as you are," Julia counters with a snarl. She then tells Cassandra that Barnabas is dead. "If it weren't for you, there would be a man in the Old House who could finally savor the life you denied him all these years! Who could finally perhaps find the love you were determined he would never see." Julia assures her that she will do everything she can to expose and stop Cassandra.

Later, as Julia examines a seemingly dead Adam, he begins to gasp for air. Julia realizes what this means and says in a voice choked with pain, "Barnabas - I buried him alive!"

Stokes helps Julia dig up Barnabas' grave, but Julia refuses to answer the professor's questions. "I wish I knew the secret of Barnabas Collins, " Stokes muses. "He inspires so many emotions in so many people."

Barnabas & JuliaEPISODE 547: Julia wants a reluctant Barnabas to kill the aging Cassandra while he can. "I won't let you lose this moment. I won't. If you won't do something about Cassandra, I will! Adam confronts Barnabas and Julia at the Old House about the delay in the experiment. He threatens to kill the family if they don't fulfill their promise to create a mate for him. After he leaves, Barnabas sinks dejectedly into a chair, and Julia comes to him and places her hand tenderly on his shoulder.

Julia and BarnabasEPISODE 568: Barnabas stays with Julia as she tries to resist Tom Jennings' call. He promises to help her resist the vampire and tells her he will not leave her. She again protests that Tom will come to her and then Barnabas will be in danger. As night falls, she becomes very agitated, and Barnabas tries to calm her. "You're going to stay with me." "With you," she answers. "Yes, yes, I want to be with you..." Jennings appears and is driven off, but when Barnabas turns his back, Julia disappears.

EPISODE 570: This is a pivotal episode in the Barnabas- Julia relationship, and one in which many fans believe Barnabas realizes for the first time that his feelings for Julia go beyond friendship. Julia has disappeared and Barnabas has been frantically searching for her, knowing that she has been with the vampire Tom Jennings. He and Willie discuss how important it is to find Jennings, and Barnabas talks about Adam's threats. Willie laughs at him, "Oh, Barnabas, you're talking about all the people except the one that concerns you the most. The experiment, Vicki, Adam, the family - I know you care about all those people. But the one you don't mention much is Julia- and she's the one you need the most." Barnabas agrees because without her, they cannot do the experiment. "You just don't get what I'm saying," Willie says. "You're acting like some man whose secretary is missing and I know that's how you don't feel. You're more than just worried about Julia." "What do you want me to admit, Willie," Barnabas finally says as he paces the room. "That I care for Julia more than I appear to? All right, I will admit it. She's been a part of my life for so long, a very important part. I must find her."

Barnabas finds Julia unconscious in the mausoleum and cries her name. He returns to the Old House and carries her in his arms over the threshold (!) and puts her down in a chair in the drawing room. He calls her name and begs, "Stay with me, Julia..." He is desperate to keep her alive and promises to help her. He insists on going to Tom's coffin to stake him although it is not yet dawn.

Julia and BarnabasEPISODE 571: Barnabas prepares to stake Jennings. "I must, if Julia is to live..." He knows that the body must be buried but wants to check on Julia right away. He returns to the Old House and rushes to Julia. He sits by her bed and takes her hand telling her that Tom Jennings will never bother her again. "Thank you, Barnabas." "You've saved my life so often that I don't deserve thanks," he says in a gentle voice.

EPISODE 582: When Willie protests that he doesn't want Maggie to be the life force in the experiment, he tells Julia that she doesn't know what it will be like for him to watch someone he cares about go through that kind of thing. Julia quietly tells him that she already knows what it will be like and reminds him that she watched Barnabas go through it.

EPISODE 584: Barnabas refuses to accept Julia's offer that she be the life force for Eve.

Julia BarnabasEPISODE 593: Barnabas decides to tell the family about the failed experiment and what has happened to Carolyn. He tells Julia that he doesn't want her to suffer the consequences and promises that he will try to exonerate her.

Barnabas has been bitten by Angelique and tries to leave the abandoned building that she has left him in. He thinks about going to Julia for help but decides against it because he fears that Angelique will hurt her.

EPISODE 621: Julia, fearing that Barnabas is dead or worse, goes to Blair's house to stake Angelique. In the meantime, Barnabas returns to the Old House and is upset that Julia has gone to Blair's and guiltily says that she must know about Angelique. "Yes," Julia answers as she walks in, sounding very much like a wife as Barnabas looks very much like a philandering husband. But her tone turns gentle as she says, "There will be no recriminations. You're alive."

Julia and BarnabasEPISODE 629: Nicholas threatens to harm Barnabas if Julia doesn't agree to create Adam's mate. He tells her that if she still cares for Barnabas, she will cooperate. Julia agrees to do what Blair wants.

EPISODE 635: Julia hugs Barnabas when he tells her that Nicholas has been destroyed.

EPISODE 666: Julia refuses to believe that Barnabas is not coming back from the past although Willie tells her that a sensible woman would have given up hope by now. She is determined to will him back to the present and goes to the cemetery to try. Later, Willie tries to get a weak Julia to eat something. She continues to insist that he is coming back, but that he may be trapped in the past. She is horrified by the thought that he might be a vampire again but sends Willie to the mausoleum anyway because she has to know.
