1969-1970 - THE LEVIATHAN STORYLINE

Julia has returned from 1897 alone and has no idea what is happening to Barnabas in the past. She doggedly waits for him to return to the present, but as the weeks pass with no sign of him or from him, her worry intensifies. When he does finally reappear at the Old House, Julia soon learns that he is not the man she has come to know and love. He is cold and antagonistic toward her and does not care about Chris Jennings' curse or about the return of Quentin Collins. Julia refuses to stop trying to help Chris, and she also refuses to give up on her relationship with Barnabas even though he shows no interest in their friendship. Her efforts are successful, however, as she eventually convinces Barnabas to trust her with what is happening to him. Her persistence along with Barnabas' anger at what the Leviathans demand he do to Julia combine to make him turn to her once again, and by the time this storyline ends, Barnabas and Julia have become as close as they have ever been.

EPISODE 887:

At the Old House, Julia dejectedly reads from her latest diary entry dated 11/18/69. It has now been a month since she has returned from 1897. Although she has waited at the Old House every night hoping that Barnabas would give her a sign from the past, there has been nothing. "I'm beginning to fear that Barnabas Collins is trapped in the past and lost to me forever," she writes. She tells herself that she must not give up hope but there seems so little of that left now.

At Collinwood, Carolyn offers to take Julia to the new antique shop in town, but Julia demurs saying that she has to go to the Old House. When Carolyn protests that Julia has been doing that every day for over a month, Julia says that she is convinced that Barnabas will return. "I'm so worried that something terrible may have happened to him." She also tells Carolyn that she hasn't been herself since Barnabas has been gone. "You're very fond of him," Carolyn says gently. "Yes," Julia admits.

Julia, alone in the drawing room, then hears voices from the past saying that Barnabas and Kitty have disappeared. Julia becomes very distraught telling Carolyn that she is sure Barnabas is dead. But she quickly changes her mind, believing that she has misunderstood. She rushes to the Old House, now sure that Barnabas must be on his way back from the past, but he has not returned.

EPISODE 889

Julia hears a heartbeat emanating from Barnabas' portrait at Collinwood. When she goes to the Old House, Barnabas descends the stairs, and Julia readily throws herself into Barnabas' arms. Julia is ecstatic that he has returned, but while Barnabas hugs her back, she cannot see that his visage is cold and distant. When she tells him that she has been waiting anxiously for him, he says with a touch of sarcasm, "How devoted of you to wait for me all that time." He also tells her that he returned via the I Ching.  Although Julia does not say anything to him, she is confused because she has locked the door to the basement so he could not possibly have used the I Ching without her there to unlock the door. When Julia expresses interest in the mysterious box that Barnabas has brought with him from the past, he is very short with her, admonishing her not to touch it because it is very old.

Chris Jennings comes to the Old House, and Barnabas stoically tells him that he has found nothing with which to help him defeat his werewolf curse. Chris and Julia leave, and Julia is extremely upset by Barnabas' behavior. She explains to Chris about the I Ching saying, "There is no reason for Barnabas to lie to me." She knows that Barnabas is not himself because of the way he is treating her, and she vows to get to the bottom of the problem.

EPISODE 890

Barnabas confronts Julia as she looks over the mysterious box. His tone of voice is very harsh as he tells her not to touch it, and he orders her out of the house. Julia is quite upset and confused by the way her friend is treating her. "Barnabas, something is wrong with you. We've been friends too long," she says to him. He continues to be antagonistic, telling her, "You will give up your curious belief that you have a right to know everything about me." She refuses to leave when he once again orders her out, and she asks again about the box saying that he owes her that much. "I owe you nothing," he says coldly. She continues to say that something is terribly wrong with him, but he counters that he won't have someone around who has betrayed him.  "You would never have talked to me like that before you left....I can't forget how close we've been even if you can," Julia says. She decides to leave, but he stops her, abruptly changing his attitude and asking her to forgive him. He blames his mood on time travel saying, " I can't think of any other reason why I would quarrel with an old friend." Julia is visibly relieved by his apology. "We are friends, aren't we?" she asks smiling. "Of course," he reassures her.

Later in the episode, Barnabas and Julia discuss Quentin and whether he has survived into this century. Barnabas doesn't seem to care about his cousin at all, and in despair, Julia asks, "Barnabas, what has happened to you?"

EPISODE 900

Barnabas and Julia have a confrontation at the Old House about Olivia Corey. Julia tries to convince him that Olivia's interest in Tate's painting means that Quentin is alive. He is not interested in her theory, and she accuses him of not listening to her. He rudely tells her she makes a bad detective and that she is wasting her time as well as his. He accuses her of sounding like a hysterical woman novelist and says he is simply not interested in Quentin or Amanda/Olivia. "What are you interested in, Barnabas?" Julia asks through gritted teeth. "And don't tell me nothing because I won't believe that." She demands to know what he does care about.

Carolyn bursts in at that moment, and it is obvious that Barnabas is extremely concerned about her. "You've just given me a clue, Barnabas, as to what you do care about," Julia immediately remarks. "See how bad a detective I am," she says defiantly as Barnabas looks guiltily away.

EPISODE 905

Carolyn calls Julia to the hospital to see Grant Douglas who has been struck by a car. Julia gasps when she sees the man - he looks exactly like Quentin Collins. She struggles with her composure when Carolyn reveals that Barnabas was driving the car that hit Douglas. Julia confronts Barnabas, asking him why he didn't call her and tell her the man was Quentin. He tells her he doesn't care whether this is Quentin or not; all he cares about is that the man is dying, and he is responsible. She says she understands that, but she doesn't understand anything else about what is going on. She strongly tells him that there is much more than coincidence going on here and walks away from him.

Later, in Douglas' hospital room, Julia tells Chris that there is no information available on Douglas' background. As Chris remarks that she has been very thorough in checking the man out, Barnabas walks in. "Very thorough indeed," he says snidely. Barnabas tells Chris he shouldn't let Julia raise his hopes too high - Douglas is not Quentin. Julia counters that she believes that he is Quentin.  "You believe only what you want to believe. That's not like you at all," Barnabas says to her. She shakes her head and tells him that his sudden changes of mood have made her very skeptical. They argue in bitter tones, and Barnabas proclaims that this cannot possibly be Quentin before walking out. "Quentin Collins exists; it's the Barnabas that I once knew who doesn't," Julia then tells Chris, finishing in a near-sob.

EPISODE 907

Barnabas and Julia again meet in Grant Douglas' hospital room. Once outside of Douglas' room, Barnabas castigates Julia for almost giving away that the man is Quentin Collins. She then accuses Barnabas of erasing Quentin's memory. He tells her to be rational - the man's memory loss is due to the car accident. Julia insists that Barnabas still has something to do with that loss. They continue to be very antagonistic toward each other each time they speak, standing close together during their confrontations with Julia speaking through gritted teeth.

Barnabas later interrupts Julia's conversation with Paul Stoddard in the drawing room at Collinwood. Stoddard hurriedly leaves the room. "You have quite an effect on him, Barnabas," Julia growls as she also tries to leave the room. Barnabas moves to stop her, calling her name, but Julia continues on. "Do we really have anything to say to each other?" she says as she walks away.

 EPISODE 912

Barnabas walks into the cottage where Julia is trying to comfort Amy after her experience in the antique shop. "Did I frighten you?" he asks smugly. As he talks to Amy, Julia watches him suspiciously. She is surprised when Barnabas expresses an interest in Chris and settles himself in a chair to wait for him. "What game are you playing now, Barnabas?" she asks.  He rises from his chair to face her, asking if she is suspicious of him, and they are literally chest to chest, their faces only mere inches apart. When Amy then asks for water, Julia refuses to leave the girl alone with Barnabas. She tells him to get the water, and while he is gone, Julia tells Amy not to speak in front of Barnabas. After performing his little Leviathan mind trick on Amy when he returns, Barnabas goes to leave, saying he can't wait for Chris; he has other things to do. "I'm sure you do," Julia says sarcastically.

EPISODE 915

This is the first episode during the Leviathan storyline in which Barnabas exhibits his former feelings for Julia. Michael, the latest Leviathan child incarnation, demands that Barnabas kill Julia. "She's a very busy lady...her eyes are always wide open. Well, I want those eyes closed - permanently! I want you to kill Julia Hoffman - now!" Barnabas' eyes widen in horror at Michael's demand.  Michael says there is no reason to treat Julia like some kind of a special case and that Barnabas must forget all that happened before. "I cannot forget that Julia Hoffman risked her life for me. I cannot take her life, and I cannot let anyone else do it either," Barnabas says vehemently. Michael tells him that he can't let sentimentality make him careless. Julia is now an enemy. "I will not regard her as an enemy. Neither will you. Now the subject is closed," Barnabas says before turning and leaving the antique shop.

Back at the Old House, Barnabas lifts up the Leviathan box and demands that they hear him. "The boy demanded that I kill a good friend. I refused. He can demand it a hundred times and so can any member of the Leviathans in this world or any other world that they occupy, the answer is still the same. I still refuse. I will not do things I cannot agree with or understand." He tells himself that he mustn't let Michael upset him so. A child cannot demand that someone be killed - he has no right. He sits in his chair and begins to dream of Oberon. Oberon tells him he has no right to disobey and that he has broken their law; he is not loyal. When Barnabas asks how he has broken their law, Oberon says that enemies must be dealt with; that is the law. "I will not hurt her!" Barnabas insists. The creature tells him that he must constantly prove himself because his is an outsider and asks if Barnabas will deal with Julia Hoffman.  "No!" Barnabas tells him. "Nothing will make me change my mind." "Suppose we find out," Oberon laughs. Barnabas asks how they will make him do something against his will. The hooded figure then tells the story of the Leviathans and says that those who are not true Leviathans, i.e., those who have been taken over, will do for now. Barnabas disagrees. "They won't do - not if you demand things that are impossible, just as I refuse to do what-" Oberon abruptly disappears saying that they shall see what he will do; they know a great deal about him, about what he was...

Barnabas is then attacked by a bat, but he awakens in his chair, relieved that it was all a dream. Megan comes to his door and tells him that Michael told her he wants Julia dead. "Did he tell you I would not permit it?" Barnabas says. She asks if he can really stand up to Michael, and Barnabas says yes. He stares at Megan and feels odd, and he asks her to leave. He sees that he has no reflection and then screams in horror when he realizes he has fangs. He is a vampire again! He finds himself at the docks and attacks a woman.

Again at the Old House, Barnabas collapses in his chair. His "victim" appears as does Oberon who asks him if he wants more of this, if he wants for this to begin again. "If it is to begin again, then perhaps it would be best for the dawn to find me here and destroy me, but I will not kill Julia Hoffman!" Oberon tells him that is not the issue; his disobedience is the issue. For the moment, Julia needn't die, but she must be dealt with, and he orders Barnabas to do it.  He also tells Barnabas that they are holding Josette hostage and that she will die horribly if Collins disobeys. Terrified, Barnabas says he cannot let them harm Josette: "Do what you want." "Julia Hoffman will understand. She's a very understanding woman," Oberon mocks. Barnabas then awakens from this dream within a dream. "They have lifted the spell. But I must obey, at least until I find a way to escape them. Forgive me Julia, dear friend," he says sadly.

EPISODE 916:

The voiceover for this episode is as follows: "Since the return of Barnabas Collins to the year 1969, one person more than any other at Collinwood has been troubled by the radical change in Barnabas. Little by little, Dr. Julia Hoffman has become convinced that the people at Collinwood are in grave danger."

Barnabas tells Elizabeth that Julia must become "one of us". Barnabas later goes to Collinwood and finds Julia reading a book on lycanthropy in the drawing room. He professes to be concerned about Chris because the moon will be full, but Julia does not believe him, saying, "You wrote him off." Barnabas angrily tells her that she continues to misunderstand his feelings and his motives; he still feels compassion for Chris. "Is that really why you're here? Or is there some other reason?" she questions coldly. "I'm sorry you feel the way you do," he says.  "So am I," she answers, turning away. When she tells him that Chris will be going to Wyndcliffe tonight, he comments that she is determined to solve this problem. "I'm determined not to give up as you have," she says, deliberately sitting down and turning her back to him. He begins to stare at her until she turns back around. "What...what are you doing? What do you want of me?" she asks nervously. He tells her she has been working very hard, and it is beginning to show. He bends down to get closer to her. "Have you been resting enough?" "Yes," she says hypnotically. She tells him she doesn't believe he is suddenly concerned about her.  He tells her she will in time and that he hopes that she finds what she is looking for. He begins to stroke her face with his hand, slow, deliberate strokes as she stares up at him. The action looks very intimate. "Goodnight, Julia," he says with a slight smile. He leaves, and Julia staggers up the stairs as if she is half asleep.

Julia falls asleep in bed with her book. She dreams of Barnabas' sensuous voice telling her that soon she will believe. "Then you and I shall be close once more, as we were long ago. We need you, Julia...Come to us...." In the dream, Julia comes down the stairs and follows Barnabas, who carries the Leviathan box, into the drawing room. He invites her to open the box and look inside. She refuses despite his insistence and runs away, but he menacingly tells her that when she sees it again, she will be compelled to open it.

Barnabas tells Elizabeth that Julia has had her dream and that Liz must stay with her when she opens the box. But when Julia comes downstairs, she manages to refuse to open the box and quickly leaves the house when Chris comes to the door. Barnabas comes out of hiding and tells Liz that Julia was able to resist the box because certain people cannot be "absorbed" due to their genetic structure. Julia is one of those people. He orders Liz to find another way to deal with Julia.

EPISODE 930:

At Collinwood, Barnabas and Julia talk about Paul Stoddard. Julia tells Barnabas that he is so totally different now and asks him what happened to him in the past. He turns away from her, claiming that nothing happened. She walks around to face him, telling him that they both know that is not true. "You used to be a man with feelings," she says. "You used to care about the people at Collinwood." "I still care about them," he claims. "That's showing some progress," she says. "That's the first sign of emotion I've seen-" "Julia, please," he interrupts with feeling. "Leave me alone. I beg you to stay out of this." She asks him what she should stay out of, but he turns from her again. "Barnabas, we've been through so much together. I think you need a friend now more than you've ever needed one before. Please let me be your friend, let me try to help," she pleads. Clearly torn, Barnabas thinks about what to do. If I tell her everything, then she will become too involved, he thinks to himself. And her own life will be in even greater danger. I've already caused enough harm. I must work this out alone. He turns back to her. "Julia, I've always valued your friendship, and that is why I don't want you involved in this," he says adamantly.  He tells her he must work to undo what has been done alone. "I don't understand," she says. "Don't try to understand. Just trust me." As he asks her to keep an eye on Carolyn, they are interrupted by a phone call from Megan Todd. As Barnabas prepares to leave in response to the call, Julia asks him what involvement he has with the Todds. "I asked you to trust me, Julia, and that's the way it must be," he says, walking out the door. Julia turns away, thoughtful and worried.

Later at the antique shop, Barnabas assures Phillip and Megan that Julia is not dangerous. When he leaves the shop, Julia, who has been waiting outside, follows him.

EPISODE 931:

Julia takes Paul Stoddard, who is in shock from his encounter with the Leviathan being, to Eliot Stokes. Stokes wants to call the police and send them to the shop, but Julia adamantly says that they must not do that yet. "Because of ...Barnabas," Eliot guesses correctly. "You think he may be involved in this." "I know he is," she says. She explains that she thinks Barnabas is involved, but not of his own free will and that he is in the shop right now. "Julia, it's time you were more realistic about Barnabas Collins." "I can't be," she answers. She begs Stokes to wait until Stoddard can speak and tell what happened so that Barnabas will not be caught at the shop by the police, and Eliot agrees.

EPISODE 935:

Julia talks to Quentin who has just lost Amanda. Quentin says that nothing counts in his life anymore, but Julia disagrees. "Quentin, there is something that counts very much. There's someone you know that needs your help - desperately." She tells him her fears about Barnabas being forced to act against his will, and begs him to help Barnabas.

Later in the episode, Barnabas and Julia encounter each other at the bottom of the stairway at Collinwood. They briefly discuss the death of Paul Stoddard. "Julia, I begged you once before, and let me beg you again, not to concern yourself with things that are better left alone. Now, I beg you once again, please." He has walked up to stand directly behind her, and she turns back over her shoulder to speak to him. "Barnabas, I must be concerned with the people that I love. People that are being hurt by what's happening. Carolyn, for one - and yes, you, Barnabas." His face shows his reaction to her candor, and he draws in a breath before she continues. "Barnabas, I know you're in some kind of trouble. I've known that for a long time. Let me be concerned. Let me try to help you," she pleads. "There's nothing you can do," he tries to assure her. He walks away from her, saying that perhaps the situation is far worse than she can imagine. She walks up behind him, telling him that she thinks he wants to something about it. She tells him that she is going to take the chance that he does want to take action. He turns back to her, asking what she means. She explains that the sheriff has found Stoddard's cufflink in the antique shop. She urges Barnabas to go to the sheriff, and tell him everything he knows. "I suppose you think it might be foolish of me to tell you all this, that you might go to the Todds, and tell them everything that you know. But I don't think you will. I think you will go to the sheriff." The scene ends with a shot of Barnabas' thoughtful face.

EPISODE 937:

Julia again asks Quentin to help Barnabas. "Barnabas helped you. You've got to help Barnabas."

Barnabas and Julia once again meet in the foyer at Collinwood. She tells him she wants to speak to him immediately, but he begs off claiming that he is tired. She refuses to be put off and says that he must listen to her this time. He again refuses. "I've told you not to involve yourself." "I'm afraid that I'm more deeply involved than I've been before." He looks alarmed. "What do you mean?" She tells him that she dug up Michael's grave and that it was empty. When she asks what that means to him, he says, "Nothing," and turns away from her. "I will tell you then what it means to me." She says that she believes Michael's death was faked. "I don't know how, but I do know why. In fact, I know so much about what's happening that you had better tell me everything." He faces her once again. "All right, Julia," he finally agrees. "I will tell you the whole story."

EPISODE 938:

As this episode opens, a thunderstorm rages outside of the Old House. Barnabas and Julia sit facing each other in front of the fireplace. The candle- and fire lit room provides a romantic looking setting for the couple's tete a tete. "Tell me, tell me what happened," Julia says anxiously. Barnabas begins to tell her what happened in the past, and the scene shifts intermittently throughout the episode to first 1897 and then 1795 and back to the present again. Barnabas and Julia are shown moving about the drawing room as they talk, their faces partially in the shadows cast by the candlelight. He tells her how he had planned to marry Lady Kitty but that they were both drawn farther into the past by the portrait of Josette. Julia's face is a mix of emotions as he tells this story - compassion for Barnabas plus her own seemingly unrequited love for him. The lightening and thunder continue to punctuate Barnabas' story as he tells Julia of his first meeting with the Leviathans. As they talk about the power of the Leviathans, Julia asks him whether they could have lied to him about holding Josette hostage.  The camera focuses on her face and reactions as he answers her. "Yes. But their other threat was not a lie, Julia.  I tried to defy them once when the child Michael wanted to destroy you. I refused. They made me a vampire for one terrifying night just to remind me of all the horrors I had once suffered, to warn me that I would stay that way if I did not follow orders." "You obviously haven't followed orders," she says a little ironically. "I'm still alive." He tells her that she is one of those who is not susceptible to the Leviathan's power. As he ends his story by telling her of the great danger they are in from Jeb, we know that Barnabas and Julia are friends, once again.

EPISODE 951:

After Barnabas fails to meet Quentin at the antique shop, Quentin talks to Julia at the Old House. They wonder what Jeb has done to Barnabas. A sudden horror overcomes Julia, and she grabs onto the mantle for support. "I know what he's done." When Quentin correctly guesses that she means Barnabas is once again a vampire, Julia dissolves into tears. Quentin tries to comfort her, saying, "I know how you feel." They discuss where Barnabas might have gone to destroy the Leviathan box, and Quentin says he will go look for Barnabas and tells Julia to stay at the Old House. Julia flatly refuses. "Whatever's happened, Barnabas needs both of us."

Julia and Quentin find Barnabas at the Blue Whale with a young woman. Julia approaches him with great concern. Speechless at Barnabas' looks and manner as well as at the Naga locket the woman wears, Julia lets Quentin lead her to the bar. She is terrified about what has been done to Barnabas. When Barnabas and the woman leave together, Julia says, "He didn't even stop to say goodbye. What has happened to him? What?"

Quentin and Julia arrive at the Old House. He tries to convince her to go back to Collinwood while he stays there, but again, she adamantly refuses. They find Barnabas in the drawing room with the body of the woman. Julia examines her and finds the vampire bites on her neck. "Barnabas!" she cries. Barnabas, tortured over what he has once again become, tries to leave the house, but Julia places her hand on him to stop him. Her hand lingers on his chest as he explains what happened. She wants to start treating him for vampirism immediately, but he insists on going after Jeb. "Barnabas, Barnabas, please!" she pleads as he rushes out of the Old House. Quentin offers to go after him. "No, you can't stop him," Julia says in a choked voice. "Nobody can." She tells Quentin they must take care of the body, but Quentin wants to take it to the antique shop to be found there. Julia refuses to let him do that, telling him they would use it against Barnabas. "Oh, he's so vulnerable now, Quentin," she says sadly. She tells Quentin that the two of them will have to protect Barnabas while he is in his coffin. Quentin bemoans Barnabas' inability to function during the day. Julia agrees that Barnabas may be unable to help them during the day, but she says that she thinks that soon, "Jeb Hawkes is going to learn that he made the biggest mistake of his life this night!"

EPISODE 952:

Barnabas returns from setting the antique shop on fire. He and Julia talk in the drawing room of the Old House. She is worried that Jeb is not finished with Barnabas yet, that he will not stop until he has put a stake through Barnabas' heart. "Barnabas, I'm sorry about your affliction," she says with immense sympathy. "But it won't go on, I promise. I will start the injections," she says resolutely. He turns to face her, standing very close to her. "You're a good friend, Julia," he says sincerely as she smiles up at him. "But my one personal score with the Leviathans to settle is the way that they made me harm you." Julia looks at him with adoration.

Later, Jeb appears at the Old House and confronts Barnabas. Julia enters and is distraught to find that Jeb survived the fire. "I hoped...I really hoped he was dead," she says in a trembling voice once Jeb has left. Barnabas is very concerned about her. "Julia, you're exhausted. When I've gone down to sleep, I want you to go back to Collinwood and get some rest. This has all been too much for you. We must get Willie Loomis back." She agrees, but says, "But until then, I will stay." She turns over her shoulder to look at him, and knowing that she means what she says and cannot be dissuaded, Barnabas just nods his agreement.

It is sunset, and Julia is asleep in a drawing room chair when Barnabas rises. She hears his approach and stands, calling his name. He comes to her, and she smiles warmly at him. "One more day safely passed - thanks to you," he says with a smile of his own. She tells him that she is frightened. "Don't be," he answers in a reassuring voice. He turns to leave, but Julia begs, "Don't go out." He tells her that he must; there is one more thing that he must do.

The scenes between Barnabas and Julia in this episode are very touching. It is obvious that they are very close, and that Barnabas truly appreciates all that Julia has done for him. Julia is very upset that Barnabas is a vampire once again. She is determined to protect him herself, no matter what.

EPISODE 963:

Julia is preparing an injection for Barnabas when they begin to discuss Jeb. Barnabas tells Julia that there is someone who can help them - Megan. He tells her that he and Megan have had a long talk. Julia is incredulous - and suspicious. "What else have you had, Barnabas?" she asks suggestively, as if, once again, she is a wronged wife. "Must you read meanings into everything I say?" he retorts. "When did you have this talk?" Julia asks, still sounding extremely annoyed with him. He refuses to discuss the topic further. He then tells Julia that the serum does not seem to be working the way it did in the past. The last time, he did not feel the need for blood. "Barnabas, you haven't given in yet, have you? Have you?" she demands. But he refuses to look at or answer her.

Later, Julia returns to the Old House just in time to find that Barnabas has bitten Megan. As Julia examines her, she looks at Barnabas. "Don't look at me that way!" he shouts. "Do you think I did this by choice?" "No, Barnabas," Julia answers in a soft voice. " I know that you did not." When she announces that Megan is dead, Barnabas sinks into a chair, tortured by what he has done. Julia comes to him and tells him that but for him, Megan would have been against them. "Don't try to comfort me, Julia." She listens to him with compassion on her face as he bemoans what has happened. They realize they must ensure that Megan does not become a vampire and go to the cellar to make a stake.

Barnabas stands at the entrance to the drawing room clutching the stake they have fashioned, entreating Julia to stay in the cellar as he does what he needs to do. "I'm coming, Barnabas." "But I've put you through so much already," he protests as she joins him. "Barnabas, I've not done anything that I've been forced to do," she answers, giving him a reassuring smile. But when they enter the drawing room, they find that Megan's body is gone.

EPISODE 964

Julia has been kidnapped by Jeb's army of dead men and has been taken to the carriage house. She awakens to find she is being guarded by Sky. She assumes that Jeb has taken her to get to Barnabas, and she tells Sky she will never tell him where Barnabas' coffin is. Jeb comes to talk to her, saying, " If you want to help Barnabas, you're going to help me." He tells her that he wants her to make him human. She agrees to help him if Jeb promises her something and keeps his word. "Leave Barnabas Collins alone," she demands with an edge in her voice.

EPISODE 970

Barnabas tells Julia about the strange room he has seen in the East Wing. He takes her up to the room, which is empty, but when he starts to enter it, Julia stops him. She adamantly tells him that she has a strange premonition about the room, but backs off, supposing that her feelings are silly. They enter the room, and Julia eventually describes the theory of parallel time that Eliot has told her about. "For example, in that other band of time, I could have made a different choice when I was at college; instead of being a doctor, I could have married and had children," she explains.

Later on, they discuss with Willie the necessity of destroying Megan Todd with a stake and hammer. When Julia goes to leave, Barnabas tries to escort Julia home for fear that Megan will attack her. With a smile for him, she tells him she will be fine alone and holds out her cross as proof that she will be protected.

EPISODE 971

Barnabas is telling Julia what he has seen after going to the room in the East Wing again. He tells her that he could not get into the room because of some kind of barrier. "I can't say I'm sorry about that," Julia says. When he asks what she means, she explains that if it is parallel time, he mustn't let himself become part of it until they know more about it because it could be very dangerous. She suggests that they talk to Stokes. Barnabas comes up close to her to tell her that they must do something else first - he knows where Megan is. Although out of camera range, it appears that Barnabas has been holding Julia's hands because when a rooster crows that dawn is near, the two of them back away and appear to disengage their hands. Barnabas then takes hold of her elbow to lead her to the Old House where they will talk to Willie about what needs to be done with Megan.

At the Old House, Julia reiterates to a reluctant Willie that Megan must be destroyed - for Megan and for Roger and "most of all, for Barnabas." The expression on her face brooks no further discussion.

Later, Barnabas, Julia and Willie discuss the steps that must be taken now that Megan has been staked. Barnabas asks Julia if she saw anything or heard anything when she was in the East Wing, referring to the strange room there. "No, Barnabas. Don't forget what I told you - it might be very dangerous." He tells her that he is drawn there. She looks very distressed as she tells him, "Whatever it is that's drawing you there, Barnabas, I hope it doesn't harm you."

EPISODE 977

Julia tells Barnabas that she cannot give him any more injections because his body has become saturated with the serum. Dawn comes quickly, and Barnabas crumples in pain. When the scene returns to them, Barnabas is sitting in a chair while Julia stands beside him, obviously holding his hand tightly. She tells him she is sorry the serum didn't work, a guilty note in her voice. He asks for her help in getting to his coffin and leans heavily against her as she leads him from the drawing room.

Julia wonders what happened to Barnabas just before dawn as she now waits for him to rise. "Will he be all right when he rises?" she asks herself. "Will he rise? Or have I destroyed him in some way?" She is upset and her guilt is overwhelming. She hears footsteps, and Barnabas weakly opens the cellar door, clinging to it as he closes it. Julia anxiously asks him how he feels. "I've never felt the need for blood so much before," he answers. Julia clutches his shoulder and moans in dismay, "No." He desperately tells her he feels out of control and that she must do something at once. "Barnabas, I will," she tries to reassure him, keeping her hand on his back. She looks at him in anguish as he says he has never felt like such a creature of the night as he does now.

Roger and Julia stand in the empty parallel time room. Roger is discussing parallel time, but Julia is completely distracted. She pays no attention to Roger, her mind consumed with worry for Barnabas.

EPISODE 980

Julia confronts Barnabas about his second attack on Sabrina. He apologizes, and in frustration, Julia questions why he did it. He asks her if she thinks he wants to do these things, and she softens her tone, sympathizing with him. "I know what you're going through, and I know the injections are responsible," she says, voicing her feelings of guilt. "Don't blame yourself, Julia." She worries that he is risking exposure while he is consumed by this extreme blood lust. "Oh Barnabas, there must be something we can do, some way of controlling your need for blood," she says, obviously very upset. He explains that he feels that his going to parallel time might be the solution for him, but Julia once again reminds him that that could be very dangerous. "You could get trapped there forever.... You belong in this time, with us."

Later, in the foyer at Collinwood, Julia and Barnabas discuss Sky Rumson's death. A strange look suddenly crosses Barnabas' face. "What's wrong?" Julia asks anxiously. "You'd better go to Carolyn and Elizabeth," he says, turning away from her. "It's starting again," she says sadly. "Yes, there's no way I can control it." He is desperate to go to the room in the East Wing, and as he hurries away from Julia and the threat he poses to her, she calls his name. "Barnabas, wait, wait!"

As Barnabas stands in the empty East Wing room, he hears Julia calling to him. "Julia. She shouldn't have followed me," he despairs, putting his head in his hands. As he turns to tell her to go back, the room changes, and he finds himself in parallel time. Julia can see and hear him calling to her, but he cannot hear her as she tries to fight the barrier between them. "He can't hear me. He's in that room, and he can't hear me," she says, near tears. "He may be trapped in there forever."

And as this storyline ends, Barnabas and Julia are once again separated - this time by a different band of time.
