1970 PARALLEL TIME STORYLINE In an effort to escape his vampirism, Barnabas has disappeared into parallel time, and Julia has no idea if she will ever be with him again. She haunts the East Wing of Collinwood hoping for a glimpse of him in the parallel time room. For his part, Barnabas is confronted with Hoffman, a Mrs. Danvers-like housekeeper, who couldn’t be more different from the Julia Hoffman he knows as his dearest friend. Julia’s East Wing vigil is eventually rewarded, and she is able to see what is happening to Barnabas in parallel time. Knowing that her counterpart plans to destroy the man she loves, Julia manages to transcend the barrier and arrives in time to save Barnabas. She begins a dangerous masquerade as Hoffman, and together again, Julia and Barnabas work to defeat Angelique and save the troubled Collins family of this time band.
Quentin of parallel time looks into Angelique’s now empty room and sees the Elizabeth and Julia of real time. When Elizabeth says that they should close the parallel time room completely, Julia shakes her head. “No, this room is his only chance of coming back to us.” Elizabeth begs Julia to leave the room with her. “It’s not doing either of us any good to just stand here.” Julia again shakes her head, refusing to leave. “I feel closer to him here.” Liz tries again to get her friend to leave with her, saying that she hates to have Julia alone in the room, but the doctor insists that Liz can go. “If I thought that I could join him,” she says wistfully, “I would stay here forever.” “Julia,” Elizabeth says a trifle reproachfully and walks away. Alone, Julia plaintively calls out to Barnabas. “Can you hear me? Barnabas, are you standing in that hall in the other time watching me? Unable to make me hear you or see you? Or has your curse, that terrible curse, been discovered? Oh, if only I knew! If only I knew!”
Barnabas and PT Quentin go to Angelique’s room to see if they can observe the room change. When Quentin opens the door, the room is once again bare, and Julia is standing there alone. Barnabas watches his friend as she calls out to him: “Oh, it can’t be hopeless. Sometime, somehow, you will hear me. Oh, Barnabas!”
Barnabas returns alone to Angelique’s room wondering if he can get back to his own time. But when he opens the door, he finds Alexis and Hoffman inside. He has a conversation with Alexis who then leaves him alone in the room. He wanders around the room thinking to himself. “All that I can think is that it is possible that Julia in that other time, in my time, stands in that hall seeing me here.” He walks to the door and cries out, “Julia, are you here? Julia, I must get back, I must. But how? How?”
Julia opens the doors to the parallel time room and is able to see Angelique and Hoffman who are discussing Barnabas. Angelique tells Hoffman that Barnabas is the only one who can ruin their plans. “Barnabas Collins must be destroyed,” she declares. “Destroyed! Barnabas! No! No!” Julia cries out. The two women in parallel time discuss the fact that Barnabas has powers and ponder his secret. “What is it?” Angelique asks. Julia looks on and asks herself desperately, “Barnabas, why can’t I get through? I’ve got to help you. I’ve got to find you.” She is extremely upset by what she has heard. While in Angelique’s room, Barnabas finds that the room has changed, and he is back in his own band of time. Julia opens the door and finds him. “Barnabas! You’re back! You’re safe!” she says excitedly. He tells her that Maggie is in terrible danger in that other time. “How can I help her, Julia? How?” Julia looks at him with concern.
The opening scene is a continuation of the previous episode. Julia tells Barnabas that she has seen Angelique and Hoffman in the parallel time room. “Barnabas,” Julia says, putting her hand on his arm. “Barnabas, we’ve been very worried about you. Angelique said that she had to find a way to destroy you.” Barnabas tells her that he intends to go back to parallel time to find Maggie. Julia argues with him about going back. “I won’t let you do it,” she says resolutely. “My mind is made up, and don’t try to change it,” he declares. “All right then, I’ll go with you,” she tells him. He tells her that that is out of the question because she has a counterpart in that other band of time. Perhaps there is a law that only one counterpart can exist in any given band of time. “I will take that chance, Barnabas,” Julia says as she looks at him with adoration, “knowing that I may never see you again.” I won’t let you take that chance,” he says tenderly. He tells her not to worry that he is in danger from Angelique and tells her to go get the key for the door and to lock him in the room. “Are you sure that there is no chance that you’ll change your mind?” she asks. “I’m positive. Now go and get that key.” Julia looks at him forlornly, placing her hand on his chest and letting it linger there. She turns to leave but looks back at him with worry and sadness.. When Julia returns with the key, the room has changed, and Barnabas is back in parallel time. “Barnabas,” Julia says in frustration. “Why can’t I get through? I’ve got to help you! I’ve got to find you!” Hoffman finds Barnabas in Angelique’s room. He tells her that she is fighting a losing battle; she is on the wrong side. “You know, at one time, I knew a woman who looked remarkably like you. She was a doctor. She was a kind person and a true friend, one who would never stand by and watch an innocent woman like Maggie Collins get hurt.”
As Hoffman prepares to stake Barnabas, Julia kills her with a blow to the head from a poker. Julia looks down at her dead counterpart and then looks into the coffin at the man she has saved once again. “Barnabas,” she says plaintively.“ I didn’t want to kill her,” Julia says to herself after examining Hoffman. “I just wanted to stop her.” She wonders what she is going to do. Julia lovingly places her hand on the top of the coffin and then leaves the secret room for the drawing room where she is confronted by Will. He thinks she is Hoffman, but she explains that she is a friend of Barnabas’ and shows him Hoffman’s body. “Julia!” Will exclaims. He explains that Barnabas has told him about his friend, Julia Hoffman. He is unfazed by the housekeeper’s death, but Julia is quite upset that she had to kill her counterpart. Julia tells Will that she isn’t sure what she is going to do. “It isn’t safe for me to be here and yet, I hate to leave him.” “I think I understand,” Will says, obviously referring to Julia’s feelings for Barnabas. Julia switches to doctor mode to hide her feelings. “As a doctor, I’ve been interested in Barnabas for a long time,” she responds flatly. “Of course,” he says. “But I don’t know what I can do to protect him here,” Julia continues. She tells Will she is worried about what Hoffman has told Angelique about Barnabas. She decides to pose as Hoffman to find out what Angelique knows. When Will argues that it is too risky, she answers that she will have to take that risk. As Hoffman, Julia searches Angelique’s room and then tells her mistress that she didn’t learn anything new about Barnabas. Back at the Old House, Julia is shaking as she describes her experience to Will. But despite his pleas that she not continue to masquerade as the housekeeper, Julia insists that she must do this. Will asks how she can do this for Maggie Collins, a woman she doesn’t even know. Julia turns to look at him. “I’m doing it for Barnabas, not for Maggie,” she says in no uncertain terms.
Julia paces in the secret room, waiting for Barnabas to rise. She smiles when she sees him lift the coffin lid and tenderly says his name, “Barnabas.” Mistaking her for Hoffman, he threatens her, but she convinces him that she is really his old friend. She picks up the stake and hammer and tells him in a shaky voice that Hoffman had them. “She was at your coffin. She’s dead now.” “You killed her.” “She had the stake at your heart, Barnabas.” He comes to her and stands just inches from her. “You did this for me. Thank you, Julia. I’m grateful to you once again,” he says gently as she smiles up at him. He immediately says that they must find a way to get her back to her own time, but she refuses to leave him. “You need me here.” She explains that Angelique believes she is really Hoffman. Barnabas protests that nothing could be more dangerous for her. “Barnabas, I will stay here. I will keep to this plan,” she insists, and then almost giggles as she says she likes being a spy. Before she leaves, he approaches her again and takes hold of her shoulders. “Dear friend,” he says with devotion. “You would have done the same for me,” she answers with a smile. He smiles at her in return. “Yes, of course.” Before she leaves, she gives him another small, shy smile. “Barnabas, be careful.” He nods, and she leaves. Later, Julia goes to the Old House to tell him about the body that Stokes is using to keep Angelique alive. They happily discuss destroying Angelique. He turns to face her, and they are once again very close. “And then it will be all over,” Barnabas says excitedly. Julia smiles at him broadly. “And then we can go back to our own time.” They plan to meet so that they can destroy the body.
At Stokes’ house, Barnabas and Julia prepare to kill the body keeping Angelique alive, but Barnabas hesitates when he sees that it is a pretty young woman with red hair (who resembles Julia). He refuses to destroy her because she is so beautiful. Julia argues with him, asking him how they will destroy Angelique unless they take this one chance they have been given. He wants her to examine the body. “You’ve haven’t been listening to anything I’ve said,” she says, exasperated. They continue to argue. “I’m determined to bring this girl back to life,” he insists. “Barnabas, in the past, I always thought you knew what was best. But this time, you are wrong.” He orders her to begin the examination, and Julia does. Barnabas becomes excited when the girl begins to respond to them. Hearing Stokes return, Julia insists that Barnabas go. “And leave you?” he asks. “You must. Go!” Barnabas reluctantly disappears, and Julia is left alone to deal with Stokes.
Barnabas insists to Julia that they bring the body of the girl to the Old House as a strategy in their fight against Angelique, but Julia argues that that is not a good idea. Barnabas is adamant, but Julia flatly says no, acting as if she suspects that Barnabas wants the girl there because he fancies himself in love with her, not because of Angelique. She presents logical reasons why he should not proceed with his plan, but he stubbornly refuses to listen and prepares to head out the door on his mission. “Barnabas, forget the girl; find Quentin,” Julia pleads. “No, the girl comes first!” he shouts. Julia walks away from him shaking her head in frustration. “You’ll have to figure out a way to control that girl yourself, Barnabas. I will not help you,” she says resolutely. He looks at her in surprise at her defiance and reminds her that he has experience in transferring life force because of Adam. “It will be easier if you help, but if you won’t, I’ll do it alone.” “Barnabas,” she says in dismay. He tells her that he has someone else who will help him, and they will get the girl tonight. She listens, obviously upset, as he calls for Will.
Barnabas and Will have brought the body to the secret room in the Old House but are interrupted by the arrival of Angelique. Barnabas and Julia hide in the secret room while Will talks to Angelique, and it is clear to them that she knows Barnabas has done something with the body. Barnabas bows his head looking like a repentant little boy. “I know, Julia…I know you want to say ‘I told you so.’” “No, Barnabas, I don’t want to say that at all.” Julia moves toward the body. “We may as well start to work.” “Julia, you said….” “I changed my mind.” Julia looks at Barnabas as the camera zooms in on him holding her hand. “Thank you, Julia,” he says humbly. Later, Julia returns to the Old House after being with Angelique. Barnabas tells her she shouldn’t have risked coming because Angelique might have followed her. “No, Barnabas, I had to warn you. She is absolutely certain that you have the girl. She will stop at nothing till she destroys you, Barnabas.” “I must be careful; we must both be careful,” he responds.
During a conversation at the Old House, Barnabas suddenly feels that Will is in danger. He wants to rush to Collinwood, but Julia stops him. “No, Barnabas, you can’t go! It’s almost dawn. I’ll go.” Barnabas argues that she can’t go without betraying her own secret, but she assures him that she will somehow find a way. “But you must promise me that you will stay here,” she says, putting her hand on his arm. He reluctantly agrees, telling her to remember it is dangerous. She gives him a small smile and leaves.
Julia tells Barnabas her meeting with Inspector Hamilton was a disaster. She is very upset that she did not know the answers to his questions. She turns away from him, saying she doesn’t know what to do. Barnabas goes to her and turns her to face him. He holds her arms and gently says her name. “Julia, you’re in no danger unless he starts questioning someone else.” Despite her fear, Julia smiles at his attempt to comfort her.
Julia tells Barnabas that she thinks Angelique is suspicious of her. “Then perhaps you had better give all this up and go back to our own time,” he responds worriedly. “No,” Julia says, lifting her chin in defiance. “But it the risk is too great-” She says she thinks she is all right for now. “Besides, Barnabas, if I leave, there won’t be anyone to protect you during the day.” “I’ll have to take that chance.” “Then I will take the same chance, too,” she tells him with determination. Julia has found where Angelique is hiding Quentin, and Barnabas wants to go get him. Julia says that she must be the one to go because Quentin will trust her. “I’m not convinced,” Barnabas says turning from her, worried once again. Julia assures him that she is right. He turns back to look at her, concern plain on his face. “Don’t worry,” Julia reassures him with a smile. “I’ll be all right.” The camera closes in first on the expression in her eyes and then on Barnabas’ eyes. Later, Julia tells Barnabas that she will go to Quentin and meet Barnabas at the Loomis House. “Be careful,” he says, hoping that Quentin behaves rationally. “I’ll be all right,” she reassures him once again as she briefly takes hold of his hand. He walks her to the door and nods as she turns to him with a smile before going out the door. Angelique hears voices in the Parallel Time room and throws open the doors. “If only we had some way of knowing what actually happened to her,” Maggie (of real time) is saying to real time Quentin. “We know that she really wanted to be with Barnabas,” he says. “But to actually go into another band of time-” “Maggie,” he admonishes her, “Our dear Dr. Julia Hoffman would go anywhere to be with Barnabas, even there.”
Angelique takes Julia to a room in the cellar of Collinwood on the ruse that it is a hiding place for Quentin. “This place is not for Quentin, it is for you, Doctor,” she announces. Julia finally admits that she is Dr. Hoffman and asks Angelique what she plans to do with her. Angelique wants Julia to answer certain questions including what she has done with Hoffman. Julia tells her that Hoffman is dead. “You killed her because she found out the truth about Barnabas Collins,” Angelique guesses while Julia shakes her head in denial. “That’s the real reason I’ve brought you here. You’re not going to leave this place until you tell me the secret of Barnabas Collins.” Julia pretends she knows nothing about Barnabas, but Angelique doesn’t believe her. “You know everything there is to know about Barnabas Collins.” She tries to hypnotize Julia, but the doctor refuses to submit. “I will never tell you what it is you want to know.” “I have plenty of time, Dr. Hoffman. Sooner or later, you will tell me everything I want to know.” “Still refuse to tell me what I want to know?” Angelique asks when the scene returns to the two of them. “Yes,” answers Julia resolutely. Angelique tells her she will leave Julia alone in the cellar. “Oh, I’ll come back every now and then to check if you’ve changed your mind.” “You needn’t bother; I won’t,” Julia resolves. Angelique tells her that she will then spend the rest of her life in this room without food or water or the chance to escape. “You are going to rot in this room, Dr. Hoffman.” She leaves, and Julia is left alone in the dark and secret room.
Angelique goes to see Julia in the cellar and taunts her, mentioning how cold it is, asking her if she is hungry or wants a glass of water. Julia sullenly answers yes. “Good,” Angelique says triumphantly. “Then tell me Barnabas Collins’ secret, Doctor.” She tells Julia that if she tells her all about Barnabas that she will let Julia go. Julia counters that Angelique will never let her go, but the blonde assures her that she will; she’ll even let her go back to her own time. “Barnabas will be looking for me, “ Julia says. Angelique says that she told Barnabas that Hoffman decided to leave, but Julia argues, “He’ll never believe that.” Angelique angrily says that a few more days, and it won’t matter what Barnabas believes.
Barnabas wonders where Julia is and goes to confront Angelique, asking her, “What have you done to Julia Hoffman? Have you murdered her, too?”
Barnabas is at Collinwood, checking the house’s blueprints for a place where Julia might be. In the meantime, Julia sits in the cellar in despair asking, “Why isn’t Barnabas looking for me? Barnabas!” she cries. “Barnabas!” Later, Barnabas goes to the cellar with Hamilton searching for Julia there. He calls her name, but Julia has fallen asleep and does not hear him. Instead, she is dreaming of Barnabas and Roxanne in Angelique’s room. They talk about traveling to Barnabas’ time, and Roxanne asks why he looks so sad. He answers because of Julia. He says that she is probably dead. Roxanne wants to know if he wants to stay in this time band, but he says no, that it would make no difference. The dream ends with a kiss between them. “No, Barnabas, please, don’t go, “ Julia moans in her sleep. “I’m alive. I’m here. Oh, Barnabas.” Barnabas still calls her name, but she does not awaken, and he tells Inspector Hamilton that he is beginning to doubt that he will find her somewhere else. They leave the cellar, and Julia wakes up. “No, no, he wouldn’t leave me here. He wouldn’t! Barnabas! Barnabas! Barnabas, I’m here. Find me, Barnabas. Please, Barnabas, find me,” she sobs.
Barnabas is desperately searching the blueprints again for a sign of where Julia might be. “Somewhere. She must be here somewhere!” he says anxiously. Maggie enters, and he tells her that they haven’t found Julia. Maggie tells him that Quentin does not believe she is alive anymore, and Barnabas looks at her horror stricken. She says that Quentin wants Collinwood closed up. Barnabas is aghast at this news. “But if Julia is hidden here-” “She isn’t,” Maggie says flatly. She tells him that he and the police have proven to everyone but him that she is not here. “It seems so final,” he says, and he wants to talk to Quentin. “If we leave her now, and Julia is hidden, she will die.” But Maggie refuses to believe that Julia is alive. After Maggie leaves, Barnabas picks up the blueprints once again. “Julia,” he says with feeling. “Julia.” Later, Barnabas asks Roxanne to use her psychic powers to locate Julia. Roxanne holds a scarf Maggie has retrieved from Hoffman’s room and describes the woman who owned it. “Where is she?” Barnabas demands. “Where is she?” Roxanne declares that the woman is dead. “She is dead! This woman is dead!” Barnabas says that he has been a fool continuing to hope, and Maggie says that they will close the house tonight. “Yes,” Barnabas says sadly. He sinks down onto the sofa, and Roxanne asks what is wrong. “What you have just told me gives me great grief. She was a true friend.” He walks Roxanne to the door. “Roxanne, if it weren’t for Julia, tonight would be a very happy night for me.” Maggie and Barnabas stand in the foyer, ready to leave Collinwood. Maggie turns off the light and says, “Who will ever turn that light on again? Who will ever live here again?” Barnabas stands staring into the drawing room. Maggie, seeing him look away as if in pain, goes to him and puts a hand on his arm. “You’re thinking of Julia,” she guesses. “Yes,” he says in an agonized voice. “But you do believe Roxanne?” she asks. “Yes,” he says even more slowly and painfully as he turns and walks slowly out of the door. “It’s over Barnabas,” Maggie says once outside, and she walks away. Barnabas lingers a moment, looking at the front door with sadness before turning to leave.
Barnabas and Maggie talk at the Old House. “I can’t get over the fact that Julia is gone,” he says sadly. “I’ll never forgive myself for letting her stay here.” Maggie picks up Hoffman’s scarf and says it would be ironic if Quentin were to be freed by Hoffman of all people. A light goes on in Barnabas’ eyes as he realizes what has happened. “Good Lord, what a fool I’ve been!” he exclaims. He grabs the scarf. “The scarf belongs to Hoffman; it’s Hoffman who is dead. Julia may still be alive,” he says excitedly, hope rising in him. He smiles. “There’s still the possibility that Julia’s alive!” He tells Maggie to bring down Julia’s suitcase which is upstairs, and he goes to find Roxanne. Roxanne holds Julia’s broach and sees a vision of Julia. She leads them to the cellar in Collinwood. Barnabas calls out Julia’s name, and they can hear Julia crying. Julia finally hears Barnabas calling to her. “Julia! Julia!” “Barnabas! Oh, Barnabas, is it you?” “Yes! Thank God, you’re alive!” Back at the Old House, Barnabas tells Julia that the police are waiting to see her. He holds her arms and asks gently, “Do you feel up to it?” She grasps his arm and assures him that she does. This storyline ends with Barnabas and Julia trapped in Angelique’s room as Collinwood burns around them.
