Mikko Kivisto is the Lord of the Rings…well… at blitz!

FM Mikko Kivisto shrugged off a 5 hour car ride to loll around in the Sunway Lagoon, KL, Malaysia to check out the Lord of the Rings pewter and along the way, win the Lord of the Rings blitz event. In the Finals, he ousted Malaysian FM Mok Tze Meng 1.5-0.5 to clinch the title.

Mikko will be providing more details later…

The Law catches up with the Docs...
The annual Inter-professionals chess teams once again had the Doctors vieing with the Lawyers for the clincher. This year, the law caught up on the Doctors again and inflicted a severe 3-1 pounding on the hapless docs. IM Terry Toh, in a scintillating display of aggression, took out IM Hsu Li Yang on top board. Malcolm Tan accounted for Dr Nithia with Black in a Sicilian Kan on Board 2, and on Board 4, Wong Meng Leong overpressed and lost to Gilbert Koh. Only Dr Chen Chih Ming salvaged some pride for the docs after beating former Malaysian International Gregory Vijayendran.

One amusing incident:
Nithia - NM Choong Liong On - 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.d4 cd 4.Nxd4 Nc6 5.Ndb5 d6 6.Bg5?? (Bf4 is correct)  Nf6?? (when 6...Qxg5 is virtually winning) and Nithia won later. Needless to say, everyone  else saw and held their breath...
