Australia, affectionally known as "The Land Down Under" has a population of 18,508,000 people which is approximately 0.3% of the worlds population. 94% of those people are European, 4.5% Asian and 1.5% Aboriginal. Australia lies in the Southern Hemisphere and Australia is the only country in the world that occupies an entire continent. The bulk of population is concentrated along the east, south-east and south-west coast. The total area of Australia is 7,682,292 square km's. 3200 km's north to south, and 4000 km's east to west. Captain James Cook landed on the Australian shore at Botany Bay on April 28th, 1770. The First Fleet in 1787, were so overcrowded that 732 convicts along with 641 civilians were shipped to Port Jackson NSW which would later become known as Sydney. This landing took place on January 26th, 1788 and each year, on this day, it is declared a public holiday to commemorate the landing of the first settlers. This day is better known as, Australia Day.
