Transport to all Tasmanian Prisons

For visitors living in the north and north-west of Tasmania without transport, a bus is provided monthly by the Launceston City Mission.  For information about dates for this bus, or to book a seat telephone the Launceston City Mission on (03) 6331 6999.

The bus leaves Launceston at approximately 9.45 a.m. on one Saturday per month.  When it arrives in Hobart, visitors to Risdon Maximum Security, the Prison Hospital, Medium Security or the Women’s Prison can access the Visitors Centre at Risdon.  The Visitors Centre is open from 11.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. on ‘City Mission’ days.  Childcare facilities are not available but children are welcome in the company of their parents or other adults.  Visitors are welcome to relax and spend time at the Visitors Centre prior to and after they attend visits at the Prison.

The bus departs from the Risdon Prison complex at approximately 3.30 p.m.  During the Christmas season an extra bus may also be scheduled by Launceston City Mission. 

For visitors to Hayes Prison Farm, Metro buses run six (6) times a day from Hobart Stop F to New Norfolk.  If you are travelling from Hobart to the Risdon Prison Complex, Metro runs a regular service from Hobart Stop C.  To find out the specific times for these services contact Metro on 132201.

If you wish to travel from Launceston to Hobart to visit, Redline Coaches offers a service that runs three (3) times a day during week days and twice on weekends.  Contact Redline Coaches on 1300 360 000 for more information.

Launceston City Mission has also combined with Anglicare Burnie to provide a bus service from Burnie to Risdon Prison with connecting services to Hayes Prison Farm and Hobart Remand Centre.  This bus operates the fourth Saturday of each month, leaving from Burnie Park, near Strahan Street, Burnie.  The time of departure is approximately 7.30 a.m.  The bus will arrive Risdon Prison complex at approximately 12.30 p.m.  During the time the bus is at Risdon Prison the visitors centre will be open for use.  The bus will then leave from the Risdon Complex at approximately 3.30 p.m.
