Women's Fashions
Notice how high wasted the gowns are? This was known as the empire waist style. This style always reminds me of the regency era as the ladies gowns also had this high empire wasted gowns. This style is flattering to every figure and the hobble skirt was tight fitting against the body, sometimes you could not walk right. The gowns also adopted from mens suit style fashions as they began to work in men's professions. Sports also contributed to womens fashions. They became lighter, practical, and more comfortable to wear. Also notice the parasol the lady is carrying? They help a lady from getting a tan, and they often matched the color or pattern of the ladies gowns. The latest styles came from Paris.
Since the bra was not invented until after WW1, the ladies had to squeeze themselves in to these long line corsets. The nice straight slim silhouette was the style the ladies desired. As the dresses became longer so did the corsets sometimes it was designed and worn to a ladies knee. It was almost impossible to walk, move and even sit down in a chair. Im very interested in these corsets after Kate Winslet squeezed herself into this style in the movie TITANIC.
