HISTORY OF HANCOCK COUNTY, ILLINOIS, 1880
Chapter VI, The Mormon Period, by Thomas Gregg
Jail, Carthage, Illinois* |
*This is the jail in which Joseph Smith and Hyrum Smith were placed after they were arrested for treason. It is also here that they were killed.
"Resolved, That the time, in our opinion, has arrived, when the adherents of Smith as a body should be driven from the surrounding settlements into Nauvoo. That the prophet and his miscreant adherents should then be demanded at their hands, and if not surrendered, a war of extermination should be waged to their entire destruction, if necessary for our protection (adopted in Warsaw and Carthage, page 320)."
". . . a new warrant charging Joseph and Hyrum with treason had been issued, and they were again arrested by the constable (page 321)."
