1959 AUGUSTA COMMUNITY LIVESTOCK ASSOCIATION
This is the webmaster, Ken Bowles, showing one of his dad's purebred Hampshire hogs. I think around this time I decided not to be a farmer, ha.
This is a view of the stage from the grandstand. The scenery was borrowed from the fair in Pittsfield, Illinois. There is an orchestra on stage. I do not remember the name of the talent. The Baptist Sound truck from Jacksonville, Illinois, is to the left. Ed Standley, the sound man, is in the back of the truck next to the controls of the public address system. Ed is busy setting up the microphones for the program in the last two pictures. Note the Secretary's Office to the far right in the third picture.
The Secretary's Office was the heart of the fair. It was a bandstand on wheels with plywood sides that could be put up to keep out the wind and the sun. These three ladies were paid. I also worked there, answering phones and making announcements on the paging system that covered the fairgrounds. I got paid if the fair took in enough profit, ha. If you know the identity of these ladies, please email me with the information! Their main function was to keep the books on the livestock judging and issue award checks to winners. The second picture reveals how they watched the show in the evening when the workload was lighter. TheSecretary's Office was on the southeast corner of the arena. The stage was in the center of the arena. The main grandstand was on the side opposite from the office. A small uncovered grandstand was occassionally placed just to the north of the office.
