Harmony of the Gospels

In order to understand the purpose of the Gospel of Luke, one needs to consider why the author selected to include these events of the Lord's life. He used many passages found in the other Gospels and he added some exclusive to this account. The table below identifies the similarities and the new material.

Luke says of his choice, "Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us, Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word; It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, . . . (Luke 1:1-3, KJV)."

Luke seems to be saying that the controlling principle of his selection was simply to confirm facts within the oral tradition. However, the end goal was a report of the events to Theophilus. Depending on who Theophilus was (see the "Introduction to the Gospel of Luke" page), Luke may have selected events most useful in impressing recipient.

If the position of Theophilus is the controlling factor, an investigation of the selected events may provide some clues to his identity. You may decide for himself.
