Setting: Sometime between The Courtship of Princess Leia and Heir to the Empire.

Summary: After an argument with Leia about her Jedi training, Luke leaves Coruscant only to disappear. And it's up to Leia to try and find him before he's lost forever.

Zwilling

It's late, she thought, as she watched the sun settling in the sky across the city landscape. Where is he? she wondered, as she continued gazing out at the sun. Suddenly, she heard a noise from behind her, reaching out with the Force she could tell that it wasn't Luke that was walking toward her, but she knew who it was all the same. She didn't start as Han's arms took her in a warm embrace.

"What ya lookin' at out there?" Han asked.

"Just admiring the view, and thinking..." Leia let her thought drift off as she continued to stare at the blazing sphere as it slowly sank into the night. ...about Luke she finished silently, where is he? she wondered again.

"Come on, Princess, tell me what's got you so quiet," Han implored.

Knowing that she wouldn't be able to keep it from him, Leia began. "It's Luke. I don't know where he's gone off to, and it has me concerned. It's not like him to just up and leave like he did... but after that terrible fight we had, I just don't know what to think."

"What fight? I don't remember you two having a fight, you've always been so close. I can't imagine you not speaking," he said.

Fighting to keep her emotions under control she continued, "It happened when you and Chewie were on Kashyyyk. At the time it was so infuriating, and I still think that I was right; but now, I'm wondering if he wasn't just a little right, too." Leia paused to decide what to say next.

Ah, now we're getting somewhere, Han thought, as he stood silently, holding his arms around her. He didn't think he would ever completely understand the bond between those two, but he respected it all the same.

"Anyway," she continued, "it started when he came over to discuss my Jedi training. We were talking, and all of a sudden we were fighting. Strange, because neither of our voices rose at all."

At that, Leia had a far away look in her eyes, and Han could tell that she was reliving the argument in her minds-eye...

"What do you mean, you're wasting away Leia? How dare you criticize me about how I've chosen to lead my life. Just because I've not followed the same path that you have, my work here in the government is important. Luke, I will work on my Jedi training, just not right now, it's not a good time."

"When, Leia? When will it be a good time to open yourself up to the possibilities of the Force? I understand that your work for the New Republic is very important; and I would never doubt your abilities in that position, but your performance of your duties would only be heightened if you allowed yourself to be instructed in the Force," Luke stopped, hoping that his words would sink through to the more stubborn of the twins.

However, Leia didn't back down, if anything, she gained more resolve to defend her position. Luke could actually see her have to keep from yelling, and maintain her composure not wanting to give him even that little of a victory. "No, Luke. I'm not going to let my life's choices be decided for me. How I choose to lead my life is, just that, my choice. Mine and no one else's, and right now I choose to concentrate on helping Mon Motha here on Coruscant. Right now, that holds a greater precedence." As she looked into her brother's blue eyes, she could read so much emotion, so many different emotions each fighting for control. Mostly she could see hurt, she could see how she had hurt him by defying the Force, and through that, defying him. Good, she thought with a hint of smug satisfaction, serves him right for always thinking he has to be right. With his next words, the smugness disappeared, however the satisfaction at seeing her twin squirm didn't.

"As you wish, Leia. For now, I will leave you to lead your life here working in the government. But just remember that just because you deny the part of you that is the Force, you aren't immune to it's power. Both the light and the dark. And also remember that no matter your choice, I will always love you. Still, I wish that you would reconsider. Leia, just come with me for a little while to study and practice, please..." He left his last sentence hanging open, silently pleading with her to join him. Yet, again he could see her resolve strengthen at his words.

Quietly, so low he could barley hear her response, all she said was "No." With that, she turned and left the room, never looking back to see the sad yet understanding look on her brother's face as she retreated from view.

"That was three weeks ago," Leia remarked after a couple of moments.

Silently Han stood beside her, taking in everything she had told him. A breeze stirred around the two and he held her closer, hoping to warm her with his embrace. Looking up at the stars and ships in orbit, he wondered where Luke had gone to. Silently he wondered if Luke was okay, and if that could be why Leia was so upset all of a sudden.

After a few moments, she continued, "That's not all. A few days after our confrontation, I received a call from Luke. It was late, and I was tired, and the last thing I wanted to do was to get into another argument. Still, when he called, my only reaction was hostility. We spoke briefly, he asked me again to come with him, and again I refused saying that I had to stay here on Coruscant. He became silent, and after a moment or two he told me that he was leaving Coruscant, but didn't know for how long. Han, I know that I was right in waiting to continue with my training, yet now I really wish that I had gone with him."

"Leia, it's getting late. Why don't we go inside? You can finish telling me about all of this in there," he darted his head in the direction toward the door inside, but she continued looking out across the city where the sun had been setting earlier. Once again, he caught himself looking up at the stars, wondering just where Luke was, and how he was. *Although, he thought, the kid must be okay, Leia would know if he wasn't.* With that, Han went inside, waiting for his wife to follow him when she was ready.

Leia chose to keep standing by the rail of the balcony, looking out across space; and by the look on her face, it seemed as if she was looking across time as well. Luke, oh how I sometimes wish that you were still that farmboy that I met on the Death Star. Young, idealistic, eager, and even carefree. There are a lot of things that I miss from those times, and yet I'm relieved to be living in the here and now. Luke, where are you? Why can't I sense that you're there? Even without fine tuning my abilities in the Force, I've always been able to feel your presence, but now you're a blank. Are you too far away, or is something wrong? Luke if you can hear me, call out to me, tell me that you are all right... She was moved from her trance-like state when she heard Han behind her again, he'd come back outside looking for her. She realized that she had no idea how long it had been since he had gone inside.

"Han, I have to go after him, I have to make sure that he is okay. Whether he wants me there or not after how we've fought, I have to go."

"Okay, tomorrow morning we'll prep the Falcon and me, you and Chewie will try to find him. Do you have any idea about where to start looking? It's a big galaxy, you know," he was trying to get her to smile, but his jest was met with silence. "Okay, I'll go in and tell Chewie. Please, come inside sweetheart."

As he went inside, a single tear sliding down her face glistened in the moonlight.

Early the next morning, while Leia was readying what they would need for the trip, Han and Chewie were working on getting the Falcon ready for take-off, which as always was a complicated task. At least it was easy to rise at such an early hour, with Leia upset about Luke, neither she nor Han got much sleep. Chewie, on the other hand, wasn't quite so cheerful about the early morning, but tried to keep his complaints to himself. Well, at least, he only complained a couple of times.

"I know, Chewie, I know. But this had Leia upset, you know how strange it can be with the way those two seem to be connected. Besides, once she gets her mind set on something, you can't convince her otherwise. Luke commented once about her being the stubborn twin..."

"He said what?" Han stood, startled at the voice coming from behind him, and as a result banged his head against the underside of the Falcon. "I asked you, what did Luke say about me?" Leia asked again, her confusion showing on her face.

"Well, maybe he didn't actually say it," Han stammered, "but he definitely implied it though. Come on, don't get mad at me now, too."

"Could we please just leave, the quicker I find Luke the sooner I'll feel better about all of this," she asked. With that, she turned and climbed up into the Falcon, beginning to store what she had packed. Outside, Han and Chewie exchanged shrugs, and tried to finish the work as quickly, and as silently, as possible.

They had been underway for a couple of hours, having chosen to look on Dagobah first, when Leia awoke with a start. Actually, she didn't remember falling asleep, but she did remember the dream she had been having when she awoke. Luke? she called out in her thoughts. Luke, are you there? She didn't hear a reply, rather she felt one. A wave of dispair, exhaustion, and even fear washed over her. "Luke!" she cried, loudly enough for Han to hear.

He rushed to her side to see what was wrong. "Leia. What is it, why did you call out for Luke? Did he contact you? What did he say? Where is he? Is he okay?"

She quickly tried to compose herself and then responded to Han's continuous questions. "No, Han, I didn't hear him, but I did feel him. You might not understand quite what I mean, but I was overwhelmed by emotion. Despair, exhaustion... fear. That was all, I couldn't even tell which system the emotions were coming from, but it wasn't Dagobah. It was somewhere out around Yavin." The fear on her face was evident, and Han took her into his arms, trying to console her.

"Han, that's not even the worst part of all of this. I never told you the worst part of all of this," after she said that she looked into his eyes, and seeing only love, she continued. "The worst thing is I fear what if I don't get him back?"

"Of course we'll get him back, we always have..."

She cut him off by saying, "What I meant was, what if something awful happens and I never get another chance to talk to him? Will he know how important and special he is to me? Or will he just remember the last time we talked and how distant and hostile I was? I couldn't stand knowing that I lost him and he thought I dispised him, or even worse that I didn't love him..." Her words trailed off with that, an unconditional declaration of love to the only brother she'd ever known, even if she'd only known him for such a short period of time.

Han drew her close, hugging her, "Don't think like that. He knows how you feel about him, how could he not? One fight doesn't constitute the end of your relationship, in the end it will only make the bond between the two of you stronger. Trust me."

Hearing those words, some of the doubt ebbed off of her face, still the fear for Luke remained, it seemed to have etched itself into her eyes permanently.

"How much longer till we jump out at Dagobah?" she asked.

"About two hours, and then we can make another jump out to Yavin and start looking around there. Maybe once we're closer you'll be able to pick up on Luke a little better. Why don't you try to get a some more sleep, you didn't get hardly any last night."

With that, he kissed her cheek, and headed back into the cockpit, mainly to check up on Chewbacca and make sure he hadn't dozed off at the controls. Behind him, Leia settled back down into her couch, trying to forget the image of Luke that she had seen in her dream. The image was a haunted one, and it chilled her to the bone. Luke, what's wrong? Where are you? And with those thoughts she drifted off to sleep again.

She didn't awaken until they were about ready to come out of hyperspace at Yavin. In fact, she had totally slept through stopping briefly at Dagobah. Groggily she made her way into the cockpit, and sat down in the co-pilot seat. Guess Chewie's taking a nap somewhere, she thought. She saw on the clock that she had been asleep for several standard hours, and that they would be at Yavin in about one more. She heard Han enter the cockpit behind her, surprise showed on his face at seeing her in Chewie's seat.

"When did you wake up, sweetheart? You weren't in here a couple of minutes ago," Looking at her closely he asked, "did you hear anything more from Luke? Do you have any better of an idea as to where we should look first?"

"No. I just had the same dream again, though. I couldn't make out anything really distinguishable about where it was, but it scares me all the same. It's dark and hazy where ever I am in the dream, and Luke is there. He's sad and alone, feeling like... like he doesn't have any hope of anything after. Mainly, it scares me because those feelings are so unlike Luke. He always has hope."

"Don't worry, we'll find him. Right now, just try to concentrate on seeing if you can feel him. Anything could help, you never know. Do you remember anything else from your dream? Anything that might help us to decide where we should look first? A smell, a sound, anything?" As he spoke those words, he was flooded with compassion for Leia, and the grief that she was putting herself through. I swear, he thought, how does that kid manage to get into so much trouble? True a lot of time had passed since he'd picked up a kid, an old guy, and a couple of droids in Mos Eisley, but he would always think of Luke as a kid.

He was started out of thoughts when Leia broke the silence saying how "it was cold, but not like Hoth. And like I said before it was dark and hazy, but there was a glow coming from somewhere beyond what I could see. In the middle of the scene was Luke, just lying there on the floor. He wasn't moving, but he was alive. Although his spirit had taken a severe blow, he was so discouraged. I don't understand why I can't feel him when I'm awake like this, yet I can almost touch him in my dream."

"Hon, maybe it was just that, a dream. Are you certain that it was any more than that? I know it doesn't explain why you can't feel him, but he could be just fine..." however, he was interrupted when Leia jumped up from her chair and went back into the room where she had been sleeping. As he followed he could only wonder what she was up to now, but he thought he had heard her whisper as she'd leapt up, he thought he'd heard the name Luke. Han stopped once, while following her, to yell at Chewie to get up into the cockpit and get ready for the jump back into real space. "Sweetheart, what is it?" he asked as he rounded the turn into their room.

"Luke. I felt him again. And you're wrong, he's not fine, something terrible has happened to him. Sitting there in the cockpit I reached out to him again, like so many times before, only instead of a warm touch, or even nothing at all like earlier, there was grief, and dispair. He's giving up Han, he's giving up." With that she sank into the couch and began crying softly, wondering if she would get the chance to ever embrace her brother again, and show him that there is always hope, even in the darkest of times.

It wasn't long before the jumped out near the Yavin system. However, they still had no idea as to where to go from there. Luckily, there were few habitable worlds near Yavin, so that helped their search. Since not sure where to start, Han picked the Fayete System. It was the closest to Yavin, and had two inhabitable worlds in orbit around the aging star. The closest to the sun, Fayete Three had been deserted for at least two centuries, so a quick sensor sweep revealed no life signs emanating from the planet. Hoping to limit the search, they decided that since nothing showed on the sensors, that it was a safe bet Luke wasn't there. Fayete Six, however, was inhabited. The species that lived on the lush world had never had much contact with either the Empire or New Republic, and were a species that generally kept to themselves. Again, no human readings were picked up coming from the planet's surface.

The next system from Fayete that they went to was the Ansis system. Ansis was a binary star system, two identical glowing stars orbited each other, each in turn with their own worlds. Of the fifteen different worlds included in the Ansis system, three were habitable by human standards. One of the three orbited Ansis A, the other two circled around Ansis B.

"Han," Leia's voice broke the silence that had filled the cockpit. "Han, it's that one, the fifth planet orbiting the second sun. Don't ask me how I know, but he's there."

"Do I ever question you when it comes to you and Luke? Okay, dumb question, but I never question the important things," Han said with a grimace, "Chewie, get to checking if there is somewhere that we can set the Falcon down. Then the fun will start..." Han stared out the front window, while Chewie examined specs about the fifth planet of Ansis B, Zwilling. Strange, in the computer's data about the planet, it said that the planet's odd name was a translation from a long forgotten tongue, and the meaning had long since been lost.

The largest city on Zwilling, if you could even call it that, was a small area of land that included a cluster of buildings. Dosis, the capital, had a rather small population for a capital city of a world, but the people of Zwilling were mostly involved in agriculture and few people were needed in the urban areas.

After sitting the Falcon down at what acted as a space port, they decided to walk around the town for a little while and see if Leia might sense something. Soon, the Falcon was secured and they left.

As they walked down the main street of the town, Leia seemed to become more and more distant, as if she had a destination but didn't realize it. The longer they walked, the quicker she went, after several minutes she stopped in front of an old building, on the very edge of the town.

The building was several stories tall, and seemed to have been deserted for a long time. The door to the building wasn't locked, and as they ventured inside it looked even more run down. However, by this time, Leia was proceeding at a jog, and seemed to not take notice of the state of disrepair of her surroundings. Han and Chewie, on the other hand, did notice that this building that she was heading deeper and deeper into ought to be condemned, much less should they be wondering around inside of it.

"I know, Chewie. There are about a million other places I rather be right now, too; but calm down, I think she knows where she's going. Let's just give her a little leeway right now. And hurry up will ya, we haven't got all day." With those words it sounded as if Han was reminding himself as much as Chewie about the situation they were in, but Leia was too far ahead to hear either of their comments.

The farther she walked, the more certain she was that she was heading in the right direction. Luke? You are there aren't you? Call out to me, lead me to you. Almost blindly she hurried down walkways and corridors that she had never seen, yet she felt as if she had been there before. As she rounded a corner in the hallway, she thought that she heard a familiar voice calling her, Leia? Is that you? It can't be, it's not possible. At the thought of that sad, whisper of a voice, she had to fight to keep her emotions under control. She had to keep control if she was to find her brother and take him back home where he belonged. Luke! she cried out in her mind. Luke, it's me. Where are you? This time she didn't hear an answer, but she could again feel his distress. What could be making him feel this way? she wondered.

Suddenly, she heard some one call out her name, and it seemed to echo off all of the walls in the building. She turned at the sound of Han's voice reaching out to her, and called back, "This way, I think that I've almost found him! Hurry!" With those words she hurried on, leaving Han and Chewie to have to catch up.

As she turned left into a side corridor, she was faced with a large window that looked down into a room below. At the time it hardly even registered how such a large window had remained intact while the rest of the building was in shambles. For she was too taken by the view presented before her on the other side of the glass.

The room below was very dark, and in the center lay Luke, not moving. Just like in my dream, she thought, even the strange ight is there, too. For a moment, she just stood there looking down at her brother, but then she was spurred into action. She hit the glass hoping that it would break, and after a couple of tries, she heard Han and Chewie coming up the corridor behind her.

"In here," she called to them. When they entered the room she asked "help me get through this window. I've got to get to Luke." They walked up from behind her and looked down through the window, seeing the still form of the jedi lying on the floor below.

"Hold on, princess, that's an awfully long drop," Han said, "It'd be best to try and find another way in..."

"Do you see any other way in?" she cut him off in mid-sentence. "Look, there isn't any door down there. Who knows how who ever put him there got him down there. All that matters right now is that we get him out. Now." She turned to face the window again, looking at her brother. "Wait a minute," she paused for a second to finish her thought and then said, "where's Artoo? He should have been with Luke. In fact, I don't remember seeing Luke's X-Wing either."

"Oh boy, Artoo's lost too?" Han commented, "Am I glad we didn't bring Goldenrod along on this trip, he wouldn't be too happy about this at all." At the mention of C-3P0, Chewie let out a growl agreeing with Han, but he added that he was just glad the complaining droid wasn't there period. "Chewie, I know you and 3-P0 don't always get along, but right now let's just concentrate on figuring out a way to save the kid down there without killing one of us in the process." With that, they got to work trying to cut through the window.

After cutting through the window, Chewie stayed at the top while Leia and Han scaled the wall down into the chamber where Luke lay. When she reached the floor, Leia ran to the center of the room where Luke was, taking his head into her hands.

"Luke?" she asked tentatively "come on Luke, talk to me." She searched his eyes for signs of recognition; however, his eyes stayed cloudy, like he was there, but hidden behind his conflicting emotions.

"Come on kid, it's time to get out of here," Han said as he neared the two of them in the center of the room. Still, he remained unresponsive.

Luke? she called out in her mind, please Luke, answer me. Her thoughts must have moved something inside of him, because at her words he blinked as if trying to clear his mind.

Leia? Is it really you? They said you wouldn't come, and I believed them. How could you come, after our fight, after I just left without a word? Luke was thinking so fast that she had to scramble to catch it all. She couldn't believe it, he was blaming himself for the way they had argued. Didn't he know it was all her fault?

"Of course I came after you," she replied aloud. "How could I not come and find you. Who told you that I wouldn't come, and why did you believe them?"

The voices, his eyes had cleared, and he seemed more responsive. He continued, after I crashed near here, someone brought me here and left me. That's when the voices in my mind started. At first I didn't listen, but I couldn't keep fighting them.

"Voices, Luke? Where did they come from? Have you seen who it was that brought you here? What did they say to you?"

"I hate to break this up, but we really need to get out of here before any company arrives," Han started, "Help me get him over to the ropes and Chewie will pull him up. Maybe we'll be able to work through all of this better once we're on the Falcon and leaving this rock."

Leia?

"What is it Luke?" she asked.

Artoo. We have to go and get Artoo, he's probably still with my X-wing.

"Okay, Luke. Han, we have to go get Artoo. When we get on board the Falcon scan the immediate area for his X-wing, hopefully Artoo will be with it still.

After hoisting Luke up and through the opening in the window, the slowly began carrying him back to the Falcon. Luckily, it wasn't too far back to the spaceport. As they walked, Luke seemed to slowly start to regain the strength he'd lost while stuck in that room. To save time, Leia had decided to wait about asking him any more questions until they were aboard the Falcon.

As soon as they were on board, Han and Chewie set about finding Artoo. The droid was still with his ship, actually the X-wing was pretty far away. Soon they were underway, after a quick stop to pick up the confused little droid.

While in hyperspace, Leia finally had a chance to talk to Luke about what had happened to him on Zwilling. She was especially curious as to why they didn't see anyone else the entire time they were on planet. Who had taken Luke, and what were the voices he had heard?

"From what I gathered while I was on the planet, most of the inhabitants are ground dwellers, " Luke began, "they only come up during harvest or when something needs to be worked on in the city." He stopped, closing his eyes and deciding on how to proceed, "I don't know why the one took me into that room and left me, or why he didn't try to stop you from rescuing me. Anyway, I was taken care of, at least they gave me food and water."

"Luke, the voices, tell me about the voices you heard," Leia asked, "what could they have said to make you feel so alone and hopeless? Where did they come from, do you know?" She wanted to ask so much more, but thought it best to take it a little at a time.

"The voices were my own doubts magnified. Something on the planet took my distress over our confrontation and focused on it. It only happened while I was in that room, in fact, I don't think that the man who put me in there even knew it would happen. Actually, I think it was the lighting in the room that caused it," he paused for a moment, not sure what to say next.

Leia put her arm around him to comfort him. She couldn't believe that it was because she was so stubborn that Luke ended up in such a state. However, all she said aloud was, "go on, Luke."

"It didn't start immediately, so the first day or so that I was in there I spent trying to find a way out. But the longer I was under that light, the weaker I became. After only a couple of days, it was all I could do to stay conscious. My connection to the Force seemed to dwindle, it became very distant, but it never completely went away. That's when the voices started.

"The voices," he paused, "at first it was just me thinking to myself. Slowly, it became more focused. They kept telling me how I was all alone, that I'd lost or driven off everyone that had ever cared for me; how no one would bother to look for me, because there was no one left to look. But the voices were wrong, you came looking for me didn't you?"

Leia's eyes were brimmed with tears when she said, "Luke, I was angry for so long about how you had to be right about everything. At least that's how I saw it at the time. How could you ever doubt how much I care about you? You're my twin brother, I can't imagine what my life would be like without you in it."

Luke thought about that for a moment or two and then asked, "but how could you feel that way after how I acted that day on Coruscant?"

He was still blaming himself for their argument, "oh, Luke, our fight wasn't your fault... it was mine. That's partly why I had to find you. I couldn't stand the thought of losing you, and you not knowing how much you mean to me. I love you, brother, nothing will ever change that. I didn't want you to die thinking that you were all alone in the universe, because you're not, you'll always have me."

Luke smiled briefly, then said, "Leia, don't blame yourself for us fighting. I guess it was actually both of our responsibility. You know, I just thought of something..."

"What's that?" Leia asked, looking into his blue eyes, that were once again shining.

"I figured out what Zwilling means, at least what it means to me."

"And?"

Luke smiled when he said, "it means twin."
