Chapter 10

About 20 minutes later we arrived at the beach. It looked so beautifly with the waves crashing gently on the shore. There were a few clouds in the sky, just enough so that it wasn't too terribly hot outside.

Erik would have to stay at the beach with us, since you never know when some crazed fan would come along. Besides, he was our only ride home.

Nick and I ran down to the surf and started splasing water at eachother.

We sat in the water laughing for a second or so, and then Nick stood up and picked me up out of the water, hoisted me over his shoulders, and carried me deeper into the water, throwing me in when the water was about rib-deep.

The whole time I was laughing and squirming, trying to get away, because I knew what he was going to do to me.

He had turned around and was heading back to the thoe, but I ran (extremely slow) through the water and jumped on his back, causing him to loose his balance and fall below the water.

He came up sputtering and dunked me right back.

After a few minutes of that, I said, "Hey, let's go furter, I'ver never been in the ocean before."

Nick hesitated for a second. His eyes darted around. He seemed to be looking for a way out of it.

"What? We brought the snokeling stuff, so come on!!"

He shifted from one foot to the other. "Well," he began, "the undertow's really strong. Can't you feel it?"

"Yeah, a little, but so what? We're both good swimmers. And Erik's watching. I'm sure that he can help us is we need it." I replied as I picked up the flippers and snorkle masks.

"But I, um, I can't swim. Did I ever tell you that?" he said, trying to weasle out of it.

"Bull. I've seen you swim before. What's wrong? Chicken?" I replied, mocking him.

"Okay, fine, I'm scared of sharks, and I don't want to go out that deep," he admitted, looking at the ground, embarrased.

"Sharks? I highly doubt there are any sharks out here, but if you're going to be a baby about it, we won't go."

"Thank you," he said, truely greatful that we weren't going.

"I still think you're a wuss, though," I said as I splashed him.

"Oh yeah?"

"Yeah."

And with that, Nick took off after me. We ran down the length of the beach for a bit until I collapsed on the sand from exhasution.

"Now whatcha gonna do?" Nick asked as he stood over me, breathing hard.

"I'm gonna......" I said as I grabbed his ankle and pulled on it, making him loose his balance, yet again, and he fell on the sand. "That's what I'm gonna do."

"Oh yeah? Well, I'm gonna do this!" And he took a handful of sand and threw it at me.

"Oooh, you have bad aim. You hardly touched me!" "So? I didn't want to get sand if your eyes."

"Well, thanks for the concern," I said as I started playing with the sand, forming a mound, which was soon to be a sand castle.

"Too bad we don't have shovels and tin pales, huh? then we wcould make this thing really big," Nick said as he joined in to help.

"Yeah, but we'll do fine with out them."

So for an hour or so we worked on the caslte, building it higher and wider. It had little towers, doors, and a moat around it. We even found some old pieces of cloth and wire somewhere on the beach and mad flags to stick out of the towers.

"Pretty impressive. I've never really had the chance to build something like this, but mainly since I can't go out a lot," Nick replied as he took a step back from our creation, admiring it.

"Well, we don't even have beached near us, as you might remember, so the only time I got to build a sand castle was in the sand box," I replied as I stood next to Nick. I had to litterally look up to him because he was so tall, and I'm no where near his height.

"You know what? Before my mom and I flew over here, occasionally I would wonder if fame had gone to your head, but it doesn't seem to have swollen any. Not that I can tell, anyway. You're still the same ol' you," I said, looking at him. "Well, I try not to let it get to me. Besdies, I'm only as good as anyone else, it's just that I have this talent, and now I'm sharing it so that others can hear it."

"I wish I had that talent. I can't sing for beans," I replied, laughing.

"Oh, come on, I'm sure you don't sound as bad as you think."

"Yes I do, trust me. My cat leaves the room when I start singing something."

"Maybe he just doesn't like the music you play," Nick suggested, not quite helpfully.

"Oh, I don't think that's it!" I laughed.

"Well, let's hear you sing. I'll be the judge on how bad you are," Nick said as we started heading back to our origional location on the beach.

"Yeah, right, I'll embarrass myself and you'll laugh at me," I said.

"I promise I won't laugh. Cross my heart and hope to die," Nick said, looking honest enough.

"Oh, okay, you twisted my arm. But if you laugh at me, I'll have to kick you butt."

"I swear I won't laugh."

"Fine. Brace yourslef, this could get ugly." And with that, I started singing the Beatles song "Come Together," humming when I didn't know the words.

So I was off-key half of the time. Nick still shouldn't've laughed.

"You swore you wouldn't laugh!" I shouted, but I wasn't REALLY mad, just joking, mainly, but I still had to kick his butt, I owed him that much.

One problem: he's a lot bigger than me, and stronger, too.

We ended up wrestling, trying to pin eachother down. I wasn't going to win from the looks of things.

Nick pinned me on my back and sat on me, holdind my arms down so I couldn't hit him.

He stared at me for a moment, alsmot seeming to gaze into my eyes.
