Follow Your Heart

Brian watched her go. It was more painful than he ever imagined, but he felt he was doing the right thing. He stood paralyzed, afraid to even breathe because he might run after her.

"Brian, we have to go." Nick said quietly, tugging on his friend's arm gently.

Brian allowed himself to be ushered onto the bus, his pride fading as he let the tears finally slide down his cheeks. He wasted no time and went straight to a bunk to lay down.

"God, please let this of been the right thing. Show me, Lord, show me." He prayed softly, and drifted into a restless sleep. Dream after dream of her plagued his slumber.

"Brian, I'm sorry but I have to tell you something." She said to him, worry accentuating her amazing green eyes.

"What is it?" He replied, taking her hand and leading her to a park bench. She bowed her head slightly and a warm breeze rippled through her brunette curls.

"I love you." She told him simply, and his heart soared. He had waited too long to hear those words.

Brian woke sharply, remembering that incredible day when they finally were together, no longer best friends but bound by an unchanging love. Or so they thought.

He tried to sleep more, each time dreaming of a milestone in their relationship. He wanted to forget for a while, it was too hard, but his subconscious was ruthless.

"Look, it's not your fault, but with my career it's too hard to be together. We both need more." Brian said, trying to break it off as easily as he could.

"I'm willing to work on this, but if you honestly think that we can't then you have a lot to learn. I know you, I know your mind is made up and there's nothing I can say to change that, but don't forget us, don't forget me." She had said with much poise, the tears flowing freely.

"And then she walked away." Brian whispered to himself, crying some more.

"Brian?" Nick asked sleepily, pulling the current back a little.

"What is it, Nick?" Brian sighed, wiping his eyes.

"You're not sleeping well, I can hear you." Nick replied.

"I keep dreaming..." Brian trailed off, not wanting to explain. Nick picked up on that and gave him the best advice he could.

"Sometimes you need to pay attention to your dreams, they could be telling you more than you realize." Nick said, and left Brian alone.

A few hours later Brian was still awake, not trusting himself to sleep again. He thought about Nick's words, his dreams, and of course-her.

He did finally sleep and dream yet again. This time was different, though. This time it wasn't the past but rather the future.

His eyes flew open and he figured it out. He knew what he had to do. He jumped out of the bunk, waking Nick another time that night, and hurried to the front of the bus.

"Please, stop as soon as you can..." Nick heard Brian pleading with the driver.

"Brian, man, what are you doing?" He asked, the bus now stopped. He followed Brian out into the street of the rest stop.

"I have to go back, I made a huge mistake, I have to make it right." Brian replied, more determined than Nick had ever seen him.

"Okay, okay, go." He told Brian, almost stunned, and Brian took off to the nearest phone.

Early the next morning Brian made it back home. He eagerly leapt out of his rental car and up the steps of her house.

He banged on the door, hoping and praying that she would take him back. No answer. He continued knocking, but it was no use.

Brian slumped down on the top stair and noticed a piece of paper sticking out of her mailbox. He saw it was addressed to him so he opened it and began to read.

What he read was too much for him. She was gone. She had left on business, and would be moving shortly. Brian crumpled the note and didn't know what to do...

***

"Brian, honey, you wanted to talk to me?" She asked, waking Brian from the oddest rest of his life.

"You mean I, it was...a dream?" He whispered.

"What? Are you feeling all right sweetie?" She questioned, looking concerned.

"Yeah, I mean, I'm great!" He replied a little too enthusiastically.

"Well, what did you want to talk to me about?" She asked, not sure of his intentions.

"You know, it's not important. I was going to make the biggest mistake of my life but God showed me, and I'm going to follow my heart with you." Brian tried to explain.

"You're really not making much sense, but-" She tried to say but he cut her off with a kiss.

"Brian, it's time to go." Nick said, tugging at Brian's arm.

"I'll see you in a few weeks." Brian said, and she nodded, watching him leave.
