Chapter 4

Emilie awoke the next day to realize she had fallen asleep beside Nick on the couch in the room he shared with Brian. The TV was humming Christmas music and she glanced outside the window to see the snow had tampered off entirely. She glanced at Nick and couldn't help smiling. He looked like a precious baby boy as he slept peacefully, and she leaned over and kissed his cheek.
She saw him shift, and his eyes instantly popped open. She smiled at him, and he yawned, but a smile creased his lips soon after.
"Good morning," Emilie smiled softly, as she laid down beside him once more, and laid her head on his shoulder.
"Hi," Nick replied smiling. "Did you sleep well?"
"Yes, especially since I was in your arms," Emilie answered, and she felt sappy saying it, but that was how she really felt.
"Honey, you'll never know how much I really love you," Nick replied compassionately, and he pulled her close.
"Nick, everything is so perfect now," Emilie whispered back, as he kissed the tip of her forehead. "I hope we always stay together!"
"We will always be together," Nick answered, as they both sat up. "Em, do you realize, our one year anniversary was last month?"
"I know!" Emilie said. "I cried the whole day in bed. Billie couldn't even get me to go to class."
"Oh, well, so did I," Nick said softly. "We can always celebrate it now."
"That sounds nice Nick," Emilie told him, as her bracelet dangled on her arm. "I never took this off."
"Remember your teddy bear Honey?" Nick asked her, and she nodded. "Well, you forgot it on tour, and I have slept with it every night."
"Nick, I love you," Emilie whispered, and she reached forward and kissed him.
"You guys are so sappy!" Brian complained, as he sat up in the masterbed opposite the couch.
"Good morning B-Rok," Emilie told him, as she grinned. "Sorry, We didn't mean to wake you up!"
"No prob Em," Brian gave her goofy smile. "Now, can you get out, so we can get ready!"
"Thanks Brian!" Emilie told him, but there was a twinkle in her eyes. "I never knew you disliked me that much." She stood up, and pretended to stomp towards the door. Brian got a worried look in his eyes, and bounced off the bed. He met her halfway between the door, and gave her a big hug.
"I definitely don't hate you!" Brian reassured her.
"Bri, I'm just kidding," Emilie teased him, and a devilish smile came across his face. He glanced at Nick over the top of her head, and they both moved in, and began tickling her. She shrieked, and fell down on the floor, in a fit of laughter. "Guys! Stop!"
"Sorry can't," Nick told her, and she felt tears come to her eyes.
"Nick! Brian! Please?" Emilie pleaded with them, and they finally stopped. "Thanks. Don't ever do that again!"
"No prob!" Brian winked at her. "Now, really, get out!"
"I'm going, geez!" Emilie replied, as she walked into the hallway in her flannel pyjamas, and Nick kissed her on the lips, before she headed to her own room. She opened the door, and walked in. She quickly took out a pair of cargo pants, and a grey sweater set, and decided to wear that for the day. She heard the phone in her room ring and she picked it up.
"Emilie! Hey!" Billie's voice sang through the phone. "Are you still miserable?"
"No!" Emilie answered, as she fell back onto the bed. She heard a knock on the door, and took Billie to hold on. She opened it, and saw Nick. He handed her, her eyeglasses, and her purse, and gave her a kiss before he went back to his room.
"Who was that?" Billie wanted to know.
"Nick," Emilie answered. "He gave me my purse, my eyeglasses, and a kiss."
"Why are your purse, your eyeglasses, and a kiss in Nick's room?" Billie demanded, and Emilie had to laugh.
"I fell asleep in there," Emilie replied, and she had to laugh. "Don't sound so dramatic Billie."
"Omigod, did you?" Billie shrieked.
"No Billie! I will not until I'm married!" Emilie answered back.
"Then, why did you sleep in there?" Billie cried.
"Nick and I were watching a movie, cuddling on the couch, and I fell sleep beside him on the couch," Emilie explained, as she sighed dreamily.
"So, you two are back together?" Billie asked.
"Yes!" Emilie replied happily. "Oh Billie, I am so happy right now."
"Good," Billie thanked the Lord. "I was sick of your PMS and your miserableness."
"Billie!" Emilie cried. "That's mean."
"Em, never mind," Billie shook her head. "Anyway, I'm here in the dorm now, so please, please, please, come home soon!"
"Can I bring Nick?" she asked, and Billie laughed.
"Are you sure you want him to spend time with me?" Billie asked, and Emilie laughed.
"Billie, Nick doesn't care!" Emilie replied laughing. "I'd better go though because I have to get packed and leave this afternoon. I don't really know what Nick is doing."
"Where's Mandy Em?" Billie asked concerned. She remembered a few times when Emilie had tried calling Nick and Mandy had been rude.
"I have no idea," Emilie offered, trying to avoid the subject all together. "Billie, see you tonight!"
"Okay!" Billie agreed, and they said goodbye. Emilie headed into the shower, changed quickly, and dried her hair, fixed her make-up, and headed out the motel room. She knocked on Nick's and Brian's door, and heard some people laughing in the room. She opened the door to reveal LeighAnne and Mandy in there, as they drank some coffee that they had obviously brought up to Nick and Brian.
"Good morning!" Emilie smiled, as Mandy gave her a sterile Look.
"I thought you were leaving today," Mandy told her.
"I am," Emilie replied, ignoring Mandy's cattiness. "Hi LeighAnne. How are you?"
"Pretty good Em," she smiled. "Want some coffee?"
"Sure, sounds great," Emilie responded with a smile. She was glad LeighAnne was being nice.
"So, what time does our flight leave?" Nick asked her, as he wrapped his arms around her.
"Are you coming with me to Ottawa?" Emilie asked him.
"If you want me to," Nick promised. "I am scheduled to fly into LA this Wednesday, so my parents won't mind if I go down to spend a few days with you."
"Nick, I thought you were going back to Florida!" Mandy told him.
"I changed my mind," Nick shrugged his shoulders. "How about it Em?"
"Maybe you shouldn't come," Emilie replied. "I mean, if you have somewhere else to go."
"He does!" Mandy snapped. "He's coming to Florida with the guys and I."
"I'm leaving," Emilie told them, and she headed out the door. She couldn't take Mandy anymore. This girl was destined to make her life miserable, and she wasn't going to stand there and take it.
"Em, sorry about that," Nick apologized, as he came outside the door. "So, do you want me to come to Ottawa with you?"
"Yes, but I mean-," Emilie hesitated. "Are you really going to stay in the dorm with Billie and I?"
"I could get a motel room!" Nick offered, as he saw AJ appear with Amanda. "Bone, what are you doing the next few days?"
"Nothing," AJ replied. "Why? Hey Em."
"Good morning," Emilie smiled back.
"Want to come to Ottawa with Emilie and I?" Nick suggested, and there was a pleading Look in his eyes.
"Amanda?" AJ asked her, and she nodded.
"Go! Have fun!" Amanda told him. "I have to go back to Orlando anyway. I got to put in some studio time to see about cutting my debut single."
"Amanda, really? I'm so happy for you!" Emilie smiled, and she gave her a hug. "I know you'll be as successful as Britney."
"Thanks Em," Amanda grinned.
"Okay, let's do that," Nick told them. "AJ and I will fly back with you, and hook up in a motel. We'll spend some time down there."
"Sounds awesome," AJ smiled. "I can check all the hot Ottawa women."
"AJ!" Amanda warned him, but there was a twinkle in her eyes. Nick headed back into Emilie's room to make some quick reservations at an Ottawa motel and to book some airplane reservations, as Emilie followed AJ and Amanda back into Brian's and Nick's room where Brian, LeighAnne, and Mandy were watching some tv.
"Oh gawd, she's back," Mandy said loudly, as Emilie came in. "Where's Nicky?"
"His name is Nick," Emilie snapped back. "Quit being rude Mandy. I haven't done anything to you."
"You are such a bitch," Mandy told her, and she turned away. AJ shook his head at Mandy, and shrugged his shoulders at Emilie. She went and sat down on Nick's bed, and watched as the snow came down outside. She felt a sudden urge to resolve things with Mandy, and she called her.
"Mandy! Can we talk?" Emilie offered a smile.
"No!" Mandy snapped back. "What is there to talk about? You have Nick, I lost my boyfriend, and everything is just peachy keen for you."
"Mandy, I didn't force Nick to come back to me," Emilie pointed out.
"Whatever," Mandy snapped back, but she saw the friendliness in Emilie's eyes. "Fine, let's go talk."
"Thanks," Emilie said, and she followed Mandy out the hall....

********************************

Nick hung up with the representative from American Airlines and glanced around Emilie's motel room with a smile. Everything reminded him of her. Her flannel pyjamas were in a mess on the floor, and she had his white teddybear he had given her, on the bed. Her make-up in soft pinks and lavenders was coursed across the nighttable, and there was an empty glass of water perched on the TV shelf. He saw MTV muted on the TV, and he decided to go back into Brian's room. He stood up though, and took the teddybear, and hugged it close to himself. It somehow smelt like Emilie, and he grinned putting it down again. He heard two female voices in the hallway, and cringed as he realized it was Emilie and Mandy speaking. He didn't know whether to barge in, or wait. He decided to wait, and he put his ear against the door, and listened.
"Emilie, it hurt me so bad," Mandy said honestly. "I was really falling in love with him."
"I can understand," Emilie agreed. "The moment I saw Nick, I instantly like him. He's the sweetest guy I've ever met."
"He is stubborn though!" Mandy giggled.
"Yeah, but I love him just the way he is," Emilie answered. "I'm really sorry Mandy. I missed Nick so much for the last month, but I really was willing to sacrifice my feelings for you and him."
"Nick and you should be together," Mandy put in. "Nick missed you so much too. I used to catch him crying during the middle of the afternoon, clutching a teddybear. He listened to so many depressing love songs, especially the one by Edwin Mccain."
"That's our song," Emilie told her. "I missed him too."
"There are many guys out there for me," Mandy told her sighing. "Nick and I weren't meant to be."
"Mandy, you're beautiful," Emilie told her. "You can get any guy."
"So can you!" Mandy replied. "You're gorgeous Em."
"Yeah right," Emilie replied softly. "I sometimes wonder why Nick loves me. I am not pretty."
"Em, you only you knew how much Nick loves you," Mandy shook her head. "What are you? A size 10? So?"
"I'm a size 16," Emilie told her. "I feel so ugly sometimes, but I try to hide my self-consciousness."
"Well, I'm a size 4, and I hate being skinny," Mandy told her. "As you can see, clothes hang off me. I would rather be curvy."
"Mandy, you are perfect!" Emilie cried. "I would love to be your size."
"Em, geez, stop putting yourself down!" Mandy told her, and Nick decided to enter into the hallway. He hated it when Emilie got depressed about herself.
"I can't," Emilie replied honestly, and she felt arms encircle from behind her. She turned to see Nick, and he kissed her forehead.
"You can Em," Nick told her. "Em, you are beautiful. I never want to hear you say you aren't."
"Nick, you know it's true," Emilie whispered, as tears came down her face. "I hate myself. I honestly do."
"Gawd Em," Nick whispered to her. "Please don't say those things."
Emilie shook her head, as she realized Mandy had gone back into Brian's room. "I wish there was a way I could feel better about myself," Emilie told him.
"When's the last time you those girly things?" Nick asked her.
"What girly things?" Emilie asked, an amused smile coming across her smile.
"You know, a haircut and stuff like that," Nick asked her.
"Over six months ago," Emilie told him. "I look kind of bad, don't I?"
"No, you look fine, but maybe that will make you feel better," Nick suggested, as he let go of her. "We have time before your flight leaves. We don't leave until six."
"Oh, well, okay," Emilie said uncertainly. "You have to come with me though."
"I promise," Nick told her, and he took her hand, and they headed into Brian's room. They noticed Mandy, Amanda, and AJ had left, and Brian and LeighAnne were packing in his room. "Are you leaving soon?"
"Yes," LeighAnne replied. "We're leaving at two."
"This sucks," Emilie told them. "I never really got to spend much time with you."
"I know," Brian replied. "But, you'll have catch some of our Canadian shows."
"Sure!" Emilie replied, trying to sound happy. They turned to see AJ coming back into the room.
"Okay, Amanda's gone," he said. "She headed back to Florida with Mandy in a limo to the airport."
"I never said goodbye," Emilie sighed, as she saw Brian lift up his suitcase. "Bye Brian. Bye LeighAnne. I'm going to miss you so much!"
"Bye Em," LeighAnne smiled, and they gave each other a hug. "Bye Bone. Bye Nick."
"See ya Em," Brian gave her a hug too. "Please e-mail me."
"I will, I promise," Emilie told him, as tears came to her eyes. "Bye."
The guys exchanged hugs, and they were both gone.
"Just the three of us," AJ sang, as they walked out of the room again. "Nick tells me we are taking you for a makeover."
"No," Emilie moaned, as AJ put an arm around her.
"You are perfect just the way you are, but this is going to be fun," AJ winked, as they stopped at her room so she could grab her purse.
"I hope so," Emilie complained, and she followed them downstairs to the Plaza's spa. They arrived, and the workers were more then happy to help Emilie right away. Nick kissed her goodbye, and AJ and him headed off to get some lunch. She almost started protesting, but she followed the hairdresser to the sink. They washed her long hair, and the hairdresser couldn't believe her hair was almost halfway down her back. She climbed up on the chair, and the hairdresser named Andressa.
"Hello," she smiled, as she started combing her hair. "How are you today?"
"I'm good thanks," Emilie offered a brave smile. "How are you?"
"Wonderful," Andressa replied. "Except this weather really stinks."
"I love the snow," Emilie replied. "Andressa, what should I get done?"
"Whatever you want hun," Andressa told her. "Are you a College student?"
"Yes," Emilie replied. "I go to Carleton University in Ottawa."
"Wow, what are you doing in the Big Apple?" Andressa wanted to know.
"I'm visiting my boyfriend," Emilie replied bravely.
"Oh," Andressa nodded. "That's nice. So, what are we going to do?"
"I don't know," Emilie replied hopelessly. "My hair is so dull."
"You have a beautiful color," Andressa complimented her. "Do you want to keep it long?"
"What do you think?" Emilie asked confused.
"I think you should go short," Andressa told her. "You have the perfect shape face, and it would really bring out your eyes."
"Really, really short?" Emilie asked.
"No," Andressa laughed. "Relax. Short, but long enough it doesn't look short."
"Oh okay," Emilie agreed, and Andressa went to work. About half-an-hour later, and she spun her around, and Emilie saw her new haircut. Her hair was now lip length, and she now had some wispy bangs. She stared for a while, and realized it was pretty nice.
"Do you like it?" Andressa wanted to know, and Emilie nodded.
"Thanks!" Emilie smiled, and she gave her a big tip. She headed out of the salon, just after she paid for her haircut, and agreed to give her hair to a special organization called Locks For Love. She saw Nick and AJ sitting in the restaurant, and there was about six fans staring at them. Emilie walked in, and was given a hassle about going to see them. Nick noticed her right away, and his eyes lit up.
"Em, you look gorgeous!" he told her, and he wrapped his arms her. "I love it."
"Thanks," Emilie replied, as she felt camera flashes around her. She turned to see the fans watching in curiosity.
"Are you guys back together?" one of the younger ones asked them.
"Yes," Emilie replied smiling.
"Oh!" she nodded, and grinned. "I like your hair Emilie."
"Thanks," Emilie grinned, as she walked over to them. She signed some autographs, and gave them all hugs.
"I'm glad Nick and you are back together," one told her. "Nobody liked Sheri or Mandy."
"Sheri and Mandy are really nice people," Emilie told the fans. "So, how are you all?" Nick couldn't believe she was being so kind about the two people who almost ruined them.
"Pretty good!" the same girl responded. "My name is Vanessa."
"It's nice to meet you," Emilie winked at her, as she saw her looking at AJ.
"Is AJ your favourite?"
"Yes," she whispered, as love shone through her eyes.
"Want to meet him?" Emilie asked, and Vanessa nodded, as tears came to her eyes. "Hey Bone."
"What's up?" AJ asked, standing up, and walking over to her.
"AJ, this is Vanessa," Emilie introduced them, as she smiled at Nick as he talked to the other fans.
"Nice to meet you Vanessa," AJ winked at her, and gave her a hug.
Emilie went to the table, and sat down in the empty chair beside Nick's. She took a sip of the Diet Coke they had ordered for her, and glanced over the menu.
The waitress came and took her order, as Nick and AJ sat back down.
"Sorry," Nick apologized.
"Don't apologize," Emilie told him. "I love the fans. I was one once myself."
"Aren't you one now?" AJ grinned, and she smiled.
"You guys know how much I love you," Emilie responded, as she sipped her drink again. "The fans are really cool. I enjoy meeting them and it doesn't bother me at all when you go meet them. I think it's great."
"I'm glad you understand," Nick told her, and she smiled again. "So, do you really like your hair?"
"I love it," Emilie replied, touching out of the ends. "It's so different, but I think it'll be easier to take care of."
"I think I need a change," AJ told them, as he took off his fisher's hat.
"AJ, you always need a change," Nick teased him, and AJ laughed. "Em, you would not believe how many times he's dyed his hair in the last month."
"That's okay," Emilie reassured them. "AJ, you look great in any hair colour."
"Thanks hun," AJ winked at her, as his cell phone rang. "Excuse me. Hey Amanda." He stood up and walked into the lobby with his phone.
"Em, thanks," Nick told her, and she looked at him with surprise. "Thanks for being so understanding with the fans."
"Nick, I don't mind at all," Emilie replied. "I mean that with all my heart."
"I know," Nick nodded, as he took her hand. "Em, please promise me will be together forever."
"I promise Nick," Emilie replied, as tears came to her eyes.
"Emilie! Nick!" yelled someone, and they turned to see a new batch of fans standing there. "Can I have an autograph?"
"Sure!" Nick replied, as he stood up. "What's your name?"
"Cassandra," she answered with a smile, glancing at Emilie. "Hi Emilie. Can I have one too?"
"Of course you can!" Emilie smiled, as Nick handed her the paper and pen. "How are you today?"
"Just awesome," Cassandra replied. "I have to go back to Seattle though. I'd better go. Bye! Thanks!" Nick and Emilie continued signing autographs, as AJ came over and signed some as well. They realized their lunch had arrived, so they excused themselves, and went to eat.
"How's Amanda?" Emilie asked AJ, as she took as sip of her pop.
"Miserable," AJ replied. "We already miss each other."
"AJ, you could have gone down to Florida with her," Emilie reminded, feeling bad.
"To be honest Em, I didn't want to stuck on the plane with Mandy," AJ replied. "She drives me nuts."
"AJ, you guys should have said something to me," Nick told him.
"Howie and I figured if Emilie came down, you would come to your senses," AJ replied. "Em, we wanted to see you too."
"Sure you did," Emilie winked at him, and AJ winked back.
"Oh," Nick nodded, but there was a puzzled Look across his face. "Why didn't you like her?"
"Because she was pushy and was using you," AJ replied. "Em would never do that. She always allowed you to be who you wanted and really loved you. I don't know about Mandy."
"That's why I love her," Nick replied, and he smiled at Emilie. "Yeah, I guess I was blind. Oh well. It's over now."
"Guys, I have something to say," Emilie told them. "I am so happy to be here. For a while there, I figured we would never be close again, and it broke my heart."
"Emilie, how many times do we have to tell you?" AJ asked her. "We love you all a lot. You are like a little sister to us all."
"I love you all too," Emilie replied, as tears came to her eyes. "I am so emotional now. I don't know why."
"It's the holidays," Nick grinned. "That's not be sappy anymore, okay?"
"Sure!" Emilie winked, as she turned to see someone writing down everything they said. "Hey!!"
"What?" the reporter snapped.
"What are you doing?" Emilie asked him. "This is private business."
"Not anymore," he laughed in her face, and began walking away. Emilie followed him, and stood in front of him.
"Sir, that's none of your business," Emilie snapped. "Give me your notes now."
"Yeah right," he laughed harshly. "I can't wait to the world hears about everything you just said."
"That's unfair!" Emilie cried. "People like you exploit innocent people every day."
"Whatever," he shrugged his shoulders. "I need to make a living too."
"Why are you making a living off of making someone else's pain?" Emilie wanted to know.
"Because the dollar sign shines big," he replied. "Now, if you'll excuse me."
"No, I will not excuse you," Emilie told him. "It's unfair that you are going to exploit my boyfriend and my friends."
"That's so touching, but I really have to go," he responded, as he noticed people were watching them, and he became nervous.
"Sir, give me the lies you have written," Emilie urged him. "Don't do this. Backstreet Boys never did anything to you."
"I can't," he whispered. "I'll be fired."
"So?" Emilie replied. "You'd still have good morals."
"Is anything wrong Miss?" a security official asked.
"Maybe not," she told him. "Sir?"
"Fine!" he told her, and he gave her his notes and a cassette tape. The security official kicked out the reporter and Emilie ripped up the paper, and threw it in the trash. She then got a pair of scissors and cut up the tape. She went to the washroom quickly, and then headed back to the table.
"What was that all about?" Nick asked, as she sat down.
"Nothing really," Emilie shrugged her shoulders, as she took a bite of her sandwich. "Just some tabloid reporter I think."
"Oh great," AJ sighed, as he sat back in his chair. "He's probably going to write all this bull crap."
"I wouldn't be too sure about that," Emilie responded. "Not if he has no notes or tape to use as reference."
"Only if we had that," Nick commented, as he sipped his root beer.
"It's in that garbage over there," Emilie pointed. "Go take a look."
"What?" AJ asked, surprised. "How did it get there?"
"I threw it out," Emilie shrugged her shoulders, as the waitress gave her the check, and she gave her credit card in return.
"Wait a minute, you got a tabloid reporter to throw out his notes and tapes?" Nick asked surprised as well.
"Sure did," Emilie winked at him, as she signed the receipt, and they all stood up. "My charm works on everyone."
"It sure worked on me," Nick whispered into her ear, as he wrapped an arm around her. "Thanks for lunch."
"Yeah, thanks Em," AJ told her. "You're awesome."
"No prob," Emilie grinned, as they met some more fans outside of the restaurant. They signed more autographs, and ended up going to get ready to fly out to Ottawa...
