American warning to Indonesian President on terrorism
A senior American official has warned Indonesia's President that terrorism is a cancer
and the fight against it is an ongoing one.
US Trade Representative Robert Zoellick made the remarks during a meeting with
President Megawati Sukarnoputri in Jakarta in which he thanked her for Indonesia's
stance against terrorism following the September 11 attacks on the United States.
Relations between Jakarta and Washington have been strained because senior US
officials named Indonesia a potential hiding place for terrorists, including members of
Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda network.
Jakarta has also come under criticism for its perceived delays in reining in militant
Islamic groups and its failure to detain militant leaders accused by Singapore and
Malaysia of links to alleged terror plots.
Mr Zoellick, Washington's top trade negotiator, managed to praise and thank
President Megawatti for her economic reform efforts and support for the war against
terrorism.
