INDONESIA: Doubts over value of media blackout in Malukus
Indonesia has imposed a media blackout and curfew over the Maluku Islands fearing
the planned celebration of a separatist anniversary this week could re-ignite the
conflicts which have wracked the region for three years. A total media ban has been
imposed on international and local media coverage of this Thursday's anniversary of
the little known South Maluku Republic secessionist movement. Religious and civil
leaders say the authorities have over-reacted in imposing a curfew and media ban.
