12 killed in pre-dawn raids on two villages south of Ambon
The death toll from the latest sectarian violence around the city of Ambon in
Indonesia's troubled Moluccas region has been increased to 12.
Witnesses say a Muslim mob raided two Christian villages south of Ambon, in a
pre-dawn attack, setting houses and a church alight.
Doctors at two hospitals report treating 10 injured villagers but say a poor transport
link is making it difficult for those hurt in the raids to get help.
A journalist in one of the villages which was attacked said the mob was armed with
home-made bombs.
The raids are a further setback for hopes of a peace deal brokered between Muslims
and Christians in February.
