At least 12 people killed on Indonesian island of Ambon
At least 12 people have been killed in renewed violence on the eastern Indonesian
island of Ambon.
Mark Bowling reports, pre-dawn attacks on two Christian villages were carried out by
an unidentified gang.
The victims were from the villages of Soiya and Ahoro on the outskirts of Ambon city.
As well as more than a dozen people killed in the attack, one hospital in Ambon
reported taking in many injured. Police have not yet identified who carried out the
killings but it appears to be the latest incident in a sectarian conflict which has
claimed five thousand lives in the last four years. The latest violence threatens to
disrupt a two month old peace pact between Christian and Muslim communities. The
attack also follows the 52nd anniversary of the seperatist South Muluku Republic
movement on Thursday. The movement has only small backing, but it's seen by
Muslim groups as a predominantly Christian group
