Six members of Indonesia's special forces suspected of Eluay
murder
In Indonesia a high level investigation team says six members of the army's special
forces are suspected of murdering an independence leader in the easternmost
province of Papua last year.
Mark Bowling reports, the team's report has been handed to president Megawati
Sukarnoputri, but the names of those accused have not been made public.
The names of the six soldiers are expected to be released later this week. The
investigating team lead by a former police chief will only say that members of the
special forces, known as Kopassus, three low ranking officers and three middle
ranking officers are suspected of involvement in the murder of Papua's
pro-independence leader, Theys Eluay. Eluay was found dead last November after
being kidnapped on his way home from a dinner at a Kopassus compound. Three of
the soldiers accused are being held in Jakarta and have already been questioned.
Military police say that as well as charges of murder the three commissioned officers
would also be accused of insubordination because there had never been an order
from their superiors to kill Theys Eluay.
