Tension still grips Ambon as four killed in fresh melee
AMBON, Maluku (JP): At least four people were killed and dozens more injured after a
huge explosion shook downtown Ambon on Wednesday afternoon.
The Maluku Governor's office on Jl. Pattimura was also completely gutted after a
non-stop, four-hour fire which began at 12 p.m. local time.
The provincial office of National Development Board Bappeda also sustained serious
damage in a blaze which followed the bombing.
In all, at least 50 people were injured.
The people killed were identified as Julius Tomasoa, Hengki Tuhumuri, and Roni
Kehuae, along with another unidentified male.
A number of Maluku figures and local journalists were trapped in the burning building
during the incident before they were able to be evacuated from the scene.
"This building is a symbol of governance. Why did it have to burn?" Des Alwi, a senior
Maluku figure, asked in despair.
All of the files in the Governor's office were lost in the fire. Tension still gripped the city
as of Wednesday night.
