Soldier shot in Ambon after separatist flag-flying incident
JAKARTA (JP): A military member of the 741th Battalion on Saturday afternoon was
shot in the leg when security forces tried to secure the Trikora Monument area in
Ambon, the capital of restive Maluku province, a report said.
The injured soldier was rushed to Dr. Latumeten Hospital for immediate treatment.
It is believed that the soldier was shot by a sniper following a dispute triggered by the
flying of a South Maluku Republic (RMS) separatist flag, which was attached to a
balloon earlier on Saturday, Antara reported.
Tension has risen in Ambon in the past few days following a flag-hoisting ceremony
by supporters of the now defunct RMS separatist movement.
