Search For Weapons in Ambon
1 May 2002 18:58:49 WIB
TEMPO Interaktif, Ambon, South Maluku::Security forces will search all homes in
four districts of Ambon where it is suspected that explosive materials and weapons
are hidden.
Pattimura Military Chief Brig. Gen. Mustopo, Ambon Military Chief Col. AH Lubis and
Maluku governor Saleh Latuconsina made this announcement to reporters following a
two-hour evaluation meeting held at the governor’s residence in Ambon on
Wednesday (1/5).
In the meeting, the governor, as the head of the state of civil emergency authorities in
Maluku, gave the order for the weapons search in Ambon.
Security forces will also stop people from wearing military uniforms in public places
and take stern action against those who continue to do so.
These measures are being conducted in anticipation of another conflict that could
take place following the attack on Soya village on Sunday (28/4) when people were
killed and houses were burnt down.
Many persuasive measures have already been conducted by the authorities as
regards the handing over of weapons by the general public, bureaucrats and
politicians.
However, not all people had voluntarily handed over their weapons by the agreed
deadline of April 30. (Friets Kerlely)
