Zlime (Cornstarch Slime)

From the kitchen of:  ZOOM (www.pbskids.org)

one pound box of cornstarch

1 1/2 cups water

bowl

Food coloring for color * to make light green slime, add green and yellow.

Mix all of the cornstarch and the water together in a bowl. If the mixture is really thick, add some more water. The mixture should be slightly runny.  Now add a few drops of food coloring, if desired, and stir well.   Run your fingers through the Zlime.

Here's what's cool about Zlime. When you poke the Zlime quickly, putting pressure on it, the Zlime particles lock together and it acts like a solid. But when you poke at it slowly, this doesn't happen and the Zlime still acts like a liquid.

You really need to feel the Zlime run through your fingers to understand how it changes. Try it out.

Playdough

From the kitchen of:  About.com Recipes for Kids

My mom used to make this dough for us kids when we were little.

1 cup flour

1 cup water

½ cup salt

2 tbsp cream of tartar

1 tbsp oil

Stir together ingredients in medium sauce pan.  Heat and stir constantly until dough forms solid mass.  Remove from heat, turn out on a plate, cover with damp cloth until cool.  When cool you may separate dough and add food coloring.  Knead food coloring into dough.  Store play dough in plastic bag, in refrigerator.  *My mom always added a dash of cinnamon to dough to make it smell good.
