START CONTROL POSITIONS AND DUTIES


ATC TIMER

Notes the time that each co-driver turns in the timecard at the red clock sign.

Writes on a timing log the car number and the exact time, to the minute, that the rally car enters the control. Calls out the hour and minute to the timecard writer

Adds three minutes to the arrival time, writes this on the timing log, and calls it out as Ideal Start Time to the timecard writer.

If necessary, adds up to five additional minutes ONLY to allow the crew to change a flat tire with equipment on board the car.

TIMECARD WRITER

Takes timecard booklet from co-driver, fills in arrival time on TOP timecard,initials in the ATC box at bottom right.

Turns to next timecard, enters Ideal Start Time in left-hand start box. Returns timecard to co-driver.

STARTER

Takes timecard booklet from co-driver to verify start time. Enters Actual Start Time in right side Actual Start Time box. Initials timecard in SSS box at bottom left.

Checks to see that safety harnesses are in place and that helmets are on and windows rolled up or nets up. The car doesn’t leave until they are!

Returns timecard and, if necessary, instructs co-driver to roll up window.

Places flag across windshield, (don’t touch it) on co-driver side.

Gives a mark at 30 seconds, 15 seconds, and counts the car down backwards from 5 seconds, starting at 55 seconds on the start clock. On zero, yells “MARK” and lifts start flag simultaneously.

JUDGE OF FACT

Keeps log of Start Times and car numbers.

Observes start of car. If it leaves early, even by one second, notes it in the log.

Also checks to see that safety harnesses and helmets are in place.
