James, age 15, remained in England when his mother and sisters came to Aust. He arrived 14 years later in 1868, with his wife Esther, sponsored by his mother, Sarah KELLETT. James and Esther had no children, and on 13.9.1876, 8 years after their arrival, Esther died suddenly of a heart condition. She is buried in Inverell. By the 1880s James was in the Gilgai/Tingha area. James' 2nd wife Mary CALTHORPE, was widow of Christopher CALTHORPE, who was well known in the district. Mary was 7 or 8 years older than James, and owned tin mines in the Tingha area. James worked in the mines, and on Tuesday 20.11.1894 James was working in a mine at HILLSIDE, Gilgai. He was timbering up a shaft when a mass of earth fell into the shaft and smothered him. An inquest 23.11.1894 found the cause of his death as accidental. After James died, Mary married Edward Smith PERCY, who was previously married to James' sister Jane, who had died in 1888.
