a. ABBREVIATIONS USED b born, bp (or chr.) baptised, bur buried, d died, m married 0 = Edward WITHERS (bp 29.11.1788 Lambourn-14.1.1870 Newbury), farmer at Bayley Hill Farm, Baydon. (He has ID 384281 at http://www.oocities.org/keeto111/withers/withersberks.html sp- spouse (usually used in front of the name of the spouse marrying into the family) b. DATES I use the English convention with month after day. So 3.4.1770 is 3rd April, not March 4. c. NUMBERING SYSTEMS USED (i) The number at the start of the line indicates the order of descent from the initial couple 0 7--Edward WITHERS (bp 29.11.1788 Lambourn-14.1.1870 Newbury) m1 30.11.1812 Uffington sp-Sarah THATCHER (27.3.1794 Uffington-30.6.1823 Baydon) Their children are 1 9--..., 2 9--, ... The children of say 2 are 21 10--..., 22 10--..., 23 10--,... and so on. For ease of reading a blank is inserted after the first 4 ID digits. If a family has more than 9 children the 10th child is denoted by ...(10) or by ...a, the 11th child by ...(11) or by ...b, and so on. (ii) The numbers before the name for (example 8--or 9--or 10--) give the generation number from the initial couple on the English WITHERS tree in Bishops Cannings, Wiltshire, "0 Thomas WITHERS (c1545-22.4.1624)" and "sp-Joane NASH (bur 1631)" counting them as generation 0. d. Possibly related to Sarah b 1810 to James & Sarah THATCHER in East Garston, ancestor of Joan CARPENTER jlc12"att"axe.humboldt.edu 1 8--Edward WITHERS (b 29.7.1813-14.10.1813 Baydon,Wiltshire) 2 8--Jason WITHERS (17.1.1815 Baydon,Wiltshire; bp?18.6.1815 -21.1.1881 Ullina Station, Chiltern, Victoria, Australia) According to Jason PALMER (384285223) he went to Australia on his own & decided his brothers should join him. They brought workers and stock. After getting married, arrived 30.9.1841 at Port Phillip as Intermediate Passengers on the Himalaya. (Sarah Ann was b 22.1.1841 at sea.) He first took up land at Strathbogie. Squatted on 75,000 acres of grazing land in the Black Dog Creek valley, Chiltern, Victoria. (The Aboriginal name for Black Dog Creek is Doma Mungi.) Owned the Ullina Run (1846-1937), near Chiltern & Wangaratta, now owned by JA HOLLOWAY. Purchased El Dorado Station by 1852, owned in 1840 by Capt Wm Fury BAKER RN. First leased Euroa (1841?-6) N of Strathbogie past Polly MCUINN's waterhole to Bailey Hill Farm c 120,000 acres? 1840-6. Withers Creek runs into Seven Creeks from hills on left. (Coincidentally there is also a Mt Bailey & Bailey Park in the region.) Owned Bailey Hill Station between Euroa & Merton. Bred race horses. Died after his horse ran into a clothesline. Michelle DEMPSEY notes that the book "The two lives of Joseph DOCKER" by J.M. MCMILLAN, Spectrum Publications 1994, ISBN 0 86786 340 4 (paperback) `mentions Jason WITHERS and Ullina p225, and it makes a great read on the lifestyles and problems new settlers in this area had.' `It gives the history of Joseph DOCKER who owned Bontharambo Plains Station of which Ullina was adjacent to. The whole book is great as it sets the scene for that period of time.' On p226 is a map by RWP ASHLEY of Jason's run Ullina on the Black Dog Creek and the Old Sydney Road with surrounding runs c1849. P.164: "At that time huge trees stood all over the country ... Often in old books and journals someone will mention an old tree whose trunk is perhaps 22 yards in circumference. George [DOCKER} was only a little boy when he first came to the Ovens but he noticed the ... immense trees that grew near the river.. A .. botanist said that even in 1857 when he arrived in Victoria he could walk .. among the massive trunks of the towering gums trees that grew in the watersheds. Some of these trees were over 300 feet high... With the abundant water the country side was alive with birds and animals... mussels, shrimps, eel-like fish, cod and lobster.. reptiles, tortoises, snakes, water rats and platypus.. yellow-legged bellbirds.. swans, ducks and cormorants.. purple backed kingfishers, white hawks & crimson rosellas. Cranes, slate blue with creamy necks, and little blue-black and white magpielarks. Sometimes huge flocks of the sulphur crested cockatoo swept in to forage and othes like the wattle birds or parakeets flocked in too. .. quail, tawny frogmouth... white necked heron, the red crested cockatoos, bronze winged pigeons, flycatchers, honey eaters, green parrots and the beautiful cinnamon crane... there were many [koala] bears in the trees,... flying squirrels... grey-brown possoms.. yellow-bellied native cats... Out on the plains emus and kangaroos stood tall, while small animals like the bandicoot and the pretty little silver-grey rabbit-rat hunted among the tussocks. High overhead a large eagle would pass by. Just as the seasons changed, so came the cycles of droughts and floods and fires... all the birds mentioned by Charles HOBSON in 1839 can still be seen around Bontharambo today ... It was in May 1840 that the troubles really began between the Aboriginals and the white settlers along the Ovens river..." P.175: "DOCKER 1st began to employ Aboriginal shepherds in 1840... Some time later he was able to engage an Aboriginal overseer Mole-le-min-ner or Joe as he was known who came well recommended by his previous employers as shown by the crescent shaped metal plates he wore round his neck..." P.225:"The 2nd man to contest DOCKER's claim was Jason WITHERS who had taken over the run Ullina on the NE of Bontharambo from Benjamin BARBER in 1846. The 3rd was James GULLIFER [photo p229 - his son married 2a3 in 1904] who had overlanded with DOCKER as a shepherd. In June 1845 together with 2 other men Edward GRAY and ?WEST he had taken up 14,000 acres of land N of B between Ullina and Boorhaman which became known as Lilliput. Early in the partnership WEST left and GRAY and GULLIFER continued to hold the run until 1848 when GULLIFER took over the licence... As BOULD and GULLIFER and WITHERS all ran some cattle pasture was an important issue... an enquiry presided over by a specially appointed commissioner Major FIREBRACE began early in 1850... After the boundary descriptions of runs were published in the Port Phillip Gazette in 1848 Jason WITHERS had taken out a caveat against DOCKER. DOCKER had immediately countered with a caveat against Jason WITHERS. The issue was over the head of the Rocky Water Holes Creek area where there were some minor springs, and the mail station of EB GREEN the mail contractor... After it was all over and the WITHERS and GULLIFERS and BOULDS were all on the usual neighbourly terms again, their joint cartage arrangements carried out as usual and Stanley [DOCKER] invited to be godfather to Jason WITHERS' new son [25], everything seemed to be back to normal in the Ovens area after all the upset. It was not to be long before the squatters had other problems to take their minds off the in-fighting over boundaries... gold ... When gold was discovered in California in 1849 hundreds of men left Australia to search in the American fields. Then 2 years later when the strikes here were announced they returned home, experienced miners by now. They were soon joined by growing thousands of men who threw down their jobs all over the world at the news that gold was found at Bathurst. The NSW strike was soon followed by discoveries of gold fields in Victoria. In 1851 in quick succession came: Anderson's Creek, Clunes, Buninyoung, Ballarat, Castlemaine and Bendigo. As the news spread, ships bringing in men crowded the docks and the rush emptied the towns, stripped many stations of their shepherds and stockmen, and filled the roads with men riding, walking, driving or pushing wheelbarrows. In Melbourne the streets were quiet and many businesses were at a standstill.... The local tribes still gathered for coroborees nearby ... When the rains came it was as though they would never stop... Then suddenly came more news of gold. This time a strike masterminded by Jemmy MELDRUM next door to Bontharambo. During the years the Jemmy had worked as a shepherd for David REID he had been stationed at the beautiful Spring Creek set among the May Day hills. Jemmy had always been certain that gold could be found there. From time to time he organised small parties of men to search for it and at last in Feb. 1852 he was proved right when the men from a search party returned from Spring Creek with a pint pot filled with pure gold. Within the years several more finds were made, at Pennyweight Flat, and Reid's Creek 3 miles downstream, and by the end of 1852 it was estimated that 8000 diggers were camped at Spring and Reid's Creek. Within a short time the Ovens Goldfields became noted for the richness of their yield. But as well, they became notorious for strong concentration of criminals among the diggers. Fights were routine, and 15 murders were reported there within the 1st 6 months of operation... In 1852 8 tons of Australian gold had been shipped off to England... canvas providing the cheapest housing of all, it was often resorted to... By now the Ovens Goldfields were in full swing and the local squatters found that there was a steady demand for vegetables and fruit, oats, wheat, maize and meat on the hoof..." [DOCKER's sons] "took on the task of delivering the stock to the goldfields butcher. Many years later George described the work of droving cattle and sheep across to Beechworth and returning in the dead of night through the bush to avoid bushrangers..." Obituary: "Howlong lost one of its most natable citizens ... He was descended from one of the earliest settlers in the district, John Garde DREW who, when it was decided to establish a Post Office in Howlong, was already the owner of a General Store. He applied for the position & in 1861 was appointed Howlong's first Postmaster at a salary of 12 pounds a year. He remained in the job for 10 years & in the meantime his salary increased to 15 pounds. His son Garde later established a butchery in the town, which on his death was taken over by Harry ... After am education at the local Public School & Albury Grammar, he joined his father in running the shop. His main job in those days was delivering meat to the neighbouring farmers on both sides of the river & was a well known figure in the 30s driving a horse-drawn cart, later upgraded to a motor vehicle. In the summer he was equipped with a large branch from a gum tree to keep the flies at bay. He took a very active interest in local affairs & was President of the School Parents & Citizens for 14 years & was widely known for the Euchre Parties he ran in the local hall for various charities. He was also secretary of the Cemetery Trust for many years & as many of the old records had been lost, Harry & the grave digger .. often spent many hours locating a vacant plot. ... He was a trainer for the Football Club for many years & also an active gun shot, & when foxes were in plague numbers he organised many shoots to thin them out a bit. He was a foundation member of the Golf Club that was formed in the early 30s & had a 9 hole course around the football ground. .. Perhaps it was William who persuaded his father to include camel gear so extensively in his store. In 1886 the pastoral firm of Elders had imported the first batch of 120 camels to SA; by 1884 a pair of camels suitable to draw a buggy were being advertised for 120 pounds & 10 years later there were as many as 1500 camels in the State ... To manage Afghan camel drivers was no mean task, but William gained their confidence & sent his teams out over the arid country where Maree & Birdsville were later established. Wherever he went he was met with a smile of greeting from ostlers, men meeting the camel train, hotel keepers & housemaids alike. In Farina, Central Australia, he met Annie Maria TURNER who was paying a visit to her sister and brother-in-law, then working the land in the area. In the course of a camel ride William proposed to Annie & on being accepted decided to return to Adelaide to take a job as traveller for Holden & Sons. His meagre salary of 3 pounds per week had to be augmented by additional agencies. Bill & Annie's first home in SA was on Norwood Parade where Nell was born. When she was 1 her father joined his brother-in-law Herbert PRESTON in the gold rush to WA, where they found some gold but did not have enough money to develop the seam. The claim was sold & Bill returned to SA. With the addition of Leslie, Winifred & James the family eventually settled in an old bungalow in St Peters. In later life Nell remembered how her father would tie a cushion to the handlebars of his bicycle & sitting his 4 year old daughter on it, would set off to teach at the Norwood Baptist Sunday School. This done, he would hire a horse & trap to take his beloved family to the beach ...By 1905 Bill realised that his prospects in the leather business were scant as his elder brother had 2 sons .. Fortunately his brother-in-law Herbert PRESTON was about to move from WA to Sydney to set up the Australian branch of the Nestle Swiss Milk Co. Bill accepted the offer of a partnership & settled his family in Cabramatta Rd, Mosman on the N shore of Sydney Harbour & later in Warrawee. .. they often went on camping expeditions .. An excellent turf tennis court put down at the Warrawee home drew many friends & relatives when more prosperous days arrived. .. He put real life into the Rotary Club of Sydney when it was most needed & as its first chairman instilled a wonderful spirit of fellowship for which the whole movement in Australia is now famous. .. on his death the Rotary magasine the Pinion headed an obituary with `Bill Holden goes to his rest, a beloved Rotarian who had a genius for friendship & a heart of gold."Here is a photo (49 kbytes) of them with their family on the verandah at Warinilla from the book (p151?)
2251 11--Ellen "Nell" Turner HOLDEN (1895 Adelaide-1980 Sydney) Page 91 continues: Nell "wanted to use her artistic talents by working with a commercial artist - her father refused to allow it... She it was who took her brothers & sisters on holiday, on visits to shops in the city, to friends & to the pantomime, & housekept for them when her parents went on holiday. .. (During) the war, Nell joined the Red Cross & helped run a convalescent home for returned soldiers. When that closed she became Commandant of No 55 detachment, which started a garden to sell plants & seeds to raise funds for the Red Cross Society. At first dressed in her uniform of plus-fours & gaiters, Nell rode her huge horse Chester to the garden each day but later had a little cart build & drove Mob about delivering the produce. When the war was ending & servicemen returning from overseas the `gardeners' went off to meet the ships (giving) the tools of trade to 2 returned soldiers, setting them up in business, & she herself returned to the family garden to grow pick & pack flowers commercially. .. She was one of Australia's first potters, starting in 1926 .. Clay, glazes, colours, all had to be imported & kilns for firing were unheard of. In 1927 Nell & her sister Win obtained plans for a gas kiln whilst in England & eventually had it built by the Australian Gas Light Co. .. in the garden of the family's Swiss chalet at Warrawee & the sisters went into business together building a tin shed studio .. (Later) Nell looked after her brother Jim's motherless baby Mignon.. When younger sister Win married .. Nell carried on the pottery business alone for 46 years .. famous for her `slop' ware: white base with blue, green & pink slip, slip being clay mixed with water .. During WW2 she was allowed to make only utility ware, so set to work to make endless cups, saucers & teapots, many of which found their way to America as gifts from US servicemen & women. In 1950 Nell was asked by the Society of Arts & Crafts to give lessons in pottery & she also had pupils at her own home. She became President .. & later a life member... Aged 84 she is now taking lessons in oil painting.."Here are photos (146 kbytes) of her and 2253 Sir James HOLDEN from p148 or 151.
2252 11--Captain Leslie Hubert HOLDEN (6.3.1895 Adelaide -18.9.1932 in plane accident) Page 91: "When (Leslie's) tragic death occurred (Bill) too charge of (Leslie's) New Guinea flying enterprise & sold it.." Page 95: "As a youngster .. he (built) a wireless which worked in the days when radio was considered one of the wonders of the age. Motor engines were his hobby & he was an expert driver.. He enlisted in WW1 .. as a motor driver to Egypt, where he would lie on the sand & watch the old Maurice Farmins go lumbering overhead at .. 55mph. When he heard that the 1st Australian Flying Corps was being established he immediately applied but was first sent with the Army to fight in France. The poor food & bad conditions at the front affected his health & he was sent back to England where he trained under Colonel Oswald WATT in the original Australian Flying Corps. Leslie went on to become a captain & to win the Military Cross for machine-gunning frontline troops from the air, frequently from a height of only 15 metres. Time after time he returned to base with his machine riddled like a sieve with German bullets. Once he was nearly shot down in an encounter with the famous German flying ace RICHTHOFEN. A burst from R's machine gun came through the floor between his legs, ripped his leggings & partly wrecked the controls. Behind him the canvas of the fuselage cracked in the air like the sail of a ship. He limped home with the tail of the plane hanging down & when he landed one of the wings fell off on impact. Being the last of his squadron to remain uninjured & in good health, he was sent back to England to train other aviators & was awarded the Airforce Cross.. When the war ended Leslie .. flew all over NSW to inspire investment in the Peace Loan, at the same time opening new flying fields in many places & being proclaimed a hero wherever he went. Demobilised, he joined the family firm, by this time Holden's Motor Body Builders, & managed the Sydney branch in William St for several years. But flying was in his blood & with a friend named Fred EADGAR he put up money to buy a plane which he named the Canberra. After taking passengers for joy rides from Sydney to Newcastle he went on to become the first aviator to fly from Sydney to New Guinea, where he set up an aerial freight carrying business in a land of hazardous flying conditions & no radio facilities. He took part in the dangerous & desperate search for the lost KINGSFORD-SMITH & his 3 companions in N Australia.. harrassed & hindered in his search he eventually found the lost airmen & then went on to hunt for the lost ANDERSON & his mate who had also set out to look for KINGSFORD-SMITH.. When Les came to Sydney from New Guinea for his sister Win's wedding, he was invited to join a fishing holiday group with his friend Fred EADGAR. Upon request he delayed his flight 1 day to present prizes at the Airforce Ball only to find he was to fly next day in a Puss Moth, a type .. he always despised. He bade his wife Kathleen goodbye & flew off into a storm over Lismore which dislodged a wing; all aboard were killed... His young wife & 3 daughters were left badly off until Leslie's father was able to sell Holden's Airways to a co. calling itself Guinea Airlines .."Here is his photo ??.jpg from p149. FIND!
