I am not a Barbarian,
I'm a Barbadian.
There's a big difference!
I watch a lot of movies.
If I'd saved that money instead, I'd be able to buy more stuff, but have less perspective with which to express myself through alternate, intentionally created personalities; less cultural exposure; and be, overall, a much less enriched human being.
Hence, you see, I traded economic tokens (money, anti-physical) for vicarious experience (emotional - mental and physo-physical), which lead to personal development (soul enrichment).
I would also be under the mistaked impression that movies cannot be a waste of time.
Hopefully, I can warn you about the inane, unspectacular, pathetic attempt-at-movie-s, and proclaim the greatness of those innovative, unique, fun, splendid movies which either are now, or will become from a historical perspective, classics.
Don't rent; BUY a copy of "Waking Life". Watch it at least once a week. As it gets easier for you to be novel, you may reduce the frequency of watching, but not below once every three months.
Also, watch "Sins of the Fathers" at least once. This has now become one of my favourite movies of all time, vying with "Shawshank Redemption" for the pole position. Special metion should also be made of "Slam", which was somewhat like the book "A Kestral for a Knave".

Intellectually stimulating, more of an analysis of the logistics, structure, and political-economic relationships with the "host countries" and organised free enterprises | The Mafia: The Inside Story [double feature:]{ Mafia Nations, Nuclear Mafia } | Documentary, c. 96 mins, somewhat interesting.
Much more broad-based than "the mafia", more about organised crime in general, and also public and private sector enterprises which support possible terrorists but are, themselves, perfectly legal. |

Must See. Recent story (concluding 2002), well presented, almost too good to be based on a true story. | "Sins of the Fathers" [ DVD via Amazon ] | Drama, based on a true story, but much more engrossing than anything I have watched in either the drama or documentary gengres.
Classic. Good Story, Good Directing. | "Gladiator" | Drama. Set in Roman times. Features War.
Must See, Possible Classic (reserve judgement until 2 sequels come out) | "Bourne Identity" | Similar to "The Long Kiss Goodnight", but more recent...
Classic | "The Long Kiss Goodnight" | A modern classic. Action: covert ops.
Kool. This has become a cult classic. Its good, but I still prefer "Slam". | The "Barber Shop" Movie | Urban Comedy-Drama, has soul and is funny.
Brakz! | "The Rules of Attraction" | Pop Drama, special directing. Worth seeing for the directing alone, but also has fascinating characters.
Animation! Mayhem! Drama! Watch it now! | "The Dangerous Lives of the Altar Boys" | Featuring animation by Todd McFar... , a great story and kool characters, nice look inside practical effects of dogmatic religions.
Long-winded, but good at stages. Rent it, if you have time to kill, it is not bad but not that exceptional to me. The story, however, is SUPERB. Would make a great read as a book. | "The Four Feathers" | Drama, revolves around War and so on. Interesting look at alternative interpetations of God-liness and courage.
MUST SEE! Evokes thought about the effect of cosmopolitian society of American on Black people. | Slam | A thought-provoking urban drama. Deals with the legacy of anti-black-skinned racism in contemporary societies within the U.S.A.
MUST SEE! A metaphorical survival guide for prospering within any situation, no matter how bleek. | The Shawshank Redemption | Drama. Fictional (?) life story. Well told. | I could write a book about how deep, fufilling, and inspirational this movie is. If you watch one movie, make this it! |
The Definitive Action Movie. Of course, you saw it already, many times. | The Matrix | Action. Deep Metaphor for the current Human Condition, under Tradition and Capitalism, and the 4D/3D conflict and the Sleeping and Awakening paths. | Taking "cult classic" to another level, quassi-religious-sects have been formed based on this movie! |
Recommended, but not for everyone. | Stigmata | Drama. About the Gospel of Thomas. Quassi-fiction about its surpression by the Roman-Catholic+Church. | Also see the R paper's look at the Gospel of Thomas. I could write a booklet on how the GoT allows me to reconcile Jesus' teachings with my neo-pagan-esque way. |
Recommended, great movies esp. if you like vampire flicks. | Dusk Til Dawn [#1 , #3] | Action. Vampires. Two movies (ignore #2, it is a myth and is not part of the series)
Of course, you've watched this. I recommend it for everyone, wheter you like vampires or not. | Interview with a Vampire | Vampires, Drama. | Also see the Anne Rice novels. |
The style of this is more "flash" than the suble drama of the above, but I loved this, too. | Queen of the Dammed | Vampires, Action-Drama. | Totally different style from the virtual prequel (i.e. Interview with a vampire). More like Blade: action, special effects. |
Of course, you've watched this too. A pop classic, action-packed pair of vampire flicks. | Blade [ #1 , #2 ] | Action. Vampires involved, Blade as a "daywalker". Cult classics. | Also see the videogames. Not that I have. |
Entertaining. Leaves you with a unique emotional state at the end. Must be experienced, but leave it for "killing time". | American Physopath | Drama. Inside the mind of a physco, sort of. Unique.
BUY THIS and watch it once a week, at least. | Waking Life | Philosphy, invented by Phytag. to explain his search for Sagedom, concentrated and embeeded in carictures of everyday people, all rotoscoped and syncronized with nice audio. BUY THIS! | Don't bother reading any philisophical books (except for mine). Instead, watch Waking Life, and Grok all of them in one sitting! |
You probally watched them all already, if you like that sort of thing. | Silence of the Lambs [ #2 , #0 ] | Physco-Drama (drama about a physopath) | Modern classical series, but only recommended for those who like physcopath movies. |
Unique. Long, but worthwhile. | Being John Malcovich | Drama. Unique. Entertaining. Inspires many strings of thought. | Watch it. Entertaining, but has deep philisophical implications. |
Worth watching for "Silent Bob" alone, but otherwise, entertaining. | Dogma | Drama. Unique. "What if God were One of Us." | Logical fallacy implies that unity (the singularity of god) can be subtracted from the alien to make it physical. Instead, we divide by k. |
Modern classic, worth watching for his car alone. The story is important and potentially life-changing, as well. | Schindler's List | True story about one business-man who made a difference during the Holocaust by preserving lives. | PBS Commentary |
