WHITE CLIFFS

A Myth

The Cliffs of Dover
The Cliffs of Dover stretch the southern coast of England. They are made of white limestone. They are one of the most beautiful natural sights in this world. White walls that stretch 100+ feet straight up from the beach, giving a person a feeling of great insignificance. Many myths have been made as to their origin, by many peoples seeing them for many different reasons. All were awed by them. From the Celts to the Romans to the Vikings, no culture felt them insignificant.

"Grandfather, where did the cliffs come from?"

"It is very simple, child. The Cliffs of Dover were made a long time ago, by a great sea monster," the old man said. "It is not quite as simple as that. I will go into detail if you wish."

The child smiled and said, "Please do!"

The old man sat back in his chair and began to speak. "The monster, whose name was Dover, was in love, but the problem was that he was in love with a human, not another monster. Her name was Lori. His love for her began on a day in the fall as he lay on the beach sunning himself in summer's last rays of sun. Lori, who was the daughter of a baron, was riding her horse on a ridge near the beach. She did not see the monster, but he saw her. As he looked, his eyes lit up and his heart was captured forever.

"Over time Dover grew tired of merely gazing on his lady in the morning as she rode her horse past, so he thought of a plan to meet her. One day, using his great magic, he turned himself into a man. As she rode by, he faked an injury and she stooped to assist him. As she climbed down from her horse, he turned himself back into a sea monster. Her initial reaction was fear, as he expected. Also, as Dover had planned, her horse ran away. She was now facing a monster fifty times her size. As she looked at him, he smiled, and she detected no aggression from him. She realized that he was beautiful. His scales, which appeared black, were actually a rainbow of colors in the autumn sun. She was truly stunned when he spoke to her, and she returned his comments without hesitation. As the morning grew short and the sun rose high, they talked. Lori had to leave him, as her father would worry about her and come looking. She promised to return the next day, and she left.

"Dover was very happy. He loved her, and perhaps she loved him too. When she returned the next day, he had a gift for her: a scale made into a necklace for her to remember him by. She liked it, but she had bad news for her new friend. She was to be married in a month. Her fiancee was a lord named Thomas. Thomas lived in Scotland, far from the coastal realms where Dover could see her. On this news, he cried. She felt terrible and begged her father to not force her to marry this lord, but to no avail. She told Thomas of her love for Dover, but instead of helping the situation, it hurt. Thomas heard of the monster and went down to the shore to slay it. When he got there, Dover didn't want to fight, but Thomas attacked and injured him badly.

"Dover lay on the beach dying, and Thomas bent down by his head and said, "You could never have had her, and now she is mine." Dover was angered by this, and though he was dying, he began to cast one final spell. The spell was not to kill the lord, but as a final token of his affection for Lori. As Thomas heard the words of magic Dover spoke, he ran away. As the spell was unleashed, there was a brilliant flash, and when the dust settled, the cliffs were there.

"Lori married Thomas, but she never forgave him. She hated him until he died four years later in a battle with the French. After that she was happy. Her father let her name the new cliffs, and she gave them the name they hold to this day in tribute to the monster who loved her so much."
